Parka
Late 2004 and Parka lead singer/songwriter Matt Thomson, becoming tired of his music studies at Perth College of Music, decides to head back to sunny Glasgow and put his collection of home recordings to good use. Music shops, internet and colleges were scoured for players and finally February 2005 saw the birth of Parka as a 4 piece indie/electro rock outfit with the smiley energy of a drummer called Neil, the calm presence of a bassist – Ian, and the eerie strangeness of a keyboard technocrat named Mark. Matt’s charming, childlike stage energy helped to win the band the attention they deserved, even back in the early days of their low-fi casio-infused moments.

A year down the line they were offered a single deal for their manic anthem ‘Disco Dancer’ through influential tastemaker 7” label Worst Case Scenario. Summer 2006 brought Parka to London in preparation for their debut single where they found themselves living in an old strip club in Whitechapel, resplendent with pole in the living room and chair screwed to the floor outside the shower cubicle! First time guests to the Parka residence must perform at least one initiation pole dance for the band.

'Disco Dancer’ took many by surprise, winning Zane Lowe’s Fresh Meat on Radio 1, getting playlisted on XFM. The video (complete with balloon drum kit, guitar and sax) made it onto The Box and Q.

The bigger labels came calling and Jeepster won the race for their signature whilst the band continued to claim London’s indie clubs as their own, toured with Boy Kill Boy, opened for The Automatic and sold out Glasgow’s King Tuts.

Now permanent residents in London while they record their album, Parka’s first single on Jeepster, set for release in 2007, will introduce a wider audience to the excitement of the bands guitar and sax driven dance excursions

'Like an afrobeat don caballero' - Franz Ferdinand.

Foals, along with their peers Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, have been the one of the most impressive, forward-thinking bands Oxford has had to offer over the last few years. After a small break, due to the loss of a band member, they're back with a new name, three new members and an adaptation of their previously irregular time signatures, angular guitar interplay and dissonance, to try and create the 'future of pop music'.

Sons and Daughters
In the summer of 2006, Sons And Daughters holed up in a house in the village of Adfern on the west coast of Scotland. They had no television, no telephones, and worked on new songs in a converted barn for eight hours every day. "We wrote and practiced all day and played poker and got drunk at night. We were committed to writing a great pop record," says Adele Bethel. "We all love Blondie and The Smiths and we wanted to embrace that and not repeat what we had done before. Then we thought: who would be the perfect producer for a record like this?"

Domino’s Laurence Bell suggested Bernard Butler, and all being huge Suede fans the band agreed. This Gift bears out that Butler and Sons And Daughters make a winning combination, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time of recording. "He’s very, very tough," says Scott Paterson. "He doesn’t sugar-coat anything and we had a lot of clashes. Then we heard the playbacks of the songs and it all began to make sense." Adds Adele: "At first it was his way or no way. Then Scott got talking to him about Joe Meek and Bert Jansch and we started to click."

The result, despite or perhaps because of the tensions and struggles that came during its recording, is an album on which a unique, inspired band step up onto a whole new level.

The Complete Stone Roses

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £15

Scottish favourite's "The Complete Stone Roses" have offered to help music fans in Aberdeen, affected by the recent closure of the Lemon Tree venue which went bankrupt last December without warning, by offering to honour tickets already purchased at their new show. a spokesman for the band said ""after the lemon tree went bankrupt, the band felt terrible about their fans being left out of pocket , so they've arranged a new date at Aberdeen's "Moshulu" on Friday 11th April 2008 and have offered to exchange the tickets for the cancelled show for tickets for the new show via promotions company PCL who have helped the band to arrange this one off gig"

The tribute act widely regarded as one of the most successful, are well known for their kind gestures. Last December they performed two sell out shows at the Glasgow Carling Academy and managed to raise an incredible £17,000 for Cancer Research UK from the 2nd night and later this year they will be releasing a single (remake of Joy Divisions "Love Will Tear Us Apart") specifically to benefit the charity.
In relation to the ticket fiasco faced by fans who have have been told to "put claims into the recievers" the band members are quoted to have said "we dont see why any music fan should have to suffer because of mismanagement of a venues money, the lemon tree should have paid back everyone who purchased tickets in good faith for any show but instead they have left it down to bands like us who have not only lost income through the cancelation itself but are also having to clean up the lemon tree's mess, we didn't even know the gig was cancelled until about 2 weeks to go"

Exchanges are available from One Up Records, Aberdeen from Wed 6th Feb 2008 and are available until 30th March 2008.

