Los Campesinos!
Hold on now youngster, this is a good thing to look into the maw of the void, but let's not be excessive, there is still Los Campesinos!. And one day you will wake in the middle of the night and the water on your face will not be from the cold sweat that your dreams of impending doom have produced but from tears of joy squeezed out by a lingering melody, a droning violin, a haunting mantra or a panic attack brought on by a song so tight and serene and messy and polished and dense that it suffocates you like the fumes of the paint that made your favourite album covers. Oh for God's sake, it's just pop music!

On sale: Friday 12 September @ 9am

As we limp from our washout of a summer into the long, dark days of autumn, fear not, we bring good news. MTV TWO’s Gonzo On Tour is gearing up for its annual romp around the UK.

An event that has become as synonymous with October as Halloween itself,
Gonzo On Tour reigns supreme in any avid music fan’s calendar. This year promises big talent in little venues. We will be cramming headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, The Automatic, Mystery Jets, Foals and Glasvegas into teeny-weeny venues. Why? So you can get up close and personal with your favourite performers. A far cry from the blips-on-screen you may have squinted at the festivals, you will literally be able to shower in the sweat of your idols!

A cracking support line-up: Iglu And Hartly, Noah And The Whale, Late Of The Pier, Esser, Friendly Fires and Magistrates, are all confirmed for the UK-wide tour.

Hosted by Zane Lowe and supported by Topman, the Gonzo Tour bus will land in Liverpool on Friday 10th October to kick off the revelry.

Gonzo on Tour has always been about the best of new talent...nurturing little known bands that have gone on to be huge. Previous Gonzo on Tour alumni include Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro... the tour has also provided Maximo Park, Razorlight, and 2008 headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, with their debut TV performances.

Reeling from last year’s 5th Birthday celebrations, culminating in the still talked about Queens Of The Stone Age bash, the Gonzo team have delivered once again in securing this year’s stellar line-up. In addition to plucking hot new thangs including, Iglu And Hartley and Noah And The Whale, Gonzo veterans, Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party pay homage to their favourite brown couch to headline the London and Glasgow dates respectively.

MTV TWO cameras will be filming at each gig and will capture backstage interviews and mayhem to air from Friday 14th November at 7pm.

Here's one Brooklyn duo that can be counted upon to keep it freak, with an ear for pop and a bent for retro-fetishism from 70s prog and 80s synth-pop to 90s electronica. Dirty vintage synths layered over frenetic drums – go figure these guys grafting the visceral power of the oscillator to a human percussionist. This is Kraftwerk / Add N to (X) / Trans Am. This is punk's force and fury without the amateurism and stunted imagination; and prog's wisdom without it's twiddlydiddly w*nk. Highly recommended.

Xfm 10th Birthday

EVENT CANCELLED: Stereophonics have been forced to cancel their Xfm 10th Birthday Show at ULU this Saturday 6th October, following frontman Kelly Jones recent arm injury.

Kelly consulted a specialist at the end of last week and he was advised not to play guitar for a further three weeks. Kelly's determination to continue has meant that the band will still go into the Xfm studio this Friday to play 3 songs live on Ian Camfield's Drivetime show as part of his 'Live From Leicester Square'. The band are looking to re-schedule the 10th Birthday show at the nearest convenience to Xfm.

Stereophonics very much regret having to cancel this show and are aware how disappointing this is for the fans who’ve already won tickets on Xfm and have been waiting a long time to see the band. Kelly is devastated at the timing of this and apologises to all the fans, here's a note from the man himself...

"Due to troubles in a dark seedy club and being thrown onto the street
resulting in surgery and pampering by lovely nurses I am afraid to report I
cannot play Saturday's show and for that I am gutted. My arm will return to
full cannon force shortly and I will be back stronger than bulldog trying to
snap his chain. May your house be free from tigers. Bless you all." Kelly.

Meanwhile the brand new single It Means Nothing has hit the shops this week and the new album Pull The Pin will follow on October 15th.

Justin Currie

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £17.00

Justin Currie
Justin Currie was born in a van near Paisley in 1964 in a hailstorm so vicious that it took a team of panel beaters a month to separate his forehead from the roof. Later on, perhaps in the nineteen eighties he started to sing in a strange breathless way, cramming too many words into odd amounts of bars and found himself, with his group of twee schoolboy punks, Del Amitri, getting firmly up the collective nose of the Glasgow white-soul cognoscenti. Much more loathed than loved, and revelling in their outsider status, Del Amitri attracted a dense little coterie of followers in the United States of America who duly set up a nationwide tour funded by busking, badge selling and the refrigerators of those fans' generous parents. Driven half-mental by their experiences the group came home, ditched their indie twiddling and embarked upon a course of songwriting so sickeningly mainstream and Americanised that it led to a long career being spoilt stupid by the radio and recording industries of the English speaking world. Limos to the pub, ponds full of chips, week-long parties in Bognor, that sort of thing. By 2002 the thing had run it's cliched course; the group's fortunes were dwindling and, dropped by a record firm grown weary of their whining, the two chief writers put the band into cryogenic suspension and set about writing two LPs; a Justin Currie Alone affair and an entirely co-written electronic pop masterpiece. Justin's solo record is called "Rebound" and features eleven thunderously dreary dirges many of which he is currently airing live to pained looking crowds of people in dingy Glasgow basements. When forced by penury, politeness or acute fear he can sometimes also be heard to trawl out tired versions of his withered hits. Justin is unmarried and lives a quiet life of standing up and sitting down in Scotland with his two pet television sets.

If you've got what it takes to organise Oxjam events, whether your passion is for classical music or club nights; folk, funk or punk, we'd love to hear from you. You'll gain valuable experience, meet new people, get involved with your local music scene and have a great time while helping to raise loads of money and learning more about Oxfam's work to end poverty.

Check out these stats - Oxjam will be twice as big this year with around 40,000 musicians and an audience of 300,000 expected to take part in 3,000 music events in October for Oxjam - the biggest music festival ever in the UK. The Music

We've been together as people for most of our lives and as a band for the past 6 years. It's been a hell of a journey - Two albums and hundreds of gigs around the world which have been a pleasure to share with those of you who have been there.

Now is a particularly exciting time for us. Our lives have changed so much since we started this fresh from school and went straight on the road. The two years since our second album "Welcome To The North" have been challenging times. We've been working out who we are, sorting our personal lives and trying to push ourselves to write an album that we and other people can believe in. It's been a difficult process at times, but it's been well worth the struggle. The ideas and inspiration we're finding now are stronger than ever. This feels fresh and exciting and we can't wait to share what we're making with people.

We've always known that we can be a great band. Our ambition for our music spans way beyond where we've taken it so far, and in a way, it feels like we are just ending the first chapter of our story and turning the page to the start of the second. In that spirit we've just signed to a new label (Polydor). Finding a new home has been part of this feeling of renewal. It's invigorating to find people who share our passion and belief.

As a band, we don't feel like the music we are hearing and seeing out there is particularly exciting or inspiring. We want to be a part of changing that and hope with our next album we can bring something to the party that isn't out there at the moment.

Lets make these times special again.

See you out there

The Music.

BREED77 were formed at the tail-end of the last century as a reaction to the boring state of music that defined rock at the time. Hailing from Gibraltar, the band was formed in London, U.K. which has remained their base ever since, and from which they have travelled all over the planet touring their 4 albums. Mixing their native mediterranean influences with contemporary rock and metal, in a combination of English and Spanish, BREED77 have come up with an exciting fusion that has garnered critical acclaim and managed to break into the mainstream - even charting on the U.K. TOP 40!

The Miskatonic Foundation

Pagan Altar is a doom metal band formed in 1978 in Brockley, England. Alongside Witchfinder General, they are one of the few NWOBHM bands to play doom metal. Although they were ignored by mainstream metal media during the early and mid 80s, their influence did not emerge until after the 80s incarnation had broken up.

Their gigs were characterized by moody, epic and heavy music interpreted with highly visual stage aspect which accented their interest for occult themes. Pagan Altar's only release from that era was independent, self-released, self-titled album which was in later years often bootlegged. It was finally officially re-released on Oracle Records in 1998 and titled Volume 1.

In 2004, Pagan Altar reunited, re-recorded and released their previously unfinished second album, Lords of Hypocrisy. These songs date back to the first 1980s incarnation. Also in 2004, The Time Lord LP was released, which contains recordings that date back to the band's inception in 1978.

Their third album, Mythical & Magical was released in late 2006 and features a considerable amount of material that also date back prior to the 1982 release.

Skewed rock idols Silver Jews return to play new material

Mainstay Berman, (who founded Silver Jews with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich in 1990), has promised a live extravaganza in the wake of last year's excellent Tanglewood Numbers album (the band's sixth - it featured 'honorary Jews' Will Oldham, Lambchop's Tony Crow and ex-member Malkmus amongst others). As one might expect from the self-proclaimed 'dumbfounding psyche-theistic humanist hawk-rockers', this will be no everyday gig…

"The Scala show was... Utterly thrilling: a 17-song set that ranged blissfully across the entire back catalogue, punctuated with engaging banter from the frontman and, in honour of old times perhaps, a dirty joke. It was practically a blueprint for live shows; anyone would have thought Berman had been at this for years." 4/5 The Guardian

MONOTONIX "When the lead singer burst on to stage, we weren't really sure it was the lead singer. It could've been some fan. Or, I don't know, a vagrant. Within 30 seconds he had leapt the security fence and into the audience, where he spent most of the performance. I don't think I've spent that much time looking behind me at a show. They pulled down the drums, the guitar, and everything came into the audience. We all played till the end."

