Parka
Late 2004 and Parka lead singer/songwriter Matt Thomson, becoming tired of his music studies at Perth College of Music, decides to head back to sunny Glasgow and put his collection of home recordings to good use. Music shops, internet and colleges were scoured for players and finally February 2005 saw the birth of Parka as a 4 piece indie/electro rock outfit with the smiley energy of a drummer called Neil, the calm presence of a bassist – Ian, and the eerie strangeness of a keyboard technocrat named Mark. Matt’s charming, childlike stage energy helped to win the band the attention they deserved, even back in the early days of their low-fi casio-infused moments.

A year down the line they were offered a single deal for their manic anthem ‘Disco Dancer’ through influential tastemaker 7” label Worst Case Scenario. Summer 2006 brought Parka to London in preparation for their debut single where they found themselves living in an old strip club in Whitechapel, resplendent with pole in the living room and chair screwed to the floor outside the shower cubicle! First time guests to the Parka residence must perform at least one initiation pole dance for the band.

'Disco Dancer’ took many by surprise, winning Zane Lowe’s Fresh Meat on Radio 1, getting playlisted on XFM. The video (complete with balloon drum kit, guitar and sax) made it onto The Box and Q.

The bigger labels came calling and Jeepster won the race for their signature whilst the band continued to claim London’s indie clubs as their own, toured with Boy Kill Boy, opened for The Automatic and sold out Glasgow’s King Tuts.

Now permanent residents in London while they record their album, Parka’s first single on Jeepster, set for release in 2007, will introduce a wider audience to the excitement of the bands guitar and sax driven dance excursions

Sons and Daughters
In the summer of 2006, Sons And Daughters holed up in a house in the village of Adfern on the west coast of Scotland. They had no television, no telephones, and worked on new songs in a converted barn for eight hours every day. "We wrote and practiced all day and played poker and got drunk at night. We were committed to writing a great pop record," says Adele Bethel. "We all love Blondie and The Smiths and we wanted to embrace that and not repeat what we had done before. Then we thought: who would be the perfect producer for a record like this?"

Domino’s Laurence Bell suggested Bernard Butler, and all being huge Suede fans the band agreed. This Gift bears out that Butler and Sons And Daughters make a winning combination, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time of recording. "He’s very, very tough," says Scott Paterson. "He doesn’t sugar-coat anything and we had a lot of clashes. Then we heard the playbacks of the songs and it all began to make sense." Adds Adele: "At first it was his way or no way. Then Scott got talking to him about Joe Meek and Bert Jansch and we started to click."

The result, despite or perhaps because of the tensions and struggles that came during its recording, is an album on which a unique, inspired band step up onto a whole new level.

The Complete Stone Roses

Scottish favourite's "The Complete Stone Roses" have offered to help music fans in Aberdeen, affected by the recent closure of the Lemon Tree venue which went bankrupt last December without warning, by offering to honour tickets already purchased at their new show. a spokesman for the band said ""after the lemon tree went bankrupt, the band felt terrible about their fans being left out of pocket , so they've arranged a new date at Aberdeen's "Moshulu" on Friday 11th April 2008 and have offered to exchange the tickets for the cancelled show for tickets for the new show via promotions company PCL who have helped the band to arrange this one off gig"

The tribute act widely regarded as one of the most successful, are well known for their kind gestures. Last December they performed two sell out shows at the Glasgow Carling Academy and managed to raise an incredible £17,000 for Cancer Research UK from the 2nd night and later this year they will be releasing a single (remake of Joy Divisions "Love Will Tear Us Apart") specifically to benefit the charity.
In relation to the ticket fiasco faced by fans who have have been told to "put claims into the recievers" the band members are quoted to have said "we dont see why any music fan should have to suffer because of mismanagement of a venues money, the lemon tree should have paid back everyone who purchased tickets in good faith for any show but instead they have left it down to bands like us who have not only lost income through the cancelation itself but are also having to clean up the lemon tree's mess, we didn't even know the gig was cancelled until about 2 weeks to go"

Exchanges are available from One Up Records, Aberdeen from Wed 6th Feb 2008 and are available until 30th March 2008.

The Futureheads

The Futureheads

With a million young bands all citing the same post-punk records as their main inspiration, the Futureheads have found a niche for themselves by working from the same building blocks and creating something that rings truer than the rest.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the band sound a lot like XTC did in their earliest days. Once you get past that, you can hear that they've got their own songs and ideas worming their way through this jagged, explosive, tight and highly tuneful concoction. The fact that all four members take on vocal duties and engage in some twisted harmonies and vocal trade-offs that are nearly dizzying also helps bring the band into their own.

This Sunderland four-piece are both an intriguing and powerful mass of contradictions. They are a band who - like all the best bands – look and feel like a gang, but who, in this instance, can rarely agree on anything at all. A band who have deliberately set themselves only short-term, low-key goals, but are, realistically, on the verge of going all the way. A band who recognise and salute the DIY ethic, while simultaneously detesting its implicit under-achievement. A band who can accurately cite Devo, Queen, Fugazi and Kate Bush as influences, but who have carved out their own instantly identifiable sonic niche.

The band released its debut single in late 2002, and followed it up with two more singles in 2003, 123 Nul and First Day, both of which were issued by the Fantastic Plastic label. 679 stepped up to release the band's self-titled full-length in mid-2004 and the band haven't looked back since with their single "The Hounds Of Love" reaching the top 10 in the UK charts.

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - 14.00

The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!John Peel.

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles, not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. That was back in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases. In this fashion, the debut single GO OUT AND GET ‘EM BOY! was collected from the pressing plant, delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. From GEORGE BEST, “an unmitigated delight” [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.

Glasvegas

On sale: Friday 12 September @ 9am

As we limp from our washout of a summer into the long, dark days of autumn, fear not, we bring good news. MTV TWO’s Gonzo On Tour is gearing up for its annual romp around the UK.

An event that has become as synonymous with October as Halloween itself,
Gonzo On Tour reigns supreme in any avid music fan’s calendar. This year promises big talent in little venues. We will be cramming headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, The Automatic, Mystery Jets, Foals and Glasvegas into teeny-weeny venues. Why? So you can get up close and personal with your favourite performers. A far cry from the blips-on-screen you may have squinted at the festivals, you will literally be able to shower in the sweat of your idols!

A cracking support line-up: Iglu And Hartly, Noah And The Whale, Late Of The Pier, Esser, Friendly Fires and Magistrates, are all confirmed for the UK-wide tour.

Hosted by Zane Lowe and supported by Topman, the Gonzo Tour bus will land in Liverpool on Friday 10th October to kick off the revelry.

Gonzo on Tour has always been about the best of new talent...nurturing little known bands that have gone on to be huge. Previous Gonzo on Tour alumni include Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro... the tour has also provided Maximo Park, Razorlight, and 2008 headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, with their debut TV performances.

Reeling from last year’s 5th Birthday celebrations, culminating in the still talked about Queens Of The Stone Age bash, the Gonzo team have delivered once again in securing this year’s stellar line-up. In addition to plucking hot new thangs including, Iglu And Hartley and Noah And The Whale, Gonzo veterans, Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party pay homage to their favourite brown couch to headline the London and Glasgow dates respectively.

MTV TWO cameras will be filming at each gig and will capture backstage interviews and mayhem to air from Friday 14th November at 7pm.

But the fun doesn't stop when the bands come off-stage.  No sirree - we're bringing you an official Gonzo after party!  Zane Lowe will be taking to the decks for one of his justifiably legendary DJ sets and the Gonzo team are cooking up a host of other shenanigans and surprses to keep you up WAY past your bed time.

Stephen Fretwell

What, then, to do if you're Stephen Fretwell and you've spent over a year of your life promoting Magpie, a slow-burning, gem of a debut album which moved and entranced in equal measures?  Simple. If you're Stephen Fretwell, you take off to New York, Magpie's success  had surprised everyone, not least its creator. You'd like Stephen Fretwell and not just because he has a stock of libellous anecdotes about former boy-band members, an easy-going charm and he'll laugh at your jokes if you kick his shins. Stephen Fretwell, was born in Scunthorpe in 1981, a fact that belies the maturity and worldliness of his song-writing. but he liked New York so much he decided to make his second album there.  An acquaintance in London thought Fretwell might be lonely in New York and suggested he give Eli Janney a call. As luck would have it, Janney, late of Girls Against Boys and producer of Garbage and Ryan Adams, was at home. The pair went for a drink.  "I liked him instantly," smiles Fretwell.  Pleasant night aside, easing himself back into the writing harness wasn't especially easy.  Shaken and creatively stirred, out came some new songs, over a dozen of them in fact. He played them to his new friend. Janney said one was good, the rest were "shit" and a creative partnership was born.  "I immediately thought 'I'd like to work with you'," smiles Fretwell.  The result, Man On The Roof, will surprise people. It's not as melancholy as Magpie, but it is just as beguiling.  There's a rich vein of songwriterly talent here. Cheered up or not, the core of Man On The Roof stares deep into the heart of relationship darkness. And what now for the man who is already planning album number three?  "I'm not interested in making a body of work," he insists, "but I would like to make a lot of records and I would like them to be a progression. What I'd really like is for people to buy this one who didn't know Magpie and then discover it for themselves."