The Futureheads

Tickets - £11.00

The Futureheads

With a million young bands all citing the same post-punk records as their main inspiration, the Futureheads have found a niche for themselves by working from the same building blocks and creating something that rings truer than the rest.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the band sound a lot like XTC did in their earliest days. Once you get past that, you can hear that they've got their own songs and ideas worming their way through this jagged, explosive, tight and highly tuneful concoction. The fact that all four members take on vocal duties and engage in some twisted harmonies and vocal trade-offs that are nearly dizzying also helps bring the band into their own.

This Sunderland four-piece are both an intriguing and powerful mass of contradictions. They are a band who - like all the best bands – look and feel like a gang, but who, in this instance, can rarely agree on anything at all. A band who have deliberately set themselves only short-term, low-key goals, but are, realistically, on the verge of going all the way. A band who recognise and salute the DIY ethic, while simultaneously detesting its implicit under-achievement. A band who can accurately cite Devo, Queen, Fugazi and Kate Bush as influences, but who have carved out their own instantly identifiable sonic niche.

The band released its debut single in late 2002, and followed it up with two more singles in 2003, 123 Nul and First Day, both of which were issued by the Fantastic Plastic label. 679 stepped up to release the band's self-titled full-length in mid-2004 and the band haven't looked back since with their single "The Hounds Of Love" reaching the top 10 in the UK charts.

After quickly establishing themselves on their local music scene, they played several well-attended shows in Aberdeen before then heading across the Atlantic Ocean to perform shows in New York and Los Angeles.   Therapy music can be the best or worst on the planet. Cobble together a backing band from members of your rehab support group and mither miserably through your woes and you’ll produce self-important dross worthy of David Gray on methadone. But if you exercise as well as exorcise your demons, if you plunge headfirst into your sea of troubles and drink, dance, roar, wriggle and scream your way to the other side, then you’ll come out with an album of legend: a ‘Funeral’, a ‘Nevermind’, a ‘Holy Bible’. Thankfully for Lewis Gale, ex of Glasgow maths rock combo Fickle Public, he took the latter option. Shaken up by the death of his younger brother and finding a well of emotional songwriting bursting out of him at the start of 2006, he made the thoroughly sensible decision to hook up with his technically-minded mate Gordon, drink beer, listen to Huey Lewis and Kiss, watch Flaming Lips DVDs and work through the sack of shit on his back in the manner of the thriving Canadian emo-art scene of Broken Social Scene and The Arcade Fire.

Metro Riots
Metro Riots are four young men who've emerged from a life of crime and grime to unleash their unforgettable blend of rock and delta blues on an unsuspecting but jubilant audience.  After establishing themselves as London‘s finest live act, Metro Riots were enticed out of the city for nationwide tours with Dirty Pretty Things and The Charlatans throughout May and June last year. They caused uproar and inspired devotion at every stop.

This is a band who live it like they play it - hard, dirty and victorious. The single established the band with UK press ("... a rip roaring blues rallying call...Single of the Week" - The Sun) and radio ("One of the best live bands around, I love them and so should you!" – John Kennedy, Xfm) and the boys embarked on their first tour of Europe, supporting Juliette & The Licks in October/November.

“We sing our version of the blues” states singer Damo. “We’re influenced by the likes of Leadbelly, Blind Willie McTell and then The Stooges, New York Dolls, even Nirvana and Oasis. Fucked up and feeling it... those lot knew it and so do we.” Non-stop touring throughout last year has consolidated the fanbase and attracted the attention of the bigger labels. 2007 is set to be a busy year for Metro Riots with appearances at South by Southwest in March and a second stint in Europe with Juliette & The Licks along with relentless touring in the UK throughout the summer. "Metro Riots – brash blues punk that will leave you dazed and in love" - NME

Shai Hulud - CANCELLED - refunds from point of purchase.
Shai Hulud is well-known within the hardcore scene for their often complex compositions and misanthropic lyrics. Originally hailing from Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band's musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing. After the release of 2003's That Within Blood Ill-Tempered and a number of tours going into the subsequent year, Shai Hulud and vocalist Geert Van Der Velde mutually decided it was for the best he leave the band. Acknowledging some people may misinterpret the parting as the end of Shai Hulud, the band came out on their homepage indicating that they would not be breaking up; instead, the band would change name to The Warmth of Red Blood and continue what had been started with Shai Hulud. At the same time, they also started requesting that anyone who considered themselves up for the challenge of taking over vocal duties record a demo of themselves performing the track "Whether to Cry or Destroy" (quite similar to what The Dillinger Escape Plan did when auditioning new vocalists). In March of 2006, the band announced they were abandoning the moniker 'The Warmth Of Red Blood' and keeping the name Shai Hulud.