"Since the times that Fugazi, Unwound, and Les Savy Fav have left me speechless from their sonic force and physical fearlessness, I have not been as floored by a band as I was watching this bass-less trio unfold." - Seattle Weekly

Tour in support of New Album "On Your Sleeve"

Recorded over seven days and featuring interpretations of classic singer-songwriters Tom Waits and Neil Young, contemporary greats such as The Hold Steady and The Kills, punk icons The Ramones and The Clash, Lou Reed and even a Sam Cooke standard – Jesse tips his hat to a small collection of writers that inform his unique musical identity and appeal. As a performing songwriter, Jesse appreciated the challenge of covering unique melodies not of his own design. Or, as Jesse puts it: “seven days of crazy fun, trying on other peoples’ clothes in my own apartment…” From hearing Jim Croce’s ‘Operator’ as a boy on a long car journey; chancing upon The Kills’ second album in an independent record store while touring the UK, pondering upon the “real, big love” that lies at the heart of classics like ‘Wonderful World’ and obsessing with the dark lyrics of Elton John’s ‘Harmony’, music is everything to Jesse Malin, and live sets have long been punctuated with his reworking of others’ material. On Your Sleeve then, is the blossoming of an idea that has gnawed at Jesse for a few years now, and one that sees him paying back “all those songs that hit me at certain points in my life and never stopped”.

The Donnas

The Donnas

All band members were born in 1979. Brett Anderson is the singer of the band, Allison Robertson is the guitarist, Maya Ford is the bass player, and Torry Castellano plays the drums. As best friends, they formed in the eighth grade to play for their school's "Day on the Green." The only girl band in their town Palo Alto, California, they were relatively unknown until they were out of high school. They are all self-taught musicians and practiced in Castellano's garage nearly every day during high school.

Towards the end of their high school days, while they were still known as "The Electrocutes", they decided to create another band (with the same members) which they would use to play softer tunes without distorting the metal queen image of The Electrocutes. To further distinguish the difference between the two bands, they all took matching "Donna" monikers, where all of their names were Donna, and their last names were the first initial of their last name (Brett Anderson became Donna A) which they used only when performing as "The Donnas". Although they initially planned on dropping The Donnas after a while and sticking with The Electrocutes, they changed their minds after high school and stuck with the Donnas instead, while still keeping their Donna names. They are sometimes described as a punk band, but the band itself denies any kind of affiliation with the punk rock movement.

Experimenting with different musical styles, they underwent a variety of band names (Screen, Ragady Anne, and The Electrocutes) before settling on The Donnas. They worked with producer Darin Raffaelli for their first two albums, the first of which, simply called The Donnas, was entirely written by Raffaelli and released on his own Superteem! record label. (It was later released again on Lookout! Records.) They took a week off of their senior year of high school to tour Japan and experimented with riot grrrl, calling themselves The Electrocutes. Afterwards, they signed with Lookout! Records. As the band grew, they were urged to sign with a major label company. In 2001, they signed with Atlantic Records.

In 2002, The Donnas released Spend the Night. The album was their mainstream break through, spawning the hit single "Take it Off" and appearances on Total Request Live, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Late Show with David Letterman. In the summer of 2003, they played the main stage at Lollapalooza. In 2004, they released their sixth album Gold Medal. In February 2005, they toured Australia with the Big Day Out music festival, playing from Sydney to Perth.

Their influences are Guns N' Roses, KISS, Anthrax (John Bush era), L7, and The Ramones.

The Donnas' music has repeatedly been featured in video game soundtracks. "You've Got A Crush On Me" can be heard in the PlayStation 2 game, Splashdown. "Who Invited You" can be found on soundtrack for True Crime: Streets of LA and MVP Baseball 2003. "I Don't Want to Know" is in the Gran Turismo 4 soundtrack also and a cover of the song was also used for Donkey Konga 2 for the Nintendo GameCube. A cover of "Take it Off" is featured in Guitar Hero (released in 2005) and Downhill Domination (released in 2004).

The Donnas' music has also made various appearances in film and media. The band appeared in the movie Drive Me Crazy in 1999 (as the Electrocutes), and more recently appeared on the TV show "Charmed" performing the single "Fall Behind Me" at P3. They also appeared in the teen comedy Jawbreaker as the prom band, contributing two songs to the soundtrack ("Rock 'N' Roll Machine" and "Checkin' It Out"). A cover of "Roll On Down The Highway" was used in a Disney commercial. The Donnas can also be heard on Mean Girls during the end credits playing a cover of the Billy Idol song "Dancing With Myself", and they also contributed to the soundtrack of the movie Grind. The video "Too Bad About Your Girl" also features the cast of the film Grind. The song Take It Off features in the movie Dodgeball.

Matt Berry first appeared on British television in the comedy series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, where he portrayed the dual role of fictional '80s actor Todd Rivers who plays the part of Dr. Lucien Sanchez in the main body of the show. As a musician, Matt Berry composed all of the music for Snuff Box, as well the music for AD/BC: A Rock Opera, which he co-wrote with Richard Ayoade. This program was a half-hour parody of overblown musicals in general and Jesus Christ Superstar in particular, telling the story of the innkeeper who allowed Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to sleep in his manger which featured Fulcher and The Mighty Boosh's stars, Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. Berry has also composed music for the BBC 2 Steve Coogan comedy Saxondale and the theme song for the Channel 4 sketch show Blunder. He has released two albums: "Jackpot" in 1995, and "Opium" in 2005. The Subways

It's been a long adventure for The Subways since the Welwyn Garden City trio emerged fresh-faced and exuberant with their 2005 debut album 'Young For Eternity'. Now their second album 'All Or Nothing' is scheduled for release. With their teenage days still relatively recently behind them, the band have already experienced more than most bands endure in an entire career.
The combination of frustration and fresh influences from the likes of Refused, Death Cab For Cutie, Mclusky and Shellac has provoked the vehement dynamics that are infused in the new album's most vitriolic moments.
The band opted to head to Los Angeles to record the album with producer extraordinaire Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth). Vig proved to be a powerful influence on the band with all three members eager to highlight his intelligence and musical prowess.

"Coming back to the UK was almost too comfortable for us," says Lunn of the band's decision to join Vig in Los Angeles when he had offered to come to England for the recording process. "We like to keep ourselves on our toes and we wanted to dive into this record and make it the best we could." He replicated this philosophy with his lyrics, adding, "I really wore my heart on my sleeve. All the trials and tribulations that we've been through, they're there. I haven't left anything to myself."

The result is that 'All Or Nothing' recalls the exuberance of 'Young For Eternity' while embarking up an adventurous sonic progression.

Electric Soft Parade

The Electric Soft Parade are masters of reinvention. If you trace your favourite artists there can be said to be two groups, those who peddle and stick to a sound you love (think Oasis, the Strokes, Abba, – for example) and those that constantly twist and turn your perceptions of them and push their own abilities as performers and writers, whilst still somehow never losing their own inimitable traits (think Robert Wyatt, The Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals). With ‘No Need To Be Downhearted’ the Electric Soft Parade root themselves as firmly in the latter category.

Most of us know that Tom and Alex White are from Brighton, that they pretty much put Brighton on the music map and that they’re tireless musicians, intent on breaking musical systems, formulas and public perceptions. Most of us also know that 2002 saw ‘Holes In The Wall’ (DB Records) released to great critical acclaim. Everyone loved it: the past and the future collided on one record, all the boxes were gloriously ticked, and the accolades (Q best new band award, Mercury Music Prize nomination) came rolling in.
The unceasing energy of these boys shines through in all their endeavors: both continue to play with Eamon Hamilton and Marc Beatty in funktry-punk-disco supergroup Brakes whilst contributing to a number of other Brighton-based projects, too: Alex recording and playing live with noise-harmonists Actress Hands, Tom providing drums for instrumental hip-hop collective Restlesslist. And now, with a brand new album of their own, they're at it again, this time as space-age power-balladeers and digital terrorist-rockers. The world is still their oyster.

“Kaki King is … one of the most astounding pleasures in recent memory. Somewhere between funk and flamenco, she picks and bangs heretofore unheard sounds out of a flattop. 'Tis not hyperbollocks to proclaim that she is to the acoustic what Hendrix was to the electric.” – Michael Simmons, LA Weekly

“And while seeing her live can be a jaw on the floor experience that changes everything you thought you knew about the guitar, with her third album, “…Until We Felt Red,” a fully formed star is born.” -- Andy Langer, Esquire

The Wedding Present

+ Lucky Soul + Calvin Party

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £16

The Wedding Present was born in 1985 with the release of the debut single GO OUT AND GET EM BOY! The bands first album, GEORGE BEST, followed a couple of years later. With the early releases on their own label, the band acquired a reputation for bittersweet, breathtakingly honest love songs immersed in whirlwind guitars, so it was quite extraordinary that they decided to explore traditional Eastern European folk music for their major label debut on RCA in 1989. [UKRAINSKI VISTUPI V JOHNA PEELA] However, this was soon to be followed by the more traditionally incendiary BIZARRO, which featured their first hit single KENNEDY.

The bands next step was to enlist noise-mongering [and, at that point, relatively unknown] sound engineer Steve Albinis aid. The resulting SEAMONSTERS, recorded in the snowy wilds of Minnesota in just 11 days, suggested a more thoughtful Wedding Present.

A unique plan was hatched in 1992. By the end of December of that year, The Wedding Present had released twelve 7 singles, one per month and equalled Elvis Presley's 35-year-old record for "most hits in one year". A gang of impressive names, including Ian Broudie [The Lightning Seeds] and legendary Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller collaborated on the industry-challenging project, ultimately to be compiled on the two HIT PARADE LPs.

1994s WATUSI, produced by Steve Fisk (a prime mover in the celebrated avant-garde scene of Seattle) whisked the band off into another new area with its lo-fi pop, three-part a capella harmonies and Waikiki-ready surf strains. The band returned to a more familiar sound in 1995 with the car themed MINI, in which Gedge cloaked his tales of love and lust with automobile symbolism.