The Twelves

Doors - 10:30 PM

Tickets - 5.00

From Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, "The Twelves" were formed by the duo João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira back in 2006. The name came from the strange coincidence of their birth dates: twelve of july of 1980.

The breakthrough for The Twelves came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track "Boyz" from M.I.A's sophomore album, Kala. The reworked track with an added club feel resulted in one of the most talked about remixes of 2007. The blog coverage surrounding the remix was extensive and eventually the track started to appear in sets from high profile djs around the world, including Kissy Sell Out, who played it on BBC's "In New Djs We Trust" series.

The duo followed "Boyz" with equally well received remixes for Asobi Seksu and Erlend Oye, both of which featured on a number of blogs and music related sites. This stream of good tracks soon caught the attention of a number of labels, including Modular Records (home of Cut Copy, Klaxons and others) who commissioned a "Twelves Remix" of the song "Get Lucky" by New Young Pony Club. The resulting remix was released alongside reworkings from household names like MSTRKRFT and Who Made Who, and received excellent reviews.

Press coverage in Brazil soon started to pick up, with interviews in newspapers and magazines. The coverage led to appearances in festivals and concerts alongside names like Justice, Diplo, LCD Soundsystem, She Wants Revenge, Van She, Phoenix, Groove Armada, etc.

Their live show is a unique blend of live keyboards, drum machines, mash-ups and remixing on the fly. A key element for the duo is trying to improvise as much as possible.

DANANANANAYKROYD

Dananananaykroyd's live shows, for the uninitiated, are somewhat legendary. They're young, and as young people in bands are prone to doing, they stand up on stage and play their songs with a bit of enthusiasm.. They thrive on the independence that identifies the truest hub of the Glasgow music scene – the bit that, in their own words, allows bands "to do exactly what they want to do, exactly how they want to do it, and always sound amazing at it, regardless of what London tells everyone is cool."

Dananananaykroyd released their first EP, Sissy Hits, on London-based Holy Roar Records in June 2008. Shortly after, they introduced ex-Russia drummer Paul Carlin as their new (other) drummer after James Hamilton of Errors left the band. Dananananaykroyd signed to Best Before Records shortly thereafter, and recorded their debut full-length album Hey Everyone! in the US with producer Machine. The band have toured the UK extensively with bands such as Foals and Johnny Foreigner and recently completed a European tour with the Kaiser Chiefs.

Howling Bells
“The sound of PJ Harvey hitching a ride with the Velvet Underground through Twin Peaks.” NME

Howling Bells possess a sound reminiscent of another town, another time. They'll take you to a place far eerier than Twin Peaks. They'll spirit you to the abandoned Old West, to a town shrouded in snowfall, illuminated by campfire. In this town the beguiling melodies of this five-piece will reel and roll about your head like desire and anticipation - the twin themes of their forthcoming debut album.

Just as vocalist Juanita Stein's silky and sultry voice effortlessly traverses bouts of sudden calm, creeping rage and perfect pop, so too does their music. Lurching from blues-fuelled rock to country-folk lamentations, the buzzsaw melancholy of "Velvet Girl" and the barbed longing of "I'll Wait" are pitted against the unadulterated garage blues of "Low Happening" and the saloon-swagger of "Broken Bones." Then there's "The Bell Hit" - a song in possession of a carousing chorus within a simple yet poetic refrain. Of all these songs, one thing rings true - the Howling Bells will haunt and return to you.

The Twilight Sad

The Twilighjt Sad formed in 2003, the band’s early shows saw them creating half-hour pieces of music with tape loops and toy instruments alongside bass, guitar and drums. These sonic adventures gradually evolved into the more traditional songwriting, a more overt inclination towards emotive, eloquent song that we see from The Twilight Sad now.

Deceptively simple songs are rendered transcendent. Bleached, overdriven guitars consistently ride a line between ambient and coruscating, working in tandem with an articulate, tumultuous rhythm section, portraying an awestruck, ragged sentimentality. Lyrically suggestive, ‘Fourteen Autumns…’ verges on the anthemic or celebrative, but is firmly rooted in the familiar, unsaid hurt behind day to day events. While the band’s recorded sound is intricately layered, live, they are an intense experience.

After spending much of 2007 touring - including dates with Smashing Pumpkins, Idlewild, Micah P Hinson and Snow Patrol – 2008 saw the release of mini-album, ‘Here, It Never Snowed. Afterwards It Did’, reworkings of songs from ‘Fourteen Autumns…’. This record shows not only a band full of ideas, embracing the opportunity to recontextualise and create fresh material, but also stands to re-focus the listener’s attention on the strength of the songs themselves.

The Wave Pictures are Dave Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny ''Huddersfield'' Helm. In 1998 Franic and Dave lived in a village called Wymeswold where they started playing music together, with Hugh J. Noble on drums. The band was called Blind Summit. When Hugh decided he didn't want to play drums he went to Exeter to study Philosophy instead. The band changed it's name to The Wave Pictures. Hugh was replaced by several drummers, until Jonny "Huddersfield" Helm became the permanent replacement. For a few years Dave, Franic and Jonny lived apart, meeting up sporadically to play music. They kept on writing songs and recording, and they played shows across the UK and in France and New York. During this time highlights included playing at the Mofo Festival in Paris at the invitation of friends Herman Dune, and playing shows with The Jeffrey Lewis Band. Dave also sang The Wave Pictures song "Dust Off Your Heart" with Herman Dune on a radio session for the late great John Peel. The Wave Pictures also served as backing band and co-songwriters for John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, the results featuring on a seven-inch single released by 4AD records. Last summer, the band finally moved together and currently share a flat in Bethnal Green, London. They are more active than ever. They have toured Spain and Sweden with the mighty Darren Hayman, formerly of Hefner, and played several times in Berlin and France. FOR MORE SONGS,

Alabama 3
We're the Alabama 3. We make Sweet Pretty Muthafuckin Country Acid House Music. All night long. We're not from Alabama, and there's not three of us. We're from Brixton, London. We're the fellas that did that Soprano's theme tune. That tune bought someone a swimming pool, but it sure wasn't any of us...

Alabama 3 is a pop band, a punk rock, blues and country techno situationist crypto-Marxist-Leninist electro band. We never went on X Factor or Pop Idol or Stooge Quest. We did it the old fashioned way; Back in 1996, we threw a big old party, invited all our friends. We took a fistfull of blotters and half a dozen disco biscuits and then made it up as we went along. Geffen records bought it..! for a million dollars! We never needed a self-appointed quango of jaded vampires to tell us how to sing the blues...we got Mojo*. We have the power to raise the dead.

The Blackout

One of the most hotly-tipped new hard rock/punk acts to come out of Wales in recent years, The Blackout are a heavy and intense sixpiece who combine furious drumming, soaring melodies and great crunching riffs.

Their closest musical peers are Funeral For A Friend, as The Blackout take the sounds of the rockstars' debut album, make them slightly heavier and add even more screams. The genre of 'screamo' has rarely seemed so appropriate.

A swift rise for this band has seen them play shows with the likes of Funeral for a friend, Avenged Sevenfold, Dredg, Thrice and Hidden In Plain View, not to mention a place on the UK's biggest indoor rock festival - Give It A Name, joining Lostprophets, Angels And Airwaves, Taking Back Sunday, Goldfinger and Hundred Reasons.

Signed in summer 2006 to Fierce Panda, and nominated for Best British Newcomers at the Kerrang! Awards, the band have had a great reaction to their first Fierce Panda single Hard Slammin', which precedes the mini-album The Blackout! The Blackout! The Blackout!