In August of 2006, the band signed with Metal Blade Records. Shai Hulud also have a side project named Zombie Apocalypse, whose sound can be summed up as a faster, more chaotic and more manic version of its mother band. It features Matt Fox, Matt Fletcher, Ronen Kaufman, and Greg Thomas.

Silverstein
One would be hard-pressed to come up with a more fitting title for Silverstein's new album than Arrivals & Departures. After all, this Canadian band sold over 300,000 of their previous release, Discovering The Waterfront, on the strength of word-of-mouth and a nonstop touring schedule that saw them crisscrossing the globe. The full-throated rock passion that pervades all 11 songs on Arrivals & Departures emphatically depicts a band that has...well, arrived. Silverstein is about to depart the realm of grassroots phenomenon to enter the stratosphere of critical mass success.

It's been a long, but thrilling trip for this quintet, who came together in the Toronto suburb of Burlington, Ontario at the turn of the millennium. After putting out two of their own EPs, the band signed to Victory Records and released When Broken Is Easily Fixed, which raised eyebrows throughout North America as sales climbed well past 200,000. Showing no ill effects of any "sophomore jinx," Silverstein's follow-up Discovering The Waterfront did considerably better; now total Silverstein record sales are beyond a half-million. The band fueled that momentum by performing on a slew of major tours, from A Taste of Chaos and Warped in the States to the Give It A Name and Download festivals in England. They topped it all off with their first headlining tour of America-the sold-out Never Shave Again tour.

Captain

Doors - 8:00 PM

Captain
In a musical era dominated by bands who seem to exist solely within highly specific camps - be it art rock, New York-style indie posturing or something similarly unappealing - Captain are a glorious anomaly. A rum bunch of five distinctly individual people, their music sounds quintessentially of itself. Consequently, Captain are very nearly unique, 2006's most handsome black sheep. "I've never felt particularly part of the scene," says the band's singer Rik Flynn, "whichever scene we happen to be talking about. It's not something I've ever set out to sidestep, it's just the way things are. Of course, I'm aware that this is something that can work against you, but right now, it seems to be working for us." He takes the cigarette he has been earnestly puffing away on from his mouth and blows a self-satisfied smoke ring. "And that pleases me enormously." Captain's music is joyful, clattering, full of divergent moodswings, the jubilant crescendoes of male/female vocal sparring and, just occasionally, the trill parp of a trumpet. Above all else, as Rik Flynn will tell you himself, the band's music is, "hopeful, emotional and euphoric. Whether it's melancholy or we're singing stories about people dying of cancer, we still want to cheer everybody up." And that they do with no little flair. Their debut album, ‘This is Hazelville’, produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC) is a triumph, a record possessing the combustible energy of Arcade Fire with the theatrical thrum of Flaming Lips and the sheer exuberance of a six year-old anticipating Christmas. You may well have already heard their debut single Frontline. Well, its bug-eyed oh-oh-OH!s are typical of the band's ability to hypnotise. This is wonderfully involving music.

Architects

What a year it's been for Brighton, UK quintet ARCHITECTS. Formed in late 2004, the band immediately became hometown heroes; grabbing attention through support slots with Nile and Napalm Death. But it was in May 2006, with the release of their debut album 'Nightmares' via In At The Deep End Records (Gallows, Send More Paramedics) that Architects stepped onto the global map.
'Nightmares', written and recorded while Architects averaged an age of just 17, was critically acclaimed across the board, and the quintet toured relentlessly in its support; trekking across the UK and Europe with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Sikth, The Chariot, Johnny Truant and Beecher and appearing at festivals such as Guilfest, Collision Course, Uxfest and Ghostfest. The band's first headline tour in January 2007 was also a sure-fire success, with several dates sold out past capacity.

Somehow, amongst all the touring activity, Architects found the time to complete the follow up to 'Nightmares' dissonant call to arms, and ingratiated a new member into their ranks in the form of frontman Sam Carter - who seamlessly replaced 'Nightmares' vocalist Matt Johnson during the bands January 2007 headline tour; his powerful throat adding new layers of aggression and dynamics to the Architects sound. And now, only a year since 'Nightmares' technical, clinical bite was first revealed, Architects will unleash their stunning second album RUIN via UNITED BY FATE RECORDS, a newly established UK imprint of Distort Entertainment. Recorded at Outhouse Studios, Reading with producers John Mitchell and Ben Humphreys (Enter Shikari, Funeral For A Friend), 'Ruin' is truly Architects' defining moment; a visceral, uncompromised statement of intent that effortlessly balances unfathomable musicianship with intelligent, compelling songwriting.