The self-produced Top 40 album SATURNALIA was released in 1996 by Cooking Vinyl to a flurry of critical approval, but it was at this point that Gedge started work on his solo project, CINERAMA. A fittingly titled outfit, Cinerama indulged Gedge's love of film music from John Barry to Blaxploitation via Ennio Morricone.

Surely on pace to rival the abundant shelf filling of The Wedding Present, Cinerama released a clutch of singles in support of their 1998 debut LP, VA VA VOOM, as well as a number prior to 2000's Steve Albini-recorded DISCO VOLANTE. The third Cinerama studio album, TORINO (released in 2002), was much darker than the first two, with Gedge returning to a guitar driven sound and deciding to write predominantly about infidelity.

At the end of 2002, Gedge and Murrell unexpectedly split up, and he decided to leave Leeds, his home for the preceding twenty-four years, and move to Seattle in the USA. Following the end of this fourteen-year relationship, Gedge began writing a collection of songs apparently influenced by his despair over the split. TAKE FOUNTAIN, the resultant album, was recorded in Chicago and Seattle by Steve Fisk [who also produced WATUSI, The Wedding Present’s 1994 LP] and released, perhaps ironically, on St. Valentine’s Day 2005. This saw Gedge reviving The Wedding Present name for the first album since 1996’s SATURNALIA to a torrent of critical acclaim. TAKE FOUNTAIN “is as eloquent an emotional discourse as he has mustered. Gedge has never before assimilated harsh rock textures to orchestral arrangements with such power.” [Mojo]. “Gedge hasn’t sounded this belligerently broken-hearted since 1987’s MY FAVOURITE DRESS” [Uncut]. “Fans have long since recognised Gedge as more poet than pop star. Like Byron without the marsh fever, TAKE FOUNTAIN confirms his status as an extraordinary songwriter” [The Times].

In the wake of TAKE FOUNTAIN’s release, and after almost an eight-year hiatus, The Wedding Present set out on a mammoth twenty month concert tour of Europe and North America which included most of the major festivals and ended in November 2006. In December of that year Gedge relocated to Hollywood, California, where he is currently living and writing and making plans for a George Best “Twentieth Anniversary” Tour of Europe. During this next tour, which will take place in October and November 2007, the George Best album will be played in its entirety, as part of the set.

The Hoosiers

The Hoosiers
The Hoosiers are three men, but they were not always three. Before they found the third member they were a two-piece, and before that they were two one pieces. "The math's is quite simple," proclaimed Irwin Sparkes, the outrageously named leader of the rabble, "It's not rocket surgery".

And it was not 'rocket surgery', it was music; and what The Hoosiers have created is a shiny great dollop of what the band like to call Odd-Pop. And it was not a lie for it was odd and it was pop. "We would never be satisfied playing another song about drinking on a Saturday night," Martin Skarendahl, the queerly-titled bassist, pipes up. "And at this stage in our writing we didn't feel like subjecting the world to another love song," interjects Irwin, who as ever, has more to say than anyone. "I don't have just one genre of music in my tape collection" says Alfonso Sharland (what the deuce happened to all the Dave Smiths out there!?) who tragically, or beautifully (if you're in that minority), resembles the mutant love child of Dave Grohl and Mick Hucknall. I didn't grow up just wanting to be The Cure, Jeff Buckley, The Flaming Lips or XTC". All acts The Hoosiers cite as influences.

"We didn't always feel like just playing 'brit-pop' or whatever. This was a huge problem for us in terms of finding our sound. When we met Martin we all agreed that we wanted to cover a lot of space with our songs, not just keep it 4/4, foot to the floor, because that's not how we feel all the time".

Of Montreal

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £12.50

Their songs soar and weave with energy and goodwill, daring anyone who hears them to walk away without a smile on their face. Listening to Of Montreal, you might think that singer Kevin Barnes is missing the angst gene. But the longer you listen, the more you start to realize that maybe missing the angst gene is a blessing. It allows Kevin to explore more fully his crazily creative ideas and to make wondrous music, drawing on influences from the Byrds or even the Mamas And The Papas; the group's songs are all sweet pop ditties, as suitable for campfire-singing as stage performance.

THE BAYS 7pm - 2am, last entry midnight.
Forget every rule you’ve ever been taught about live music. Ignore every outmoded notion of what it is to be a ‘live’ band. Forget even what you think you think ‘live music’ actually means. What drives this band is a need to communicate with their audience in a way not possible with traditional live bands. There are no ‘songs’ as such to perform, there’s no album to promote, there are no commercial imperatives at play. The Bays only perform live, they never rehearse, they don’t have a set-list and they couldn’t ever do the same performance twice. It’s all about the moment – an experience or an event that exists between the band and the audience for one time only. The Bays have no intention of releasing any material in the immediate future, but even if you could capture the performance in digital format, it would only represent a fraction of the total Bays experience. Because what they do that is so unique, so unprecedented, is that they enter into a creative partnership with the crowd, receiving feedback from the dance floor and reinterpreting that response, rewiring the vibe and taking it to a new level. Each of The Bays is feeling a progression in the music and is anticipating where the performance is going to next. It could change at any moment and pursue a new direction in a second. Taking the concept of the DJ – presiding over a seamless continuum of music – The Bays drop sets like a live band creating a 90-minute DJ-mix. And reinventing the concept of studio remixing, The Bays are creating new tracks on stage and remixing these ideas live without any planning, verbal communication or commercial consideration. The guys are pushing boundaries with their sound. They are giving their audience something radical, revolutionary even. So much so, that if the hype is to be believed, the 21st century notion of what it means to play live will henceforth be understood in entirely new terms - in terms first defined by The Bays.

AKALA - CANCELLED
The streets gave birth to hip hop, and the streets are where it lives. But the corporate world stole rap. Now Akala’s stealing it back.

‘Garbage’ is how Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley, 22, describes ‘what was once, not that long ago, the most charismatic, enigmatic, energetic, lyrically creative music on the planet’, because it has turned into a reflex idiolect for plastic players with false values and arid imaginations, who know the price of bling but the value of nothing. With his debut album, ‘It’s Not A Rumour’, (released April 10 2006 on Illa State Records), Akala attacks a lazy, retrograde rap scene from all sides, intent on moving it both forward and back into what it was in the first place – a generational voice for change, empowerment and salvation, for himself, his people and for the streets.

True to hip hop’s original template, ‘It's Not A Rumour’ is alternately reflective and anthemic, stone to the bone and rocked-out all the way to one louder. It may move you to insurrection, to tears or just nearer to the centre of the dancefloor. Just as New York crews rapped over AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ way back when, Akala’s album synthesises the raw rock dynamicsm with the lyrical ingenuity of rap with no compromising either – that’s why its appeal extends far beyond the narrow hip hop scene into a far broader music sphere.

Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu (pronounced shoe-shoe) is an experimental indie band originally from and currently based in San Francisco, California, with time often spent in Seattle, Washington. The band is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who has been its only constant member since its inception. His current bandmates are cousin, Caralee McElroy, percussionist Ches Smith, and bassist Devin Hoff. Xiu Xiu are also, on occasion, joined by Cory McCulloch, who has also produced several of their albums. Past members include Lauren Andrews, Yvonne Chen, Sam Mickens and Jherek Bischoff. Some, including McCulloch, have played in previous bands with Stewart, notably Ten in the Swear Jar and IBOPA. The band's name is taken from the 1998 Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl.[2]

Xiu Xiu's music draws heavily from several disparate genres including punk, noise rock, ambient noise, modern classical, and folk. The majority of lyrics deal with morose topics such as suicide, AIDS, war, and taboo experiences. Musically, the band will often blend cacophonous percussion with lush hooks and diverging lyrical styles, influenced by bands of the UK post-punk scene such as The Cure and Joy Division.

Salford’s Ting Tings, comprising singer Katie White and drummer Jules De Martino. If last year’s limited release ‘Fruit Machine’ saw them set out their stall as a sardonic LCD Soundsystem, ‘Great DJ’ stakes an almighty claim to be the year’s first lo-fi dancefloor smash.

The elements are all there. Scratchy, Peaches-esque guitar riff? Check. Chorus you’d still be humming after a week in Glasgow with Gallows? Check. Mischievous sense of pop as sonic thrift shop? Check! At its beating heart, peroxide philosopher Katie: "Folks got high at quarter to five/Don’t you feel you’re growing up undone?" she intones cryptically, before gabbling something about "The local DJ" having "some songs to play".

THE YOUNG GODS
‘Super Ready/Fragementé’
(PIAS)

Messrs Treichler, Comet and Trontin have never been ones to rest on their laurels and ‘Super Ready’ marks another sea change in their long and fruitful career. Finely honed over a couple of years of live performances, with songs bolted firmly into place by legendary producer and longtime collaborator Roli Mosimann, it signals a triumphant return to their rock roots. The adrenaline fuelled machine-tooled punk of ‘I Am The Drug’ and ‘Freeze’ share the clanging metal riff and glorious fuck-you attitude of ‘Envoye’ while the joyous, euphoric ‘Everyhere’, propelled by some amazingly fluid drumming from Trontin just might be the greatest ‘had a bad day dear?’ antidote known to man. Franz Treichler has never been on better vocal form, moving effortlessly from sensuous croon to seismic roar although on the curious ‘Machine Arriere’ he sounds more like Oscar the Grouch having a breakdown. The affecting ‘Stay With Me’ continues their longstanding fascination with late Sixties psychedelia while the title track, already a live favourite, dissolves beautifully into lysergic guitar fuzz, trampling over the burning embers of a Stooges riff. The sound of master craftsmen completely at ease and enjoying themselves immensely, these Gods might not be young anymore but their talents are ageless.

LIVI

Livi is a Latvian hard rock band, that was very influential in forming the Latvian rock music culture. Their signatures are very poetic lyrics and trademark guitar solos.