The Warlocks

Doors - 7:30 PM

The Warlocks
Underground's collective subconscious. Rhythm guitar and organ combine like nothing but mid-period Velvets; gentler lead flourishes are pure extensions of the Angelino Byrds/Love/Rain Parade tradition; the pulse's slow-moving inevitability and the shimmering, staggering wall of heavy drug imagery are classic Spaceman 3. These building blocks have been utilised by entire generations of sullen youths. But the way the Warlocks assemble them makes it all sound new, loud and ripe. The band's considerable size (they're an octet) gives them a natural sonic width that skinnier combos lack. And their twin drums can conjure up either the 68 Dead or the 78 Cramps (two truly Platonic ideals). But for all this name-checking, the Warlocks' raunch is unique, thuggy and essential.   Therapy music can be the best or worst on the planet. Cobble together a backing band from members of your rehab support group and mither miserably through your woes and you’ll produce self-important dross worthy of David Gray on methadone. But if you exercise as well as exorcise your demons, if you plunge headfirst into your sea of troubles and drink, dance, roar, wriggle and scream your way to the other side, then you’ll come out with an album of legend: a ‘Funeral’, a ‘Nevermind’, a ‘Holy Bible’. Thankfully for Lewis Gale, ex of Glasgow maths rock combo Fickle Public, he took the latter option. Shaken up by the death of his younger brother and finding a well of emotional songwriting bursting out of him at the start of 2006, he made the thoroughly sensible decision to hook up with his technically-minded mate Gordon, drink beer, listen to Huey Lewis and Kiss, watch Flaming Lips DVDs and work through the sack of shit on his back in the manner of the thriving Canadian emo-art scene of Broken Social Scene and The Arcade Fire.

Logan
LOGAN are a melodic hard rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. The band have existed for 3 years and are one of the most popular unsigned acts on the UK music scene today.

Debut album 'First Leaf Fallen' has sold thousands of copies worldwide and continues to be an extremely popular seller on the band's offical website (www.logan-net.com). Gigs with Rock giants such as Diamond head and (ex-Creed member's newest offering) 'Alterbridge', have allowed LOGAN to take their music to a wider audience and have made an army of loyal fans in the process.

Airplay of the single "Lost & Found" on Rock Radio and support from fans via a Glasgow newspaper, won the band a support slot with Bon Jovi at Scotland’s National Stadium, Hampden Park, in front of 40000 fans, many of who saw the band for the first time. The subsequent eight-date UK summer headline tour pushed sales of Cruel Little World to sell out status. Total sales of all three releases are now nudging 30,000 with no label support.

In the midst of this surge of activity, Logan were approached byUS film producers to submit a song for the movie “The Jump Off” going into production in early 2009.  The producers not only lovedthe song but were knocked out by the band’s approach. The band headed to LA in October to meet with the producers and spend some time cutting videos for “Lost & Found” and “When I Get Down” – and will be heading back in early 2009 to shoot The Great Unknown during film production.  A new pressing of Cruel Little World with three bonus tracks, including “Lost & Found” was released on November 1st to compliment a 25 date UK and European tour in support of AlterBridge running from November 4th until December 10th.

Late Of The Pier

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - 9.00

Late Of The Pier

Late Of The Pier was created somewhere in the mists of 2003, born from the warped minds of Sam Eastgate and Ross Dawson somewhere in the mists of G.C.S.E's. No-one can remember exactly how it happened but lets just presume it went something like… 'Lets start a band' 'OK' …ignoring the fact that neither Ross or future guitarist Faley had only ever touched their instruments once at this point. (Ross had a knock-about on Sam's drums one evening, Faley skipped school to get stoned in Sam's attic and make a song 'Wasted Intellectuals'... probably LOTP's first song).

LOTP found a home in Way Out West and it's all-ages gigs, their feelings reciprocated by the new generation. Stuck mid-way between an older generation of somewhat static crowds and a younger generation of hyper-active kids, LOTP gained a dedicated following in the younger generations through myspace.com and for the energy of their live shows and in the older generations for the music itself. The Klaxons/NME had just coined the phrase 'Nu-Rave' and Late Of The Pier's ideas of live music began to become popular with the mainstream. With this came more interest from the music industry… NME and Radio1 quickly picked up on the band, noting them as one of the bands to watch out for in 2007 and music industry king-pins and affiliates soon became regular attendees to London gigs, often for pleasure instead of business.

Oceansize exist for devotees of minimalism, maximalism, the uncompromising and the intriguingly unique. They were conceived quietly in the minds of five young men strategically placed around the UK and are currently based in Manchester.

Although unwilling to disclose their influences, Oceansize have a deep respect for the following: Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Can, Cardiacs, Jane's Addiction, (early) Verve, Swervedriver, The Beach Boys and Tortoise. But the only way to really appreciate the Oceansize sound is to see their incendiary live show. Signed to Beggars Banquet and with a handful of major tour supports and a SXSW slot, Oceansize have been backed by the forces that be at London’s ultimate Indie Rock Station, XFM as well as NME and Kerrang. Oceansize’ developing sound, using samplers and keyboards, creates an incessant, hypnotising bass rumble that synchs easily with their devastating 3 guitar attack and groove. ‘Cataclysmic’ as NME say….

Metro Riots
Metro Riots are four young men who've emerged from a life of crime and grime to unleash their unforgettable blend of rock and delta blues on an unsuspecting but jubilant audience.  After establishing themselves as London‘s finest live act, Metro Riots were enticed out of the city for nationwide tours with Dirty Pretty Things and The Charlatans throughout May and June last year. They caused uproar and inspired devotion at every stop.

This is a band who live it like they play it - hard, dirty and victorious. The single established the band with UK press ("... a rip roaring blues rallying call...Single of the Week" - The Sun) and radio ("One of the best live bands around, I love them and so should you!" – John Kennedy, Xfm) and the boys embarked on their first tour of Europe, supporting Juliette & The Licks in October/November.

“We sing our version of the blues” states singer Damo. “We’re influenced by the likes of Leadbelly, Blind Willie McTell and then The Stooges, New York Dolls, even Nirvana and Oasis. Fucked up and feeling it... those lot knew it and so do we.” Non-stop touring throughout last year has consolidated the fanbase and attracted the attention of the bigger labels. 2007 is set to be a busy year for Metro Riots with appearances at South by Southwest in March and a second stint in Europe with Juliette & The Licks along with relentless touring in the UK throughout the summer. "Metro Riots – brash blues punk that will leave you dazed and in love" - NME

Shai Hulud - CANCELLED - refunds from point of purchase.
Shai Hulud is well-known within the hardcore scene for their often complex compositions and misanthropic lyrics. Originally hailing from Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band's musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing. After the release of 2003's That Within Blood Ill-Tempered and a number of tours going into the subsequent year, Shai Hulud and vocalist Geert Van Der Velde mutually decided it was for the best he leave the band. Acknowledging some people may misinterpret the parting as the end of Shai Hulud, the band came out on their homepage indicating that they would not be breaking up; instead, the band would change name to The Warmth of Red Blood and continue what had been started with Shai Hulud. At the same time, they also started requesting that anyone who considered themselves up for the challenge of taking over vocal duties record a demo of themselves performing the track "Whether to Cry or Destroy" (quite similar to what The Dillinger Escape Plan did when auditioning new vocalists). In March of 2006, the band announced they were abandoning the moniker 'The Warmth Of Red Blood' and keeping the name Shai Hulud.

In August of 2006, the band signed with Metal Blade Records. Shai Hulud also have a side project named Zombie Apocalypse, whose sound can be summed up as a faster, more chaotic and more manic version of its mother band. It features Matt Fox, Matt Fletcher, Ronen Kaufman, and Greg Thomas.

Silverstein
One would be hard-pressed to come up with a more fitting title for Silverstein's new album than Arrivals & Departures. After all, this Canadian band sold over 300,000 of their previous release, Discovering The Waterfront, on the strength of word-of-mouth and a nonstop touring schedule that saw them crisscrossing the globe. The full-throated rock passion that pervades all 11 songs on Arrivals & Departures emphatically depicts a band that has...well, arrived. Silverstein is about to depart the realm of grassroots phenomenon to enter the stratosphere of critical mass success.

It's been a long, but thrilling trip for this quintet, who came together in the Toronto suburb of Burlington, Ontario at the turn of the millennium. After putting out two of their own EPs, the band signed to Victory Records and released When Broken Is Easily Fixed, which raised eyebrows throughout North America as sales climbed well past 200,000. Showing no ill effects of any "sophomore jinx," Silverstein's follow-up Discovering The Waterfront did considerably better; now total Silverstein record sales are beyond a half-million. The band fueled that momentum by performing on a slew of major tours, from A Taste of Chaos and Warped in the States to the Give It A Name and Download festivals in England. They topped it all off with their first headlining tour of America-the sold-out Never Shave Again tour.