Twinkling in the night sky of the shining Montreal music scene, famously home to Arcade Fire, The Dears and Stars’ friends and sometime collaborators Broken Social Scene, Stars produce delicate, sophisticated, fun, pretty, warm music that recalls “those fifteen seconds in your life when you kissed someone and it broke your heart”. They claim that in writing current album Set Yourself On Fire they were aiming for a straight-up sex record, but ended up writing a sex and death and robots record – in Stars, everything that starts off simple blows up big, ornate and rich. Don’t miss the soft revolution as Stars sparkle at the Barfly.

Pendleton -

"Right now, Pendleton are the best skate-punk band in the UK.”
(Punktastic.com)

“Marrying the force of Rise Against with the playfulness of NOFX but bringing a large streak of originality as well, Pendleton are undeniably a hot prospect. Tearing through a strong set with mach speed and razor precision, songs like Falling Apart to Double Time sound great live... A great show from an exciting new band."
(Rocksound)

“This EP might just be one of the best skatecore/melodic punk rock records in the last few years. Brilliant."
(MetalOrgie.com)

"Rocket-Fueled and supersonic, the quartet has taken that classic Cali sound and added a decidedly British slant... Pendleton play punk rock before it became obsessed with haircuts and fashion; when it was true and honest and played with passion."
(Big Cheese)

Pendleton have just completed a stint at the Vans sponsored Warped tour and their own headline tour afterwards.

Yashin - "I must admit, when I see the word 'screamo' I tend to turn and run the other way, but not in this case, quite the opposite effect really, I found myself quite addicted and listening to the songs over and over. Proving in the most hard core of ways, that the music scene doesn't have to be all about making and playing the safe indie pop stuff, and that they are bands still out there who can create music that brings out the heavy artillery and not just relies on someone screaming down a mic for the sheer effect of it all. They've created a perfect balance of the screamo and metal that lets their raw talent shine through in its best possible ways." - (Infuzed)

Yashin have shared the stage with the Lostprophets, Flood of Red, Kids In Glass Houses, My Mind's Weapon, Ghost of a Thousand, Zico Chain, Dividing The Line, We Are The Ocean and many more...

PMX - After 8 years together, playing countless shows and recording several self-financed cds, Pmx have developed into one of Britains top melodic punk rock bands.

Having played alongside world renowned bands such as Alexisonfire, Anti-Flag, OPM, Taking Back Sunday and Propagandhi to name a few, the band released their debut album 'Rise and Shine' on 3 independent labels - Bells On Records (Japan, Europe) Milk And Cookies (Canada) and Allstar-Recordings (Uk).

The quartet have toured the UK, Canada, and Europe to promote the album and are soon to hit Japan.

After being selected to play the Taste Of Chaos Tour 06, the band went on to win Ernie Balls International Battle Of The Bands Competition, winning £10,000 of equipment from sponsors.

Pmx have received airplay from Radio 1 DJ Mike Davies numerous times and were included on his 'Tipped for 2007' play list.

allstationsdown - allstationsdown are 6 lads from the north-east playing a bleeding assault of screamo-hardcore that can be likened to Underoath and Beloved. They have shared the stage with bands such as A Poetic Yesterday, Civilsed, My Minds Weapon and Clearer The Sky.

Bring Me The Horizon
Bring Me the Horizon, five young British lads with a penchant for heavy. Essentially This is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For is an 18 minute mid nineties breakdown; four tracks of intense raging chugging and squealing, stop/starting and severe ‘core riffing. Nary a second hand euro thrash riff to be found, nary a melodic sung chorus, all things about this genre that irritate me are devoid (well save for girls pants and backwards hair-cuts). I was sold on TIWTEOYSWMF after viewing a minute long promo clip on MySpace featuring the indomitable closing mosh to “They Have No Reflection” (which damn well better be a song about vampires) with live footage. I was sold on the sheer intensity of their attack, the stone cold passion with which they present their sound. A nonstop attack, the vocals never quit, the raspy screech and pit growling, gang screams and occasional spoken epitaphs, the power of these dudes does not stop, the violence does not cease until the last seconds of harried screaming (very reminiscent of a certain Acrid track) and the line “I fucking love you… .”

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £3 Door (£7 refund applicable to tickets sold)

John Power
John Power's new material may be of some surprise to fans of his previous bodies of work with The Las and Cast, because to all intent and purposes it seemed he had withdrawn from the music scene, appearing occasionally at bespoke intimate gigs, but in the main he had disappeared off the scene for a while. It appears this was all a necessary part of the process to get to be where he had to be at allowing the new material to develop organically and re-establish his voice and technique.

Its closest to the music I listen to- its no longer about the youthful style where the tempo is faster the strokes are more considered crafted and temperate, and the dynamic now lies in the lyrics and form. I dont need to grip so hard and I can let go a bit more now and the guitar feels easier in my hand.