The band debuted in 1976, when it was founded in Liepaja by Eriks Kigelis and Juris Pavitols. They started out as a pop-rock band and played in various gigs around Latvia, whilst trying to find their own specific style. Thus the period of 1977-1985 was largely a chaotic time in group’s music – it varied from pretty pop to heavy rock. But one thing never changed – their anti-soviet propaganda, their patriotism and their monumentalism.

After the tragic death of Livi leader Eriks Kigelis in 1986, Ainars Virga joined the band, thus starting a new era – the era of anthemic ballads, hard hitting heavy rock tunes and rebellious philosophy. Virga turned out to be a worthy successor to Kigelis by composing some of the best-known Latvian hard rock songs. Since the beginning, Livi have recorded a total of 9 albums and are still rocking’ to this day.

The band’s trademark songs include “Dzimta valoda”, “Dzelsgriezejs”, “Meitene zeltene”, “Saldus saule”, “Piedod man”, “Zilite” and “Tikai tev un man” and “Pari visam”.

The single “Bastards” was released earlier this year in Sweden. It sold gold and was on top on all the charts. Due to this success, the song did not make it on the album. That says a lot about how strong the twelve new songs on the album are. A tour in Europe, Japan and South America is already set up. Hardcore Superstar once again proves that their new album brilliantly combines brick hard force with a melodic sound - that they are the world’s foremost band in this genre!

Imperial Leisure

Imperial Leisure are a phenomenon: a ten-piece band playing their own particular blend of hip-hop, ska and rock music, complete with live brass section, keyboards, DJ, two MCs and a singer, who have been mates since North London secondary school, and in some cases, primary school.  Their music is a killer combination of great beats, great tunes and irresistibly memorable lyrics.

Influences come from all over the place: as well as a group admiration of great British bands such as The Specials, Madness and The Prodigy, there is a Motown-inspired soulfulness to singer Jel’s vocals, and a rock sensibility to MC Denis’s delivery.

The sense of unity and familiarity that comes from 15 years of friendship and hanging out together is very much evident both in the band’s sound and in the relationships between members.  Based in their own rehearsal/recording studio in Wood Green, they work together and party together, and put equal energy into both things.

Smith look-a-like Tom Clarke provided all the swagger and sneer that anyone could possibly expect from someone who has to sing and play guitar at the same time. Initially, the main motivation for the band was simply boredom in its many forms. “There’s nothing to do,” states Tom bluntly. “Although I did most of my growing up in Birmingham, it’s still very similar to Coventry when it comes to being bored. You’re either down the pub or you’re not so starting a band represented doing something a bit different to everyone else we know.” What started out as an exercise in keeping yourselves occupied soon developed into something more serious as the band realized that a) what they were doing was really, really good and b) they preferred it more to their day jobs by a distance of several light years.

Asobi Seksu

Asobi Seksu presents its new album, Citrus: eleven slices of guitar-swirling, sweet-and-sour, bilingual dream pop. Frontwoman Yuki’s voice is more assured than ever, swinging from a girlish falsetto to plaintive laments and switching effortlessly between Japanese and English lyrics, all the while anchored by the lush, turbulent guitar of James Hanna. This is the sound of a band coming into its own, and having fun doing it.

Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for “playful sex”) released its debut album in 2004 to significant critical acclaim, winning rave reviews from the New York Times, Nylon, Under the Radar, YRB, and XLR8R, among others; scoring a #1 video on mtvU’s Dean’s List with the song “Walk on the Moon;” garnering a top ten spot on CMJ’s radio charts; and becoming an instant favorite in the NYC scene, playing packed shows at the Bowery, Knitting Factory, and Mercury Lounge.

Asobi Seksu have always been masters at creating musical textures; gauzy, cloudy dreamscapes for their slower songs and squalls of guitar and daisy-chained effect pedals for their barnstormers. What truly distinguishes Citrus, though, is that the band has now married this ability to a finely honed pop sensibility. The songs here aren’t just “pretty,” they’re melodically rich and incredibly catchy. As their captivating live show attests, Asobi Seksu have outgrown the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and Lush, and have finally realized their potential as one of New York’s greatest bands. True to its name, Citrus is every bit as sweet and delicious as it sounds.

No-one can remember exactly how it happened but lets just presume it went something like… 'Lets start a band' 'OK' …ignoring the fact that neither Ross or future guitarist Faley had only ever touched their instruments once at this point. (Ross had a knock-about on Sam's drums one evening, Faley skipped school to get stoned in Sam's attic and make a song 'Wasted Intellectuals'... probably LOTP's first song).

LOTP found a home in Way Out West and it's all-ages gigs, their feelings reciprocated by the new generation. Stuck mid-way between an older generation of somewhat static crowds and a younger generation of hyper-active kids, LOTP gained a dedicated following in the younger generations through myspace.com and for the energy of their live shows and in the older generations for the music itself. The Klaxons/NME had just coined the phrase 'Nu-Rave' and Late Of The Pier's ideas of live music began to become popular with the mainstream. With this came more interest from the music industry… NME and Radio1 quickly picked up on the band, noting them as one of the bands to watch out for in 2007 and music industry king-pins and affiliates soon became regular attendees to London gigs, often for pleasure instead of business.

Behemoth
BEHEMOTH have always pushed the limits of their abilities and defied the boundaries of death and black metal. Now, the Polish metal kings have returned with a new offering, The Apostasy, which is destined to become both the defining release of the band’s career and one of the most revered and dynamic offerings the genre has seen in years. The Apostasy’s basic meaning is “to go against religion,” and with Poland being one of the top religious countries in the world, BEHEMOTH strives to convey that being religious is not the key to happiness. This album takes everything to the next level, as Nergal (guitars, vocals) promises “more speed, aggression and blasphemy than ever before.” The Apostasy is easily the group’s most ambitious and epic offering yet and was recorded in the band's hometown of Gdansk with Nergal and longtime sound engineer Malta in the producers' chairs. The effort was once again mixed with the acclaimed Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, SYL) at Dugout Studios in Sweden and will be mastered by Bjorn Engelmann (Rammstein).

BEHEMOTH built their career upon their unrelenting touring schedule, performing over 325 shows worldwide in support of their 2005 release, Demigod. The group kicks off The Apostasy’s worldwide touring cycle on Ozzfest 2007 as direct support to second-stage headliners Hatebreed. This event marks BEHEMOTH’s biggest U.S. tour yet, further setting the stage for the band to become the new leaders of the genre.

High On Fire

With a heavy-handed approach and a sound that crashes like thunder, HIGH ON FIRE has put the power back in 'power-trio.' Less a band than a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness, the band has burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype.

HIGH ON FIRE was formed by guitarist Matt Pike in late summer 1998; a scant six months after the breakup of his previous band, the enigmatic stoner-metal legend SLEEP. Formed out of the need to simply play guitar again, Pike jammed with settled on a line-up of powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime guitarist friend George Rice, who made the switch to bass to round out the trio.

HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With their latest release, "Blessed Black Wings", guitarist / vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.

Sons and Daughters
In the summer of 2006, Sons And Daughters holed up in a house in the village of Adfern on the west coast of Scotland. They had no television, no telephones, and worked on new songs in a converted barn for eight hours every day. "We wrote and practiced all day and played poker and got drunk at night. We were committed to writing a great pop record," says Adele Bethel. "We all love Blondie and The Smiths and we wanted to embrace that and not repeat what we had done before. Then we thought: who would be the perfect producer for a record like this?"

Domino’s Laurence Bell suggested Bernard Butler, and all being huge Suede fans the band agreed. This Gift bears out that Butler and Sons And Daughters make a winning combination, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time of recording. "He’s very, very tough," says Scott Paterson. "He doesn’t sugar-coat anything and we had a lot of clashes. Then we heard the playbacks of the songs and it all began to make sense." Adds Adele: "At first it was his way or no way. Then Scott got talking to him about Joe Meek and Bert Jansch and we started to click."

The result, despite or perhaps because of the tensions and struggles that came during its recording, is an album on which a unique, inspired band step up onto a whole new level.

Upon switching their name from Xecutioner to Obituary, the career of one of the most successful and influential Death Metal bands began. Hailing from Florida and featuring John Tardy (vocals), brother Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (guitar), Allen West (guitar), and Daniel Tucker (bass), the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut albumthe immense and immeasurably heavy Slowly We Rot (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during 1990s rise of the Death Metal genre. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach; the result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. Like them or not, Obituary was unlike anything anyone had heard before