Captain
In a musical era dominated by bands who seem to exist solely within highly specific camps - be it art rock, New York-style indie posturing or something similarly unappealing - Captain are a glorious anomaly. A rum bunch of five distinctly individual people, their music sounds quintessentially of itself. Consequently, Captain are very nearly unique, 2006's most handsome black sheep. "I've never felt particularly part of the scene," says the band's singer Rik Flynn, "whichever scene we happen to be talking about. It's not something I've ever set out to sidestep, it's just the way things are. Of course, I'm aware that this is something that can work against you, but right now, it seems to be working for us." He takes the cigarette he has been earnestly puffing away on from his mouth and blows a self-satisfied smoke ring. "And that pleases me enormously." Captain's music is joyful, clattering, full of divergent moodswings, the jubilant crescendoes of male/female vocal sparring and, just occasionally, the trill parp of a trumpet. Above all else, as Rik Flynn will tell you himself, the band's music is, "hopeful, emotional and euphoric. Whether it's melancholy or we're singing stories about people dying of cancer, we still want to cheer everybody up." And that they do with no little flair. Their debut album, ‘This is Hazelville’, produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC) is a triumph, a record possessing the combustible energy of Arcade Fire with the theatrical thrum of Flaming Lips and the sheer exuberance of a six year-old anticipating Christmas. You may well have already heard their debut single Frontline. Well, its bug-eyed oh-oh-OH!s are typical of the band's ability to hypnotise. This is wonderfully involving music.

Architects

Championed by critics, fans and peers alike as one of the finest UK metal/hardcore crossover acts of their generation, Brighton, England quintet ARCHITECTS return with third album “Hollow Crown”, their debut for Century Media Records and the indisputable jewel of the band’s acclaimed and prolific career. Since their formation in late 2004, ARCHITECTS have secured themselves footing on a continually upward stream the old fashioned way: via steadfast commitment to touring and a wholehearted dedication to refining their craft. Their 2006 debut “Nightmares” was a scarily competent showcase of the quintet’s potential; recorded and released while the band averaged an age of just 17, the album already clawed at the heels of their older and more established peers. However, it was 2007’s “Ruin” that turned these ripples into waves. A mélange of complex riffs, challenging structures and accessible groove, “Ruin” saw ARCHITECTS step up from underground leaders into international contenders. ARCHITECTS hit the road across the UK, mainland Europe and Canada alongside the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, As I Lay Dying, Sikth, Gallows and The Holly Springs Disaster, gaining momentum and earning new supporters every step of the way. Amongst these new supporters were Century Media Records, who kicked off their worldwide three-album partnership with ARCHITECTS in July 2008 by releasing “Ruin” to a worldwide audience. Now the time has come for the next chapter in ARCHITECTS’ musical evolution - for their third album “Hollow Crown” which sees this ferociously ambitious quintet become a new beast entire.  “Hollow Crown” will surely see ARCHITECTS turning their waves into tsunamis.

Twinkling in the night sky of the shining Montreal music scene, famously home to Arcade Fire, The Dears and Stars’ friends and sometime collaborators Broken Social Scene, Stars produce delicate, sophisticated, fun, pretty, warm music that recalls “those fifteen seconds in your life when you kissed someone and it broke your heart”. They claim that in writing current album Set Yourself On Fire they were aiming for a straight-up sex record, but ended up writing a sex and death and robots record – in Stars, everything that starts off simple blows up big, ornate and rich. Don’t miss the soft revolution as Stars sparkle at the Barfly.

Pendleton -

"Right now, Pendleton are the best skate-punk band in the UK.”
(Punktastic.com)

“Marrying the force of Rise Against with the playfulness of NOFX but bringing a large streak of originality as well, Pendleton are undeniably a hot prospect. Tearing through a strong set with mach speed and razor precision, songs like Falling Apart to Double Time sound great live... A great show from an exciting new band."
(Rocksound)

“This EP might just be one of the best skatecore/melodic punk rock records in the last few years. Brilliant."
(MetalOrgie.com)

"Rocket-Fueled and supersonic, the quartet has taken that classic Cali sound and added a decidedly British slant... Pendleton play punk rock before it became obsessed with haircuts and fashion; when it was true and honest and played with passion."
(Big Cheese)

Pendleton have just completed a stint at the Vans sponsored Warped tour and their own headline tour afterwards.

Yashin - "I must admit, when I see the word 'screamo' I tend to turn and run the other way, but not in this case, quite the opposite effect really, I found myself quite addicted and listening to the songs over and over. Proving in the most hard core of ways, that the music scene doesn't have to be all about making and playing the safe indie pop stuff, and that they are bands still out there who can create music that brings out the heavy artillery and not just relies on someone screaming down a mic for the sheer effect of it all. They've created a perfect balance of the screamo and metal that lets their raw talent shine through in its best possible ways." - (Infuzed)

Yashin have shared the stage with the Lostprophets, Flood of Red, Kids In Glass Houses, My Mind's Weapon, Ghost of a Thousand, Zico Chain, Dividing The Line, We Are The Ocean and many more...

PMX - After 8 years together, playing countless shows and recording several self-financed cds, Pmx have developed into one of Britains top melodic punk rock bands.

Having played alongside world renowned bands such as Alexisonfire, Anti-Flag, OPM, Taking Back Sunday and Propagandhi to name a few, the band released their debut album 'Rise and Shine' on 3 independent labels - Bells On Records (Japan, Europe) Milk And Cookies (Canada) and Allstar-Recordings (Uk).

The quartet have toured the UK, Canada, and Europe to promote the album and are soon to hit Japan.

After being selected to play the Taste Of Chaos Tour 06, the band went on to win Ernie Balls International Battle Of The Bands Competition, winning £10,000 of equipment from sponsors.

Pmx have received airplay from Radio 1 DJ Mike Davies numerous times and were included on his 'Tipped for 2007' play list.

allstationsdown - allstationsdown are 6 lads from the north-east playing a bleeding assault of screamo-hardcore that can be likened to Underoath and Beloved. They have shared the stage with bands such as A Poetic Yesterday, Civilsed, My Minds Weapon and Clearer The Sky.

Bring Me The Horizon
Bring Me the Horizon, five young British lads with a penchant for heavy. Essentially This is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For is an 18 minute mid nineties breakdown; four tracks of intense raging chugging and squealing, stop/starting and severe ‘core riffing. Nary a second hand euro thrash riff to be found, nary a melodic sung chorus, all things about this genre that irritate me are devoid (well save for girls pants and backwards hair-cuts). I was sold on TIWTEOYSWMF after viewing a minute long promo clip on MySpace featuring the indomitable closing mosh to “They Have No Reflection” (which damn well better be a song about vampires) with live footage. I was sold on the sheer intensity of their attack, the stone cold passion with which they present their sound. A nonstop attack, the vocals never quit, the raspy screech and pit growling, gang screams and occasional spoken epitaphs, the power of these dudes does not stop, the violence does not cease until the last seconds of harried screaming (very reminiscent of a certain Acrid track) and the line “I fucking love you… .”

John Power
John Power's new material may be of some surprise to fans of his previous bodies of work with The Las and Cast, because to all intent and purposes it seemed he had withdrawn from the music scene, appearing occasionally at bespoke intimate gigs, but in the main he had disappeared off the scene for a while. It appears this was all a necessary part of the process to get to be where he had to be at allowing the new material to develop organically and re-establish his voice and technique.

Its closest to the music I listen to- its no longer about the youthful style where the tempo is faster the strokes are more considered crafted and temperate, and the dynamic now lies in the lyrics and form. I dont need to grip so hard and I can let go a bit more now and the guitar feels easier in my hand.

Bad Manners

A Bad Manners show somehow encapsulates the spirit or essence of a good time, a party band without trying to be someone else, something else or without trying to move with the times because the band represents what humans have always done when the opportunity and conditions allow. Drink, dance and be merry. This makes the band original, authentic and timeless, cult; because it is what it is without having to change. To get cult status you don't dance to the latest tune you are the tune- Bad Manners don’t pay the piper , they break his whistle in half and stuff it up his kilt -For those who have not experienced a Bad Manners show the question of what to expect might not have been answered. The question is not 100% answerable; I can only give the consistent qualities that exist in a Bad Manners show. Energy and passion with dance music performed by musicians not machines that creates a party atmosphere. The band plays the favourites, Buster does his stuff and people come back time and time again, it is an experience that has an appeal to an eclectic group, skins, punks, bikers, surfers, good timers, gig fanatics, Ska fans, nostalgic 40 somethings and students.

The Changes

Doors - 7:30 PM

Bands today are often reluctant to say which bands have inspired them lest
music journalists start comparing them to their heroes. Not *The
Changes*though. They're not scared one bit, simply because journalists
wouldn't have
a clue how to pin them down. As their name might suggest, these
twentysomethings from Chicago – singer Darren Spitzer, guitarist Dave
Rothblatt, bassist Rob Kallick and drummer Jonny Basofin – don't stick to
anything so crass as a musical blueprint. In fact, not long ago, they had an
inexhaustible list of influences posted on their Myspace. Here's a taster:

Genesis ('All of Genesis, from the beginning to the very end,' says
Kallick), The Beach Boys, Phoenix, The Sea And Cake, Tortoise, Charlie
Parker, Miles Davis, New Order, Mick Fleetwood, The Police ('It would've
been fun to tour with The Police in 1978. We'd learn from Sting. Even the
Tantric sex,' says chief songwriter Rothblatt), Huey Lewis, The Smiths,
disco… and on it goes.

Friends and band members since 2002, they've had time to grow group
affections for these same bands, films (those of Werner Herzog) and baseball
players (Seattle Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki being one in particular). Now, five
years down the line and *The Changes* are, says Kallick, a 'crazy,
dysfunctional family' who get rid of their frustrations in the same way best
mates always do: yelling, hitting, slapping and laughing. In other words
they're a proper gang who, having waited patiently for their stab at being
more than just another Chicago *'it'* band, could be *'the'* band of the
moment with their debut album '*Today Is Tonight'.

The Displacements
Introducing The Displacements, a young band from Leicester with big ideas. They formed a few years ago, Andy, Nick, Schwill and Bone – mates and brothers picking up instruments and learning to play them together in the front room of their house.

The displacements honed their talents playing free gigs in local pubs and getting all of their mates rammed in. They then started touring and playing gigs all over the country travelling in the backs of vans and big red trucks. The lads spent many nights writing songs in their hometown, inspired by the bands they loved, the girls they liked, the things they’ve seen and the nights out they’ve had.

Their style has been likened to The Who, a Hamburg era Beatles, The Kinks and even Scouse Horror! Or as one reviewer put it: Think Motown meets the Clash after a pint with circa 1966 Mick n Keef along the way"

They then started running their own club night in Leicester, each one they put on sold out and a real buzz started. After a riotous set at the summer sundae festival, plays on steve lamacq, a manager that goes by the name of Justin, lots of gigs, drinks and songs, they started to receive a lot of industry and A & R attention. Then they wrote this biog…

Throughout rock history, from OK Computer to War to London Calling, third albums have defined careers. With the bombastic, breathtaking CITIES, ANBERLIN’s cohesive and adventurous new album, the group puts itself in some esteemed company, with a modern classic that uplifts as much as it initiates thought and elicits emotion.

Crafted at Sprinkle’s Seattle-based Compound facility, with drums captured at the infamous London Bridge studio (where classic albums by Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Temple of the Dog and Blind Melon were realized), MILLIGAN says he’s grateful for the opportunity to work where so many legendary discs were born. “It’s out in this wooded area, like 40 miles north of Seattle,” he says. “And there’s this incredibly huge live room there. So we all got together in pre-production to play out the songs and the place had the best feel to it. You actually felt like you were a part of this historic place and it was the perfect vibe to get the record started.”
“We walk onstage and hear the crowd roar,” STEPHEN adds. “I got goosebumps. I don’t drink or do drugs, but I can’t imagine any high that would be better than that.” Equally inspiring is the new disc’s potential to exceed its predecessor from a success standpoint.
As for the band’s mission as Christians, STEPHEN says matter-of-factly, “It’s not like we have a huge platform. We’re not Coldplay or U2, but I want to touch people’s lives. I’ve got two routes to go. I can either go the sex, drugs, and rock & roll route--which is so temporal--or I can invest in people’s lives. When I look back on my life, I want it to have meaning.”

Kula Shaker

Kula Shaker are a British psychedelic rock band who came to prominence during the Britpop era. Their biggest success was circa 1996-1997 with their debut album K, which became the fastest selling debut album since Oasis' Definitely Maybe. The album went on to sell over a million copies in the UK and a further 250,000 copies in the US. The album spawned four hit singles. Their debut UK Top 40 single Grateful When You're Dead was a slice of Acid Hendrix-esque rock. Their success continued with their Sanskrit-warbling hit Tattva, which made number 4 in the UK charts. This single was nominated for A Brit Award for best UK Video. The band's success grew in 1997 with their number 2 single "Hey Dude", a guitar-based track which was kept off the top spot by the Spice Girls. The fourth and final single from K was another top 10 hit with a cover of Radhe Krishna Temple's, Govindam (released as Govinda), remade with swirling guitars and Indian traditional music. Kula Shaker became the only band of their era to have consistent Top 5 and Top 10 hit singles in succession — a feat only matched at that time by Oasis. The band at this time had sold 250,000 singles from their first album. Their success peaked with four nominations in the Brit awards (and winning "Best Newcomer"). Some ill-advised remarks on the traditional mystical properties of Swastikas by lead singer Crispian Mills (son of Hayley and grandson of Sir John Mills) put the band in the firing line of some of the press. However, the band resurfaced in March of that year with their biggest hit, a cover of Joe South's "Hush", which peaked at number 2. The song also proved successful in the US, where it was used on the soundtrack to blockbuster movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer". The song was also placed at number 224 by Virgin Radio, in a poll for the 20th century's greatest songs. (sourced from Wikipedia)

Idlewild

Idlewild are a Scottish rock band formed in December 1995, by Roddy Woomble (vocals), Rod Jones (guitar), Phil Scanlon (bass), and Colin Newton (drums).

Initially their sound obeyed the conventions of 1990s British indie-punk guitar music, but unlike many of their contemporaries, it developed over time, from an edgy and angular sound approaching post-hardcore, as heard in their early material (once described by the NME as "the sound of a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs"), to a different, sweeping, melodic rock sound as displayed on their third album The Remote Part. Idlewild's sound cannot be easily placed into a specific genre, though they have clearly been influenced by bands like Blur, Nirvana, Gang Of Four, R.E.M., The Smiths and Fugazi.

Part of Idlewild's early success can be attributed to their singles gaining heavy rotation on Steve Lamacq's Evening Session on BBC Radio 1, as well as his all-round endorsement of them - the diminutive DJ often cites them as one of his favourite bands.

On November 21st 2005, Idlewild announced that after eight years and four albums they were parting ways with their record label Parlophone/EMI. Part of the band statement reads 'The band had fulfilled their record contract and it seemed like a good time to move on.' Since then, they have signed to Sanctuary and released their latest album Make Another World on March 5th 2007.

One thing Francis Mark can’t predict is the reception that Holding a Wolf By The Ears will receive from the band’s dedicated and worldwide fan base. “I know that there’s no bullshit on this record. What I wrote was direct from my heart, as honest as can be. And I’d like to think that that’s what people can relate to.”

Fans will get plenty of chances to experience this “new” band, with multiple tours already lined up for 2007. With the aid of guitarist Rob Lauritsen, who joined the band last summer, and the addition of a new touring drummer, From Autumn To Ashes have nothing holding them back.

“Music is the one thing on this planet that brings me the most enjoyment,” confesses Mark. “I don’t have a plan B, because if I’m not doing this, I don’t intend on doing anything at all.”

The Bluetones

A band that need no introduction; The Bluetones have been releasing records since 1995. One of their first reviews in Q Magazine proclaimed, “They are the new Stone Roses”. 10 years on and so many wish that The Roses could have continued to do what The Bluetones do. Which is make music that people still want to hear. The band who gave us Indie anthems like 'Slight Return', and 'If…' are still cutting the finest Indie-pop songs today. From the early days of ‘Expecting To Fly’ to the later days of ‘Luxembourg’, The Bluetones will always make a comeback, but what’s important to them is that when they do, they never fail to impress.

The new 5th studio album is in the shops now. Do get a copy pronto, it's called quite brilliantly: 'The Bluetones'. A second single entitled "Head On A Spike" has recently been released from the afforementioned long-player.