Yes Yes people! Born 20th June 1982 (same Birthday as Lionel Ritchie and Brian Wilson watch out fellas!) at West London hospital in Hammersmith. At age 2, visited the white cliffs of Dover with parents and my dad nearly (accidentally) dropped me over the edge. Only survived due to a strong grip for a toddler. Same strong grip would later be used to hold microphones and female arses tightly. Attended All Saints Primary School in Fulham High St and was good at Maths, Art and Poetry. Some people took the piss out of my big lips. Who's laughing now you supermarket trolley attendant fuckfaces!? After buying Snoop Doggs Doggystyle album I penned my first rap verse aged 11. I'll slaughter your daughter and knife your wife. My mum looked worried but embraced me still. Attended ADT College, Wandsworth. More peeps took the piss out of my lips (and teeth). Who's laughing now you drug-pushing stolen-Golf GTI-driving wastemen! Wait that aint a bad lifestyle is it. Anyways. Aged 15 entered a rap battle at a house party in Shepherds Bush. Completely destroyed a useless wanker and a fight broke out so I sprinted home. You get me. Year 2000: attended Royal Holloway University Of London to study film directing. Started Garage MCing to make some money. Didn't make much. Banged many trim ladies. Met Rusher. Thought he was a tosser. He thought I was a tosser. Despite this we made a concept album in the Film Departments audio booth. 2001: went to New York City and in an expensive restaurant I shook hands with Stevie Wonder in the mens toilets. Not in a George Michael sorta way. I told him he was very talented. He told me I was gonna be BIG. Graduated. Moved to Australia by myself for a year. Did lots of landscape gardening and work on scaffolding. Met bare idiots with mullets and learnt a lot about myself and BBQs. Grew my hair. Learnt to surf on my last day in the country. Boris
This cult-favorite experimental trio is known to regularly switch musical genres between albums. Drawing from a wide variety of musical styles including psychedelic rock, punk, sludge/doom metal, minimalism, drone and more. Boris takes its name from a song on the Melvins' Bullhead album.
Boris formed during the early '90s and consists of guitarist Wata, bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi, and drummer/vocalist Atsuo. They made their first recorded appearance on an obscure 1994 compilation entitled Take Care of Scabbard Fish, released only in Japan and now out of print. Absolutego, their full-length debut, came out in 1996 on the band's own Fangs Anal Satan imprint but was unavailable in the U.S. for years, a situation that was remedied when the Los Angeles-based Southern Lord label reissued the album in early 2001 along with a bonus track and new packaging. Their next album, Amplifier Worship, came out on the Mangrove label in 1998 and was also unavailable in the U.S. for several years; San Francisco's Man's Ruin had planned to reissue it in the fall of 2001, but the label folded before that could happen. 1998 also saw the release of the Boris/Keiji Haino collaboration, a live disc entitled Black: Implication Flooding, which came out on Japan's Inoxia Records. In 1999, Boris issued a split CD with fellow Japanese band Choukoko No Niwa, More Echoes, Touching Air Landscape, which also came out on Inoxia and featured Boris weighing in with a brief (for them) 28-minute contribution. Their third full-length album, Flood, was released two years later on the MIDI Creative label.

The Dirtbombs

Doors - 7:30 PM

The Dirtbombs crash back into the UK and blow up at the ULU in London on Thursday 5th June to celebrate the release of their brilliant new record-"We Have You Surrounded".  This will be the first Dirtbombs show in the UK  for a couple of years and "We Have You Surrounded " is the first full-length album of new material since 2003's pivotal Dangerous Magical Noise.

The Dirtbombs are the brain child of Mick Collins, godfather of the Detroit garage punk movement. After writing the template of modern US garage with The Gories (who were a major formative influence on The  White Stripes among many others) Mick wanted to form a band that reflected not only punk but the black music scene too, specifically soul. Whereas  The Gories were a bassless band, The Dirtbombs not only have TWO bass players but also TWO drummers!

The Dirtbombs are an absolutely unmissable live event.

Tapes N Tapes
In the winter of 2003, times were as hard as the frozen earth. three men, tapes, 'n, and tapes banded together to salvage what they could from the tundric wasteland.

The resulting collective came to be known as "tapes 'n tapes". By altering hit records ever so slightly, and plagerizing great works of german and norwegian literature, the collective developed a sound wholly their own... in the spring of 2003 the band migrated north, to the taconite fields of the iron range. There, buried deep in a mine shaft, they spent long nights perfecting their craft. finally, as the northern chill of fall began to once again sweep over lake superior, the brothers tapes returned south.

Today they are presenting their beautifully wrapped, sweet smelling product to the hipsters, college rockers, and b-boys of the world.

RAGGA PUNK METAL! With elements of Metal, Dancehall, Punk and Drum & Bass, all swirling into a concoction of lethal addictiveness. This band make metal-heads, punks and dread-heads rock-out to the same songs; this is the true meaning of unity in sound.

The opportunity to share the stage with bands such as Korn, Sevendust, Nonpoint, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Voodoo Glow Skulls, POD, Soulfly - to name but a few - has allowed Skindred to build a rapidly growing international fan base.

With songs like Nobody, Set It Off, Pressure and Selector this band is so far apart from the pack that any attempt to describe or categorize them is an exercise in futility. If Barrington Levy were to meet Pantera, or Bounty Killa meet The Police, or Sublime meet System Of A Down, you'd find the sonic landscape Skindred call home.

You'll have to look far and wide to find a band that encapsulates so many diverse styles, and unites different schools and cultures of music under one roof. In a desperate time where music fans are tired of the medio-core, starved for something new and striking, Skindred are the force that could sweep all generic adversaries aside.

Idlewild

Idlewild are a Scottish rock band formed in December 1995, by Roddy Woomble (vocals), Rod Jones (guitar), Phil Scanlon (bass), and Colin Newton (drums).

Initially their sound obeyed the conventions of 1990s British indie-punk guitar music, but unlike many of their contemporaries, it developed over time, from an edgy and angular sound approaching post-hardcore, as heard in their early material (once described by the NME as "the sound of a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs"), to a different, sweeping, melodic rock sound as displayed on their third album The Remote Part. Idlewild's sound cannot be easily placed into a specific genre, though they have clearly been influenced by bands like Blur, Nirvana, Gang Of Four, R.E.M., The Smiths and Fugazi.

Part of Idlewild's early success can be attributed to their singles gaining heavy rotation on Steve Lamacq's Evening Session on BBC Radio 1, as well as his all-round endorsement of them - the diminutive DJ often cites them as one of his favourite bands.

The Cartel quintet all grew up in Conyers, Georgia, about 20 miles east of Atlanta, where they live now. "We've known each other forever, but we've been playing together since 2000," Pugh says. After years of making demos and playing any hole-in-the-wall that would have them, the band self-released the Ransom EP in March 2004. A deal with the Militia Group followed and full-length debut CHROMA was issued in 2005. The buzz surrounding the album led to a contract with Epic, who re-released CHROMA last summer.
Pugh is philosophical about Cartel's past, present and future. "It's the same feeling parents have when their kid grows up and graduates," he says. "It's like wow, this idea that we put down a few years ago has finally come to fruition. We couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished while at the same time looking toward the future." So what do you do when your dreams come true? "Easy," muses Pugh, "You invent new ones. For us, this is just the beginning."

Melt-Banana

Japanese noise rock band Melt Banana found more success in the U.S. and the U.K. than in their own country, gaining a small but dedicated fan base among American and European punk rock fans. Although their music sounds noticeably different from any sort of traditional punk, it contains some punk elements: shrieking vocals, overdriven guitars, and one-and-a-half-minute songs. Melt Banana's unique style, however, comes as a result of the distinctly piercing vocals of lead singer Yasuko O. As well as the frenzied, effect-charged playing of guitarist  Agata Searing, intense, and mind-blowingly fast are perhaps the first adjectives that come to mind when listening to Melt Banana's music. Try to imagine an even more energetic incarnation of the Boredoms.

But, for many, the appeal of Melt Banana is not entirely limited to their music. Yasuko O's lyrics and song titles reflect a Japanese pop culture that is fascinating and strange, yet attractive to many non-Japanese fans. As time passes, their overshadowing influence is becoming more and more evident within the cultish following of the noise-core movement. However, it is the band's incredible severity and furious sound that has gained them the most recognition. Their shockingly intense live shows are that of sheer legend, with many fans leaving sweaty and exhausted, and Yasuko O often persevering through nosebleeds.

The Dickies

The Dickies
The Dickies were the clown princes of punk, not to mention surprisingly longstanding veterans of the L.A. scene. In fact, by the new millennium, they'd become the oldest surviving punk band still recording new material. In contrast to the snotty, intentionally offensive humor of many comedically inclined punk bands, the Dickies were winningly goofy, inspired mostly by trashy movies and other pop culture camp. Their covers were just as ridiculous as their originals, transforming arena rock anthems and bubblegum pop chestnuts alike into the loud, speed-blur punk-pop — basically the Ramones crossed with L.A. hardcore — that was their musical stock in trade. As the band got older, their music slowed down little by little, but their sound and their sense of humor stayed largely the same, and they were an avowed influence on new-school punkers like Green Day and the Offspring.

Despite this illustrious psych-rock lineup, however, Red Sparowes sound owes more to the melodic guitar- surrealism of the mid-80s Blast First and Too Pure ilk than the bands for which their members are known. "At the Soundless Dawn", an album of seven compositions with titles that fit together as a complete paragraph, opens with a rapidly strummed single high-string, building tension as distant, delay- drenched notes saturate an almost dance-beat drum pattern. From this, the landscape is transformed as pedal-steel adds a further layer of glissando urgency, and when the second track abruptly kicks in the tense, eerie mass is reminiscent of Italian horror soundtrack masters Goblin. Icy, piercing guitars jut out while rapid bass arpeggios circle ominously ever nearer. Later in the record, walls of blissful melodic noise recall My Bloody Valentines masterpiece "Loveless"; transitions glide and smudge into a warm wash of tone, producing an orchestral mass as entrancing as it is unnerving. This stunning debut, recorded in San Francisco by engineer Desmond Shea (Neurosis) was a declaration of intent from a band already looking to alter the accepted orthodoxy of heavy music. With the release of their second album "Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun" in September 2006, Red Sparowes present a darker and more focused record than "Soundless Dawn". Recorded and mixed by Tim Green (Fucking Champs, Melvins), the album pursues the psychedelic wall of sound ethic to ever-more extreme ends, a stormy haze of droning intensity and lush feedback that is closer to Isis and Neurosis than the previous record while still retaining

The Dodos

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £9.00

No longer does “to go the way of the dodo” denote becoming an obsolete thing of the past. Instead, Meric Long—chief songwriter and guitarist of San Francisco-based duo the Dodos—gives the phrase a fresh new meaning, playing ephemeral psych-folk-pop music. Long’s fleeting, intricate and finely-tuned finger-picking is warm and focused, resonating under his refined lyrical hopscotch and drummer Logan Kroeber’s foot-stomping tom and-tambourine back beat. Last December, the band self-released its sensational full-length, Beware of the Maniacs, which it took on the road this year with Jennifer Gentle and Akron/Family. It’s only a matter of time before the Dodos really get the attention they truly deserve. And it won’t be because they’re extinct."

RESCHEDULED DATE FROM 24 JUNE - ORIGINAL TICKETS STILL VALID
Hello – We ARE the Infadels and for the many who seem confused or in need of enlightenment, this is what we are all about…

Five young(ish) men from east London - but hey, don't let that put you off.

Founded out of the frustration of previous failed musical ventures, a love of 90's dance music (although crucially NOT the Shamen) and rock n' roll bands like The Stooges, The Stones and The Scream, we decided it was time to kill hum-glum wafer thin indie music and create a racket all of our own. Far too many people play it far too cool these days, don't ya think?

Time to turn those frowns upside down, uh-huh yeah. So, knowing that the music industry is terminally screwed we started releasing records ourselves, starting with “Leave Your Body” on our own Dead At Thirty imprint. One more 12” and several shambolic shows later we run out of money and shut up shop. Then Wall of Sound came a knocking waving contracts (but rest assured, not ca$h) and we thought we'd give it a serious blast. We lied to WOS, telling them we had a finished album ready for release and they seemed to go for it. We managed to hold them off for about six months but they finally saw through our cunning ruse. In comes Jagz Kooner to make sure we finish the job and after much blood sweat and tears we get there! “We Are Not The Infadels” came out in January this year and we've been touring it ever since. Happy days.

Misinterpreted by some but loved by many, we continue the job of doing our insane shows and writing the best songs we can. Hard work makes the world go round after all.

Still, many seem think we are loutish, lager boys who are screaming, shouting and vomiting our way round the UK and Europe . We'll have you know that this is an unfounded lie…apart from the vomiting.

So there you are.

So what exactly is Tokyo Police Club? Perhaps EYE Weekly summed it up best when they wrote "[Tokyo Police Club] are undeniably catchy and raw, marrying danceable hooks with talk of robot masters and global emergencies, providing an upbeat soundtrack to our troubled times." Somehow, the deeply innocuous subdivisions of Newmarket, Ontario have hatched a four-headed beast of tunefulness.

The Mountain Goats

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £13.50

The Mountain Goats' first recordings were covers of songs by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. These recordings were made in employee housing at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California - the same town which, perhaps not coincidentally, gave Metallica to the world. A tape of these early sessions, which used the roaring static sound of late-night TV test patterns as percussion/incidental noise but were otherwise a capella, still exists. The inscription on the spine of the tape reads THE MOUNTAIN GOATS/BLEATING WILDLY: A VERSION OF FRANKIE VALLI AND THE FOUR SEASONS. No-one will ever hear this tape in any form.

Throughout the early 90s, the Mountain Goats developed their style. What this means is "John started learning how to write songs." There were two albums and a limited amount of touring done by the lineup that solidified during this time - John and Rachel played twice in San Francisco, twice in Chicago, twice in New York City, and once each in Columbus, Newpaltz, Cambridge, Providence, Northampton, Nijmegen, Koln, Utrecht, Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. There were about a dozen shows in southern California, too. Around the end of this period, they made an EP called Nine Black Poppies, and then John moved to Chicago.

After making a few albums which were mainly solo endeavors with occasional guests, John called Peter Hughes, who'd joined him on bass for two tours of continental Europe in '95 and '96. "I'm signing to 4AD," he said. "You busy?" Peter was in fact busy, but not that busy. They recorded Tallahassee, toured themselves sick, recorded We Shall All Be Healed, toured some more, made the Sunset Tree, toured like French bicyclists, made Get Lonely in 2006 and then kept right on touring. You know how some people can't stop collecting Precious Moments figurines? John and Peter are kind of like that, except with tours.

Most bios attempt to describe the music made by the band they're profiling, and to compare it favorably to the work of giants in the field. This isn't that kind of bio. The general musical framework within which the Mountain Goats have worked for ten-plus years has been acoustic guitar, bass, and voice. The lyrics are central to the whole enterprise. Many of the songs involve desperate characters who've found themselves in some trouble and want to moan about it a little before taking their lumps. The sexual tension between characters in your average Mountain Goats song could split the atom if the power could be harnessed, but it can't, so forget it. Now you know what we know. Go forth and sin no more.

Regurgitator

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £15.00

REGURGITATOR Come with us now on a journey through time and space... and the power of the fusion lick.
REGURGITATOR is currently Quan Yeomans, Ben Ely, Peter Kostic with Seja Vogel ..boards.
Low fat version… Formed in March 94... Ben, Quan & Martin Lee started a band around the other bands they had at the time – Pangaea, Zooerastia, Brazilia respectively – Regurgitator was an appropriate moniker to describe the assembled mass of styles, sounds & attitudes, fueled as much by their ironic & geek nature as their irreverent take on themselves, corporate culture and human social behaviour. From their early guest spots with Primus, Beck, The Buzzcocks, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Ministry, Pansy Division, TISM they quickly developed a strong following that led to signing a deal with the Warner corporation. The first self-titled EP was released in late 1994... quickly followed by the second EP New in 1995. Late 1995 they embarked on a European tour with Filter, followed by their first shows in Tokyo. After their first Big Day Out tour in Jan 1996, they relocated to Bangkok to record their debut album with Magoo. Fast forward to June 2002 they performed in London at the Fierce Festival to 20,000 people, along with Midnight Oil, Spiderbait etc. After ending their deal with Warner by releasing the JINGLES compilation in Oct 2002, a short Australian tour – Nein, Nein, Nein...the Slumber of the Beast led to a DIY DVD release of live tunes from this tour as their first independent release through Valve. In 2003 while Quan was based in Switzerland, Sweden and London, a UK tour and release of Jingles (independent label Kennel) took place. Following a second tour to the UK in early October, they performed at one of the first alternative music festivals in Hong Kong… the Rockit festival along with the 17 piece Spanish Harlem Orchestra from New York, Electric Eel Shock and Ride… This was when plans were hatched for the Band in a Bubble concept to take place in conjunction with the independently released fifth album MISHMASH! An idea suggested by their manager in 1999 and making sense when Quan witnessed david Blaine suspended above the Thames.
After various festival appearance including a very torrid night at the Sydney festival with Peaches and Spod, and a headline spot on the St Kilda Festival in Melbourne, and the Bong in my Eye tour with Spod and The Grates … the Band in a Bubble was born in Melbourne’s Federation Square August 2004. Regurgitator has a long history of trying hard to buck the system that feeds them but as of August 31, they gave themselves over to the system, exposing themselves to the machinations of the "culture industry". In partnership with Channel [V], Regurgitator sealed themselves in a transparent, "fishbowl" studio to record their next album and show the world how the creative process is ultimately both destructive and hypnotic, liberatory and constraining, beautiful and very ugly. By creating a panoptic platform for their public, they gave themselves over to their viewers/fans/citizens and allowed the intrusive eye of the public to pierce their "bubble" like no other band before. After the BAND IN A BUBBLE and the release of the album Mishmash! they escaped to another Australian tour (with guests Wolfmother), a second ROCK IT Festival appearance in Hong Kong, Homebake in Sydney (early Dec) and the 2005 Big Day Out tour. In September 2005 they release their latest EP *?! Featuring Pretty Girls Swear and set out on the Regurgitator Lives tour with friends New Zealand’s brilliant The Mint Chicks, and Snowman (from Perth). They performed at Earthcore in late 2005, where Quan & Ben were joined by Ben & Simon from The Bird, turning our drum & bass versions of their tracks. Feb’06 saw them perform at the Dusty Days Festival in Wagga Wagga and an awesome performance at the Domain for Tropfest2006. Mishmash! came out on Avex in Japan Apr’06. They headlined Come Together, Luna Park in Sydney in June 06 and followed this up with a periodic string of shows over the remainder of the year… Quan produced a fantastic animated video for The Game for the Japanese release.
Band in a Bubble, in conjunction with Valve Records, has recently been licensed to take place in London (now scheduled for early 2008) and in New York (May 24 - June 12 2007). Ben has recently released a solo project with his band JUMP 2 LIGHT SPEED and Quan is currently based in Hong Kong working on solo projects including the debut Ep for his project with Spod entitled BLOX. Regurgitator recently did an extremely fun tour over NSW, VIC and SA prior to Quan’s departure and have started working on new tracks for their next album due to be recorded in Brazil now.

It's a very comfortable world, guitar rock, a world now embraced by Sunday supplements and Mercury awards. All very polite, very well meaning, very college. It's not likely you'll get to see some full on, in your face, rock 'n' roll danger, something a bit loose and chaotic. So thank God for Towers Of London. Already hated by the tut-tutting indie brigade, the band's in your face rawk ugliness and over the top posing strikes terror into the introverted British music scene. The fact that they get all those, "They can't play, what do they think they're wearing?" mum and dad comments means you know they are great already. The band have big time stamped all over them. It's a thrilling, dirty, lascivious, downright nasty exhibition of surly, strutting, in your face rock n roll attitude, and it's backed up with stomping slices of glam punk action.