As I walk into the practice space of A Wilhelm Scream, I hear the hiss of an idle high gain Mesa Boogie amplifier, the squeal of microphone feedback, and the occasional rapping of stick against drum skin. The dank basement is thick with the smell of stale beer and sweat. A hazy layer of smoke and steam, generated by the perspiration soaked quintet in the room, hovers lazily above them, disturbed only when drummer Nick Angelini pumps at his kick drum, anxious to get this practice back on track. And, with that, the band tears into “Soft Sell”, a track off of their latest release, Ruiner. It’s two minutes of swirling guitars, pounding rhythms, and lyrics that are as poetic as they are profane, and, when it’s done, I can sense that, as good as it sounded to me, the performance wasn’t good enough for A Wilhelm Scream, so they break into the song again..... Discharge

Doors - 7:30 PM

Discharge
Discharge were an Influential United Kingdom UK 82 Anarcho-punk band. Discharge formed in 1977 with the original line up of Terry 'Tez' Roberts on Vocals, Tony 'Bones' Roberts on Guitar, Roy 'Rainy' Wainwright on guitar, Nigel Bamford on bass and Akko on drums. Shortly after Nigel Bamford left the group and Rainy moved to bass. This line up sounded much more like the Sex Pistols and only recorded one demo. The line up and the sound changed in 1979. It became: Kelvin 'Cal' Morris on vocals, Bones on guitar, Rainy on bass and Tez on drums, which many consider to be the "classic" Discharge line up. The heavy, distorted, and grinding guitar-driven sound and anti-melodic shouted or screamed vocals of the new line up earned an early crossover appeal to fans of speed metal. Their songs focused on anarchist and pacifist themes emphasizing the grisly effects of nuclear war and the social ills caused by capitalism. The band's approach to lyric-writing also added to the raw power of the band's sound; Discharge songs often stripped down the lyrics to a guttural, repeated message, to forcefully express a song's theme. Perhaps the most extreme example of this approach is the song "Free Speech for the Dumb," which consists solely of the words from the song's title. The band was also notable for its expression of its political and social themes in its album art, which depicted the horrors of war using an iconic black-and-white photography style. In 1980, Discharge signed on with Clay Records, releasing the single "Realities of War," which made the UK indie charts. After the EP releases in 1980, Discharge went through many line up changes. Tezz (drums) departed and was replaced by Dave 'Bambi' Ellesmere (formerly of The Insane) before "Why". In 1982, Discharge released a full album entitled "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing," which made it to the UK national charts. The Never Again EP saw another lineup change.

Imagine a time when warriors strode the earth. A time when battle-painted warrior-poets sang of battles and heady feats of heroism, myth intermingled with fact, and romantic notions of adventure on the high seas sparked the imagination. The time is now, because so-called battle metal maestros TURISAS – named after their homeland's ancient god of war – are bringing back the old school. As in, 1000 AD. “This comes from somewhere deep inside,” is the only way founder and chieftain songwriter Mathias 'Warlord' Nygård can describe both his music and the inspiration behind it. “We play around with history, there's fantasy imagery there, but I hate fantasy metal with all those dragons or whatever. There's no substance there. We actually believe in what we're doing.”

Be afraid. With festival appearances across the board – Wacken, Tuska, Earthshaker, Party.San, Bloodstock, Nummirock, Summer Breeze, not forgetting an uproarious sold-out UK tour with compatriots Lordi – it was no surprise when readers of the UK's Metal Hammer magazine voted TURISAS 'Best New Band' in their 2006 Reader's Poll. It's because there's simply no one else like them. With 2004's debut 'Battle Metal', a thrilling folk-flecked tour de force, they already established themselves as a genre of one. Now they're upping the ante with “The Varangian Way”, the most singularly ambitious album of the year. Recorded at Sound Supreme Studio and mastered at Finnvox, this metal-clad 8-song battlecry is awash in epic themes, eastern-european folk, and an abiding belief in the almighty power of the riff.

I developed my interest for music at a very young age, mostly due to my father's own musical passion. One of my earliest memories is me waking every morning to the sounds of my father's piano medleys. Music surrounds my family tree so I suppose part of this was meant to be. I absolutely love putting my creative thoughts into music as well as lyrics as I have always been fascinated with using words expressively.

The Zico Chain

You must’ve noticed that there’s something happening in british rock – many bands are sick of the way things are – major label US rock is over-hyped, over-cooked, over-here and it’s about to be over….period. The Charge Of The Dark Brigade has begun.

Zico Chain are three lads in their early twenties who are part of this new slew of UK guitar bands who are sick of (scr)emo-attention-seeking and are about to grab their slice of the pie. The trio have distilled the punk riffola of Motorhead, the druggy vision of QOTSA, the musical skills and visual impact of the White Stripes and a 21st century homegrown social consciousness to create a potent brew worthy of a hard-rocking, hard-living, hard-thinking east London outfit.

Touring the UK with Alkaline Trio, Thursday, Wolfmother, Fall Of Troy and Nine Black Alps before recording their album in LA with godfather of rock Joe Barresi (Bad Religion, Tool, QOTSA), Zico Chain have been winning over friends, lovers and bartenders on both sides of the Atlantic, with their message of celebrate yourself, use your voice, get fucked up.

Their debut single ‘Where Would You Rather Be?’ sounds like survival itself, kicking off about hopelessness and mental escapism with a daylight shredding voice over a sick rhythm section rumble. “No future that’s for sure, so stop trying and pray for cures….low living your system crashed, God gave you an autograph.”

“…Artrocker favourites from that wasteland of rock'n'roll that is Norwich. The Pistolas established themselves in 2006 as one of the most energetic and dynamic live bands playing the scene. Too feisty to be artpop but too melodic and crafted to play the punk scene this four-piece are a brazen blast of distorted dance artrock that takes its pointers from Ramones, Gang of Four, Valentines and Pixies without any notion of being retro. 'Listen Listen' was released on Fierce Panda last year and featured on Artrocker's 'Labels' compilation. New tracks like 'Disco Assassin' demonstrate new songwriting depth while losing none of their gritty urgency. Surely 2007 will be a great year for them…” – ARTROCKER
“…A convincingly nervy slice of post-Bloc Party art-punk (or whatever they’re calling it these days) with a riff nicked from a battered Sonic Youth vinyl, and the desire to play like it’s the last thing you’ll ever do. The Pistolas have it in abundance…” - DISORDER

The Metros

“1965 – that was the year Vietnam hotted up,” explains Jak Payne, guitarist with The Metros, the teenaged south London five-piece who count Squeeze, Ian Dury and the Beastie Boys among their biggest influences.

In a few hours’ time, a band member will break Saul’s front teeth when he punches him through the window of the band’s van. Minutes after that, The Metros will electrify the Heavenly Social with an extraordinary – if somewhat chaotic – fusion of punk, funk, rockabilly, pop and witty lyrics about bunking trains, the degradation of the Welfare State, nights out for a tenner and old Cockney lags with sawn-off shooters.

It’s exhilarating, and with the punch-ups, Mod flash, lectures on Vietnam, monumental boozing and ramshackle charm you can’t help wondering whether the next chapter in British pop is starting here.

The demarcation line between “the fantasy” of south London life and their own fringe participation in dodgy goings-on is blurred, to say the least. As the lager flows, so do tales of selling pills for their mates for spare cash, numerous run-ins with the police, and Saul’s admission that he was expelled from his school for hurling a computer at a teacher whom he recalls was a “prick”. “But we’ve all grown up a bit now,” smiles Jak, not entirely convincingly.

Scheduled to go into the studio this month, the songs they’ve amassed so far suggest they’re all set to be the latest in a line of knavish but gifted London-based ne’er-do-wells that stretches all the way back to The Small Faces, via Madness, Squeeze, Flowered Up and The Libertines…

Sam Duckworth, ex-member of Southend lads Silverskin, has a simple musical angle in principal: armed with an acoustic guitar and laptop, he takes acoustic tracks and places some beats over the top. Sounds simple, but when it's performed like this you can't help but be amazed.

Drawing from artists such as Gomez, Cathal Coughlan, Athlete and Grandaddy, Sam proceeds to meld them into something unique. The song 'I-Spy' describes him perfectly in its opening lyrics:

"...I don't care that this song has a melody or that the beats are not complex / I'm just trying to make you sing and not be perplexed. It doesn't mean any less."

And that is the appeal of this! It is music stripped down to its basic core and performed with a raw passion. Surely that's what music should be about, right?

The black records were, as fate would have it, AC/DC. And as time progressed so the boys did too, covering Motorhead, Zeppelin, Sabbath and just about every other gonzo rock band ever born. Over to singer, guitarist and fiddle player Scotch Barley, "There's 4 key elements in any good mountain song - drinking, cheating, killing and going to hell. It was during the cold, short days at the start of 2006 that Sandi Thom had her Eureka! moment. Instead of driving to gigs up and down the country with her band in her clapped-out car, as she had done for years, the singer from Scotland resolved to try a different approach. She bought a webcam, and announced a run of 21 shows to be performed on consecutive nights during February and March in the basement of her flat in Tooting, South London.

The audience capacity in the flat itself was limited to just six people. But the half-hour shows were to be broadcast, free of charge, via her website at http://www.sandithom.com. The first night, 70 people tuned in to watch, the next night it went up to 670. And by the middle of the second week she was performing to a peak audience of 70,000. By then, the suits from every major record label had visited the flat to see the show for themselves. What they heard was a singer with a sensational voice - strong and expressive enough to fill the largest theatres, but also warm and soulful enough to win over hearts and minds in the most intimate of settings. All the record companies put in offers, and a fortnight after finishing her virtual tour Thom signed a recording contract with RCA executive Craig Logan, live in front of her webcam.audience.

Delays

Tickets - 10.00

Although they're quintessentially English, Southampton's Delays aren't your quintessential Brit-pop band. The darling foursome can avoid being hailed as saviors of pop music by NME simply because they lack swagger. But before the dual pair of brothers -- Greg (vocals/guitar) and Aaron Gilbert (keyboards), and Rowley (drums) and Colin Fox (bass) -- kicked against the decadent scene that ranked Oasis and Blur as supreme during the 1990s, they too were sucked in. They formed Corky and the band's acoustic pop was briefly popular in and around their local Southampton neighborhoods. By 2001, Corky had gone by the wayside and the brotherly bunch formed the Delays. Sun-soaked, '60s-tailored rock melodies developed over a few years' time. Rough Trade's Geoff Travis caught on to this while catching one of the band's private shows in 2003 and offered the band a deal. In July, the Delays' saccharine rock edge of "Hey Girl" went Top 40 in the U.K. Shows with the Thrills, Tim Burgess, and the Sleepy Jackson followed shortly thereafter, giving the Delays a sweet spot among the indie press. "Long Time Coming," the band's second single, charged the Top 20 with a number 16 chart debut in January 2004. As the band hit radio, they also readied for the release of their studio full-length debut. In spring 2004 came the release of Faded Seaside Glamour, which sounded rather like the Hollies meeting the La's for a rainy Sunday drive while picking up the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser for tea. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

"With the work already started on their 2nd album, Dirty Pretty Things have announced plans to tour which includes 3 dates in Scotland.

Speaking to NME at the awards show on 28th Feb the band say ?We?re not interested in making some archetypal self-indulgent second album. Every band feels pressure for their second album because it?s supposed to be an elevation from the first one, but we?ve seen a lot of second albums come out over the past year and most of them aren?t really about anything, they?re just about trying really hard to write hits. We?d like to be able to do what Nirvana did which was to write songs that were popular but also have integrity. So we?re trying to do that I guess. Everything?s got to happen naturally, if it doesn?t it?s just bullshit and people will see through it. We?re not concerned with being massive we just want to be integral.?

Adventures Close To Home has been a party situation since 2004.

ACTH Resident DJs Ill Will and Choaf have played their acid house, acid rock & acid disco records at all manner of clubs, parties, festivals, gigs, after shows, launches, corporate sell-outs and circumcisions including aftershows for Bloc Party, The Strokes, Interpol and alongside James Murphy.

They've destroyed all the best London Clubs including Fabric, Turnmills, 333, The Scala, Canvas and 93 Feet East, as well as bringing most of the party to their own infamous residencies at the Barfly and the Old Blue Last.

They've played records and laptops whilst inebriated at billions of events including several Modular parties, loads of Vice parties, DFA nights, the Boutiques 10th Birthday, Camden Crawl, Tales of the Jackalope, Beetroot Field, Great Escape and Insomniacs Ball. They've also DJed at Club 93, Berlin's premier den of iniquity, as well as being invited to play clubs in NY, Sweden & the Czech Republic.

ACTH also remix stuff – recently: Biffy Clyro, Foals, the Tiger Picks and Holy Hail. All of them sound like a big wobbly monster trying to eat its own bleeps with a rubber fondue spoon. They also like to edit and generally fuck about with other people's music to flagrantly fit their own needs.

Their current line-up includes Chris (vocals, guitar), Roger (bass, vocals, guitar at certain live shows), Vinnie (drums, lyricist), Buddy (trombone, bass at certain live shows) and JR (saxophone). The band’s name derives from a dog Vinnie had while growing up, which was treated better than the rest of the family. It’s also a reference to the phrase “everything is jake,” which is an old phrase meaning everything is cool.

The band recently finished recording their latest studio album, In with the Out Crowd, which was released on May 23rd 2006, in 2 formats: CD, and a CD/DVD special edition, packaged to look like a college yearbook…

Cancer Bats

Cancer Bats have come to destroy. Fueled by a burning desire to rage harder, play louder and have more fun than any other band, Cancer Bats mix hardcore, southern metal and punk rock into a lethal rock and roll explosion.

The band originated in May of 2004 with singer Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton, former member of Toronto metal band At The Mercy Of Inspiration. The two wanted to form a project that combined their favorite parts of bands like Refused, Black flag, Led Zeppelin and Down, among others. The lineup was rounded out with the addition of Andrew McCracken on bass and Mike Peters on drums.

The four-piece wasted no time writing and recording songs for a self-released EP that first saw light in January of 2005. With hundreds of shows, and many epic tours under their belts, Cancer Bats are eager to party in every city, town and metropolis that will have them. Collaborating with On-line and On-Tour means that audiences will be able to see Dodgy in relatively intimate venues, close-up and also that an unsigned talent gets introduced to their audiences across the UK.

Sergeant

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - 8.00

Sergeant

Sergeant have already been creating a buzz around and about their hometown of Glenrothes, Fife, where they bring something sunny to the town, including daffodils, if you want them. It all started one day when two young lads from Coaltown of Balgonie (of all places) decided to try and write a song or two.

These two young hopefuls, DUNCAN and MERCER, managed to compile a few tunes, and decided a 'rythym section' was required. They enlisted the two Jonny's - Sweet and Welfayre, one for drums and one for bass, but due to 'musical differences' , Jonny Welfayre decided that the Royal Navy was more suited to him as a career, pfft. And so he left...
It was at this point that things started to change. A school friend of the one and only Welfayre's was enlisted as a replacement for the loose little deck swabber. He went by the name of ANDERSON, and he had a beard! how could a boy of such an age like 16 have such a full, thick facial foliage? He also used the word "Bud" quite a lot, but not so much nowadays.
Sweet Jonny was moved to rythym guitar.
And then there was no drummer.
And so enlisted was BUCHANAN. He could hit the drums right at least, and finally the young boys could get on with some real work.
Unfortunately, there was another line up change which saw the loss of Sweet Jonny, but his presence is still strongly felt in the band where his guitar technician skills are always put to good use.
And so on went SERGEANT, to show everybody what they had, and to provide everybody with everything they could. They supported Dundee's merry pranksters The View, they played The Barrowlands, The Carling Academy, The Liquid Rooms they played the Rothes Halls many times, of which most were so sold out, even their own friends couldn't get in. Then they played and played and played... They also nearly played T In The Park, but for some obscure reason they never got to. So they played some more...

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - 5.00

Formed in Edinburgh, August 2006, the Vivians were made by long term friends and strangers; Damon, Chris, Kit, Scott & John who are now based in London. With their "gives a fuck" attitude The Vivians do nothing by halves. This attitude may be reminiscent of "punk" although their music refreshingly takes influence from a broader musical spectrum. Twin guitars fighting one another for the rawest, catchiest riff over a disco beat and impassioned vocals of Damon Deville, creating the perfect musical concoction for their exhausting live performances. Such performances have earned them the reputation as being one of the hottest live bands around. The Vivians posses it all; a style, substance and sexual tension for you to listen to, drink to, dance to, fuck and snort glue to in a kind of marvellous beautiful craze that has almost been forgotten today.