Deerhoof

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £12.50

By turns cuddly and chaotic, San Francisco's Deerhoof mixes noise, sugary melodies, and an experimental spirit into sweetly challenging and utterly distinctive music. The group began as the brainchild of guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer/keyboardist Greg Saunier in 1994; early releases, such as 1995's 7"s Return of the Woods M'Lady and For Those of Us on Foot, had a more traditionally harsh, no wave-inspired sound, though they also included the quirky tendencies that dominated their later efforts. Vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki joined the group in time for 1996's self-titled double 7" on Menlo Park, but other members passed through Deerhoof, including Chris Cooper of Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase. The following year they released their full-length debut, The Man, The King, The Girl, on Kill Rock Stars and the Come See the Duck 7" on Banano a year later. Fisk left Deerhoof after 1999's Holdy Paws, an experiment that saw the band trying to write songs that favored composition over individual sounds, and pursued similar ideas in his solo work and in Badgerlore. Halfbird, which was recorded before Fisk departed, was released in 2001, after John Dieterich was recruited as Deerhoof's new guitarist. That year the group also released the My Pal Foot Foot 7", a cover of the legendary Shaggs song, that also appeared on the Better Than the Beatles tribute. In 2002, the group released the critically acclaimed Reveille; 2003's Apple O' followed soon after, and also featured auxiliary guitarist Chris Cohen. Their fifth album, the much more cohesive and focused Milk Man, appeared in spring 2004. 2005 was another busy year for the band: Not only did they embark on tours of the U.S., Europe and Japan, they released the Green Cosmos EP, the full-length Runners Four and a Deerhoof tribute album that was only available on the band's website.

After taking 2001 by the balls with their first record Finelines, a preposterously well crafted mix of MBV textures, Sonic Youth dynamics and Cure esque melodies they simply put other band to shame. From the opening electrical storm of Alpha Waves through smash hit single Always Your Way, the sublime genius of Tongue Tied to the distorted-out drums of album finale Under The Wheels it was clear that this band was something special. Bring on the touring! Three years of extensive headline shows and festival appearances as far a field as Japan and Australia meant that Som Wardner and co had cemented there place as an internationally acclaimed force to be reckoned with, as well as impressing fellow musicians such as Chino Moreno of the Deftones, amongst others.

Since Aristotle, man has organized his knowledge vertically in separate and unrelated groups---Science, Religion, Sex, Relaxation, Work, etc. The main emphasis in his language, his system of storing knowledge, has been on the identification of objects rather than on the relationships between objects. He is now forced to use his tools or reasoning separately and for one situation at a time. Had man been able to see past this hypnotic way of thinking, to distrust it (as did Einstein), and to resystematize his knowledge so that it would all be related horizontally, he would now enjoy the perfect sanity which comes from being able to deal with his life in its entirety.

It is possible for Man to alter his mental state and thus alter his point of view (that is, his own basic relation with the outside world which determines how he stores his information). He then can restructure his thinking and change his language so that his thoughts bear more relation to his life and his problems, therefore approaching them more sanely.

It is this quest for pure sanity that forms the basis of The Black Angels.

Far, as with many other bands, was formed with the breaking up and formations of other groups. To start at the top, in 1991 there was a hardcore band from Sacramento, CA named Inner Strength, and Shaun Lopez was the guitarist. Inner Strength broke up in 1991, and Shaun left to join his highschool bud Chris Robyn (drummer) to do more music. They soon found a bassist named Malcolm Keefe; and then found Jonah Matranga (singer) to form Far. Jonah was still in college at Boston when he decided to join the band. So, during the summer of 1991, Jonah left Boston and went to Sacremento. In 1993, the original bassist left, and John Gutenberger entered as the new bassist.

Emma-Lee Moss, known by her stage name of Emmy the Great, is a London based singer-songwriter.

"It's been a while since Next Big Thing Tips by the NME and DiS but Emmy the Great's debut is a triumph, with a maturity beyond her years, and with a humour no less enjoyable for being subtler."
Drowned In Sound - 9/10

"Emmy The Great kicked off her UK tour last night (January 31) with a dedication to Elton John.
Playing with a four-piece backing band, the singer/songwriter performed a stirring 50-minute set, which featured fan favourites 'First Love', 'Gabriel' and 'The Hypnotist's Son'. Set closer 'Two Steps Forward', meanwhile, was dedicated to the Rocket Man. The singer/songwriter, whose debut album 'First Love' is released next week (February 9), was in a cheerful mood, talking at length to the packed crowd between songs and dedicating several songs to friends who were present at the gig."

Doors - 7:00 PM

No one could have missed the total success with the latest album. Top reviews in every country it was released in. Hardcore Superstar are now back with the new album “Dreamin’ in a casket”.

*MOVED TO BORDERLINE*TICKETS STILL VALID*

Negrita began their musical career in 1992 in the provincial town of Arezzo (Tuscany)… and they soon start building their profile as a unique live rock band. Their debut album released in 1994 “NEGRITA” immediately revealed the essence of the band: irresistible guitar riffs, “stainless” rhythm section, powerful bass grooves and incisive vocal lines delivering relevant messages to the audience. In 1996, the band moved to the  U.S. to make XXX, which was followed by 1999's Reset, from which the single "Hollywood" was nominated in the European MTV Music Awards (the first nomination of three).

Keeping their unmistakable  style, they express themselves in many genres: from the authentic blues vein of “XXX”, to the hard rythms and electronic sounds of “RESET” to the new rock/funk/blues vibrations of “RADIO ZOMBIE” and the multi-cultural sound and lyrics of “L’UOMO SOGNA DI VOLARE” (2005). Negrita’s latest album  “HELLdorado” (Oct 08), is a new conceptual journey through the contradictions of the contemporary world: a 360° exploration of sounds and lyrics (in Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese), whereby Africa, LatinoAmerica, Jamaica and Spain are the grid references for the wide musical  universe of the band in recent last years.

Seven guys, seven different musical backgrounds, seven different personalities, one band, one unique and unmistakable voice. Formed four years ago in New Jersey as an ad hoc group intended to put out one album and disappear, one thing lead to another and within a few months of their debut release, Everything Goes Numb, Streetlight Manifesto were officially a full time touring band, traveling the world, spreading their infectious and energetic tunes to all who would listen. One part rock, one part ska, with influences from latin, klezmer, folk, world, funk, jazz and classical thrown in, the band redefined what most people expected from a "ska" band. Three albums later, and after countless worldwide tours, the guys are still at it, still performing live to sold out shows filled with sweat drenched fans, all dancing and singing along at the top of their lungs. And the Streetlight boys wouldn't have it any other way.

This event has been rescheduled from Thursday 5 March. All original tickets remain valid.

A band that need no introduction; The Bluetones have been releasing records since 1995. One of their first reviews in Q Magazine proclaimed, “They are the new Stone Roses”. 10 years on and so many wish that The Roses could have continued to do what The Bluetones do. Which is make music that people still want to hear. The band who gave us Indie anthems like 'Slight Return', and 'If…' are still cutting the finest Indie-pop songs today. From the early days of ‘Expecting To Fly’ to the later days of ‘Luxembourg’, The Bluetones will always make a comeback, but what’s important to them is that when they do, they never fail to impress.

The new 5th studio album is in the shops now. Do get a copy pronto, it's called quite brilliantly: 'The Bluetones'. A second single entitled "Head On A Spike" has recently been released from the afforementioned long-player.

Cobra Starship
As the legend of Cobra Starship would have it, frontman Gabe Saporta fled into the deserts of Arizona one day to find the true meaning of his existence away from his emo-rock band, Midtown. Saporta spent days and nights pondering life, mysterious lights constantly plaguing the nighttime sky above him. One distinct night, the lights became so mesmerizing that Gabe ultimately became catatonic and started levitating into the air. A snake, however, suddenly came out of nowhere, bit his neck, and he awoke to find a talking cobra from the future nursing his wounds. This enigmatic cobra went on to explain the end of the world (no salvation for anyone) and that he was thus sent to find Gabe to disclose his life's purpose -- to ensure that mankind went out in style. And as the cobra revealed, Gabe must complete this "by teaching hipsters to not take themselves so seriously and by telling emo kids to stop being pussies." Hence, Cobra Starship was born...uh, back in New York.

School Of Seven Bells

Doors - 7:00 PM

School Of Seven Bells
Like many bands before them, School of Seven Bells were born as the result of a late-night revelation. Benjamin Curtis connected with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza in 2004 while their bands - Secret Machines and On-Air Library!, respectively - were on tour. While watching PBS at 3am, Alejandra caught a show about the School of Seven Bells: a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ‘80s. The idea of seven minds working as one appealed to her, as did the phrase’s cryptic musicality, and a creative spark ignited.

By the end of 2006, Curtis and the Deheza sisters had completely disappeared into School of Seven Bells. From the outset, it was clear that the trio’s music transcended the usual genre restrictions. School of Seven Bells’ music is full of tensions - Curtis’ gentle guitars wrap around jagged beats; silky vocals hide behind grumpy, alien synthesizers - but the resulting songs are effortlessly cohesive, and insidiously catchy. Elements of dream-pop, Afrobeat, IDM, and 4AD’s gauzier moments provide a constantly shifting frame for the Dehezas’ lyrics, which they write as mysterious missives between the School’s imaginary seven members.

Using cheese graters, wardrobe doors, pianos, harps, brass, strings and an old gramophone to record the twelve-track debut, Adventures in Gramophone is truly a musical spectacular. Duke Special is one of a kind, a unique and talented young Belfast man whose bruised romanticism and soft Northern tinged vocals are at sharp juxtaposition with his wild dreadlocks, smudged eyeliner and unfeasibly wide trousers.

On stage, Duke Special explodes into musical mayhem the battered old trademark gramophone wheezes, huge cymbals clash, egg whisks and cheese graters break free from the kitchen, a stumpf fiddle screeches and the crushed velvet covered piano thumps and tinks in unison but its the very core of the songs, his heartfelt, passionate poems, that will remain in your head long after the lights have gone down.