"The Vivians are the future... Divided We Stand is an anthem for us all" ...Daily Record

"one of the best frontmen of the minute, with one of the best bands around... 10/10" ...Club NME

"a must see" ...The Sun

"Punk Rockin' Genius" ...Vic Galloway Radio 1 Scotland

"Essentially, The Vivians are all about attitude. Their live performances exude the platoon mentality of The Clash and the unhinged, intense presence of The Voidoids. To top it off, they have the smouldering tunes that make you want to dance, fuck and fight simultaneously." ...The Skinny (Interview, May 2007)

Drowned In Sound - 9/10

Playing with a four-piece backing band, the singer/songwriter performed a stirring 50-minute set, which featured fan favourites 'First Love', 'Gabriel' and 'The Hypnotist's Son'.

The Music

We've been together as people for most of our lives and as a band for the past 6 years. It's been a hell of a journey - Two albums and hundreds of gigs around the world which have been a pleasure to share with those of you who have been there.

Now is a particularly exciting time for us. Our lives have changed so much since we started this fresh from school and went straight on the road. The two years since our second album "Welcome To The North" have been challenging times. We've been working out who we are, sorting our personal lives and trying to push ourselves to write an album that we and other people can believe in. It's been a difficult process at times, but it's been well worth the struggle. The ideas and inspiration we're finding now are stronger than ever. This feels fresh and exciting and we can't wait to share what we're making with people.

We've always known that we can be a great band. Our ambition for our music spans way beyond where we've taken it so far, and in a way, it feels like we are just ending the first chapter of our story and turning the page to the start of the second. In that spirit we've just signed to a new label (Polydor). Finding a new home has been part of this feeling of renewal. It's invigorating to find people who share our passion and belief.

As a band, we don't feel like the music we are hearing and seeing out there is particularly exciting or inspiring. We want to be a part of changing that and hope with our next album we can bring something to the party that isn't out there at the moment.

Lets make these times special again.

See you out there

The Music.

Amusement Parks On Fire
Sporadic, hedonistic, teenage genius from Nottingham.

From TV on The Radio to Secret Machines, it's pretty obvious that prog is the new punk. When it comes to summers of love, no-one wants snotty-nosed misanthropes shooting up sewage when they could have self-indulgent libertines rolling around in fabulous drugs and five-week long tunes. Indeed, so wanton is 19-year-old Michael Feerick, that it has taken him three years from writing this album to finally getting a band together to record it. Still, at least the rest of Nottingham's Amusement Parks On Fire also appreciate the finer things in life. Lick My Bloody Valentine. For this debut is not the prog of tedious old arseholes like Pink Floyd but the shimmering beauty of Kevin Shields, with a side-kick of My Vitriol, Sigur Rós and Spiritualized. Lick 'Venus In Cancer' with its crashing layers of fractured noise tissue, or 'Wiper', which sounds like the sun rising on the greatest night of your life.

ABDC

AB/DC was formed in early 2006, on the back of a long unfulfilled ambition of good friends, Drummer Scott “The Tunk” Reid and Guitarist Brian Massie, to perform the powerful rock anthems of ACDC. AB/DC came to life to the crashes of thunderous applause when they played there first gig at Aberdeen’s Café Drummonds in September 2006, playing to a 300 strong audience. The band continued to play gigs all over Scotland with shows in Glasgow, Dundee, Inverness, Ayr and Edinburgh to name a few cities. In 2007 ABDC headlined the Banshee stage at New Deer’s Wizard festival, and in 2008 they returned to play the festival for a second time. As well as traveling as much as possible, ABDC has continued to play many shows in there hometown of Aberdeen as possible.

ABDC has had many line up changes to date, but the line up is currently settled with Brian Crombie on vocals, Brian ”The Aberdeen Angus” Massie on lead guitar, Davie Hay on bass, Al Smith on Rhythm guitar and Scotty “The Tunk” Reid on drums. ABDC perform a powerful and accomplished ACDC tribute, covering both the Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson eras. The band is slowly developing a reputation as one of the best ACDC tributes in the UK.

The Bookhouse Boys

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - 6.00

Catch them at a calm moment and brace yourself for a storm. These boys toy effortlessly enough with melody and drama to shelve themselves firmly in the London Calling hall of fame. We love 'em...

If Muse and Lloyd Cole were to collaborate on the next Tarantino soundtrack, it might not sound a million miles from this. The Bookhouse Boys' single and London Calling chosen track, Dead, is an epic and no mistaking.

Nine members, two drum kits, a brass section and one commanding presence by way of Paul Van Oestren's vocals make these boys an orchestral force to be reckoned with.

Together two years, the band are now releasing through independent label Black Label Records.

The Bookhouse Boys live

They describe cutting their first record, Tonight, as their best moment so far, but we rather suspect that the imminent success of the single could top that.

Currently playing dates around the capital, The Bookhouse Boys have been entertaining London venues with their collective love of David Lynch and Scott Walker-influenced ballads.

Catch them while they're hot and you might just witness the darkest version of Kylie's Confide In Me you're ever likely to hear.

Keep up to speed on all the band's gigs and releases by following their MySpace link in the right-hand column of this page.

Jamie T
Those who know Jamie T will be familiar with the image of one man, his stool and his acoustic bass guitar. Sounds like an empty Thursday night down the local – but this a solo maestro not an open mic night wannabe. His brand of white reggae, a lyrical genius of incisive social commentary (a bit Mike Skinner but less the council estate chic) twisted around drum’n’bass freestyling, is unique and vivid. And wielding such confidence and aplomb, it’s a performance which is an insightful as is utterly compelling.

BROKEN RECORDS ANNOUNCE UK TOUR DATES TO COINCIDE WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR DEBUT ALBUM “UNTIL THE EARTH BEGINS TO PART” ON 4AD RECORDS ON JUNE 1. THE TITLE TRACK WILL BE RELEASED AS A SINGLE ON MAY 11. “We’re trying to do something different. People forget that music doesn’t have to be just bass, guitar and drums. It can be just as loud and exciting with glockenspiel and trumpet” “One of the country’s most exciting new bands” - NME “How Nirvana might sound had they formed in Belarus instead of Seattle” Q, Jan 2009 “a good outside bet to win the Mercury Music Prize” – News of the World, April 2009 “they simply astound, offering convincing evidence that they could be the UK’s answer to Arcade Fire – purveyors of an epic, swirling, joyfully mysterious music…with a warmth and heart the Canadian band somehow lack” – The Guardian, April 2009 “Utterly unique” - Clash Hotly tipped Scottish seven piece BROKEN RECORDS announce a series of UK tour dates to coincide with the release of their debut album “Until The Earth Begins To Part” on 4AD Records on June 1. The group, who formed in Edinburgh at the end of 2006, have already been tipped for greatness by publications as diverse as NME, Q, The Word, The Sun, The Fly, News Of The World, Clash, The Skinny and Drowned in Sound – a series of three independently released singles released in 2008 led NME to call them “an incredible proposition – set to go stellar as soon as they decide on a lucky label to sign to”. The album features ten tracks and was recorded in Monnow Valley studio in Monmouth with producer Ian Caple.

He released his first 5 track EP for digital download in April 2008 and more recently has produced a 3-track Double B Side called 'Lion Hat' on Euphonios Records.

Telegraphs

Moments of sweet delicacy ripped apart by the explosion of distorted guitars with soaring vocals that rise over impassioned choruses. Formed in the autumn of 2005 by lead vocalist Darcy Harrison and guitarist Graham Ward, the band moved through several incarnations in its early stages until drummer Sam Bacon, bassist/vocalist Hattie Williams and guitarist Darren LeWarne found their places within the band. These five friends, having all drifted into Brighton from various places across the country, have found a common ground in the escape from their small town upbringings. Telegraphs draw influences from the likes of Idlewild, Radiohead, Hope Of The States, Jeff Buckley and Biffy Clyro.

The release of their debut single So Cold/Ariel (Nighthawks Records) in the autumn of 2006 sparked a wave of interest in the band that continues to ripple and expand. The single has received national airplay in the UK, and was awarded single of the week status by two of London's independent radio stations. Internet fanzines quickly caught on, describing this freshman release as 'inanely catchy, brilliantly effective… has the appeal to transcend the boundaries of underground and mainstream indie" (God Is In The TV). This affirming attention, as well as some exceptional live performances, lead to the band playing sold out shows with Babybird and Seattle's cult heroes Idiot Pilot, as well as an unforgettable appearance with Dogs at Bath University Freshers' Week.