Shred Yr Face 3 featuring
Originally consisting of Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons, Espers activity centred around their ‘Esperhaus’, a house that has acted as a haven for like-minded artists and performers. The friendships, collaborations and creativity that occurs there has seen Espers multiply in number, with the addition of Otto Hauser (percussion, electronics), Helena Espvall (cello) and Chris Smith (bass, and whatever it takes). Their neo-psychedelic folk has won them a devoted following, drawing influence from chamber rock, aroque pop and late-‘60s British folk. Their album ‘Espers 3’ is released on October 26th through Wichita.

www.myspace.com/espers

The Cave Singers first album ‘Invitation Songs’ was released early 2008 to hearty plays from the likes of Zane Lowe (Radio 1) and a warm flurry of critical acclaim. NME declared it a “post-folk masterpiece of a debut”, a fitting though rather unexpected description for a Seattle act formed from the ashes of three disbanded hardcore/post-punk bands (Quirk from Hint, Hint, Lund from Cobra High and Fudesco from Pretty Girls Makes Graves and before that Murder City High). Perhaps it explains the energy and edge that soars through even their prettiest of folk-laced songs.

Welcome Joy is a gorgeous, rich folky stew hitting musical touchstones from Led Zeppelin III (think Bron Yr Aur Stomp) with a healthy dollop of the more mournful Stevie Nicks’ songs from Fleetwood Mac’s mid-’70s period. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Ladyhawk), the album is far richer and more interesting sounding than their debut. The band performs their dramatic, forlorn and occasionally triumphant music in a wonderfully autumnal haze. ‘Welcome Joy’ is out now via Matador.

VV Brown

+ The Stow + Jay Brown

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £8.50

V V Brown is a singer, a songwriter, a performer, multi-instrumentalist and a producer. In this 24-year-old’s world, love sounds like the perfect melody. Both are difficult to define she says, but both pour out of the songs on her debut album. This is music which sounds like performance: dramatic, charismatic and, frequently, as mad as a box of frogs. This is high definition, high concept pop with scuffed edges and laddered tights. “It’s about letting out all these ideas I’ve had locked up in my mind,” Brown states. “It’s honest - it’s not about being festooned with £10m diamonds or having perfect hair.”

Leading the charge is Crying Blood, written on V V’s one-string guitar, but more of that later, which colourfully illustrates Brown’s penchant for mixing upbeat melodies with lyrics specialising in full-on despair. There are a few of these on her debut album, which is the story of V V’s life but also the story of one specific relationship with one specific arsehole. “He broke my heart just before I began writing the album,” V V says. “In a way writing Crying Blood, was liberating because I was letting everything out and it felt like there was some distance. But the fact that I was still writing songs about him meant that I wasn’t as liberated as I thought”.

As V V now realises, writing these songs brought everything to a close. From the brutal imagery of the song’s title, through “falling like a comet from a broken sky” to the point where she arrives back on earth with a bump, Crying Blood represents a cathartic process which also resulted in a pretty nifty pop tune.

“I can’t remember a time when music was not a part of me,” she says; “when I was five, I remember writing my first song on the piano. I played the same notes over and over again and from that moment I just knew that music would be a huge part of my life.” Evenings were spent in the attic with her five brothers and sisters playing at being in a band and dreaming about being on Top Of The Pops. At school, V V was almost unrecognisable – lunch-breaks would be spent sitting in the school field on her blazer wondering, as she says, “why the grass was green”. Feeling liberated rather than lonely, she immersed herself in her own thoughts. “I’ve always felt slightly on the edge of the circle,” she explains, and this double life, flitting from extrovert to introvert as the mood takes her, now runs through her album. Every Sunday she’d go to church and sing in the gospel choir; at home her mum and dad would listen to Aretha, The Rolling Stones, Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley, Queen and the music from Super Marioland. Anything with a tune was fair game.

It’s easy to see how V V inherited her theatrical, charismatic personality. It’s an excitingly eclectic mix, but V V has another phrase for it: “musical mashed potatoes”.“I was broke!” she howls, so broke in fact that she had to sell her keyboard to pay for her flight home from LA, “but I wasn’t sitting around watching Cash In The Attic – every day was spent making music. Every hour, every day from nine in the morning until two the next morning.” Money was so tight that V V bought a one-string guitar in a charity shop, marked the frets out with her red nail varnish and wrote Crying Blood the very next day. “I’ll wake up in the morning and have no idea what I’m going to write”. It was these sessions threw up the extraordinary songs which scored V V her new deal with Island. Her songs are now instantly addictive and unmistakably honest, with lyrics asking what the bloody point is answered by melodies full of life and reasons to be cheerful. The contradiction works, throwing the listener from happy to sad and back again in the space of three minutes.

“Everything that’s happened in the last few years has taught me to value the idea of knowing yourself and being your-self,” V V says. “And, my God, it took me a long time to get here.” True to this, and as she prepares to unleash the album on the world, V V’s binned off the LA lifestyle, choosing instead to live in London in her auntie’s house with her sisters. “I can’t see myself moving any time soon,” V V says. “Why should I change? I just want a simple life, with extraordinary music in it.”

Acts from all over the world with brutal metal as their common thread.

Armed with a new album on Metal Blade Records, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER require no introduction. Bringing more metal veterans onto the bill is Relapse Record’s OBSCURA. With members playing previously in Necrophagist, Spawn Of Possession and Pestilence their pedigree of death metal is through the roof with technical deathmetal heaviness. CARNIFEX haven’t let their relative newness in the metal scene stop from them from touring relentlessly around the globe in support of their Victory Records debut. Hailing from the UK, these guys dish out slamming deathmetal packed with blastbeats to spare, don’t miss this act whose debut album has earned high praise from all over.

EXCLUSIVE UK SHOW

Laibach and Juno Reactor are among the world's most acclaimed alternative electronic music artists. They have collaborated with each other on several occasions before.

Laibach have never attempted to be an ordinary rock group. The barriers that they have been active in breaking down have often been physical as well as mental and ideological. Rather like super heroes in a comic book, it seems that wherever there is injustice there is also Laibach always attempting to save the day. Saviors of the universe? It could happen yet! laibach.nsk.si <http://www.laibach.nsk.si/>

Laibach is an internationally renowned Slovenian alternative band who developed their distinctive artistic expression in collaboration with the NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst) artistic movement. Laibach's music is a unique mixture of industrial, rock, contemporary classical and electronic music. Using the provocative symbolism and aesthetics related to totalitarian ideologies, the band, founded in 1980, won recognition as a distinctive cultural phenomenon back in the times when Slovenia was still part of the communist Yugoslavia.

Juno Reactor is a musical and performing act known for the cinematic fusion of electronic, orchestral and global music. They are also famous for collaborating with composer Don Davis for the musical score of The Matrix and other films. reactorleak.com <http://www.reactorleak.com/>

The young São Paulo singer Céu captivated the world with her self- titled debut album in 2008. After being chosen as the first interna- tional artist featured in Starbucks’ Hear MusicTM Debut series, Céu earned both Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, countless press accolades, and chart topping numbers.

To celebrate their 7th year anniversary, JungleDrums will host the UK debut of this amazing rising star, with a night including support from the fantastic Zeep and London’s DJ legend, DJ Limão, making for an unprecedented line-up of Brazilian talent that is capturing the imagination of those in the know.

Receiving rave reviews from the top critics, Céu’s headlining this momentous event for the leading Brazilian/Latin Magazine in the UK is an exciting prospect in a young vibrant venue. With a capacity of 800+, it’s going to be the biggest night of the Brazilian calendar in London this year.

The performance is timely for Céu who is due to release her new album, Vagarosa, later in November. Regan's first releases were the single, "Little Miss Drunk", and three EPs titled Hotel Room, Reservior and Campaign Button, which were released on a small indie label, Anvil Records. Following these releases, in 2006, Regan signed to former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde's independent record label, Bella Union, in the UK, resulting in Regan's debut album The End of History being released on August 7, 2006. Following his UK success, Regan was subsequently signed by the American label Lost Highway Records. The End of History was released in the U.S. on July 10, 2007.

The End of History was produced by Regan himself (mixing the album with Simon Raymonde). Mojo magazine gave the album four stars in a review that dubbed the disc "a debut that oozes rare confidence, startling maturity and originality". Other publications such as The Times and The Guardian also gave the album four out of five stars.

IAMX

+ guests

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £20.00

Some musicians are meant to be heard but not seen - merely an auditory experience and nothing more. IAMX, on the other hand, isn’t merely a band… it’s an event - a full-on aural and visual attack with the dynamic and inimitable English musician and songwriter Chris Corner (founding member of Sneaker Pimps) leading the charge.

With the European marketplace going bonkers for his blend of dramatic synth-rock, darkness-infused pop, and intricately-constructed indie dance, IAMX, currently based in Berlin, has been headlining festivals in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, etc. and sharing the stage with Placebo, Franz Ferdinand, and The Cardigans among others.

Like an 80s electro glam soundtrack to a Jan Švankmajer film or an almost unfathomable hybrid between the sexy swagger of Prince and the cool and collected respectability of Roxy Music, IAMX mixes Chris’ erotically-charged vocals with music that is, at once, frantic yet controlled.

Corner adopts the trappings of mid-'80s electro-pop and new wave acts like New Order, the Cure, and Depeche Mode with his pounding, reverb-swathed, synth-washed compositions,  representing a notable departure from his work with the Sneaker Pimps. His first full-length as IAMX - Kiss & Swallow - was released on Recall in 2004; the sophomore IAMX album, The Alternative, followed on Major two years later; and the 2009 release of Kingdom Of Welcome Addiction, played and produced entirely by Chris Corner - barring Imogen Heap’s guest vocals – matured from the previous up tempo releases into epic, expansive and haunting compositions.IAMX live is Chris Corner (vocals), Janine Gezang (keyboard, guitar, backing vocals), Tom Marsh (drums) and Dean Rosenzweig (guitar).Guest appearances are not unusual with artist such as Sue Denim and Dee Plume from Robots in Disguise, James Cook from Nemo and both halves of The Mighty Boosh, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt all having dropped in.

Boyce Avenue

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £17.00

Boyce Avenue, a Florida-based band popular for its strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound, consists of the three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The band first came together in 2000, when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano) and Fabian (guitar, vocals), then 14 and 16 years old, respectively, started playing guitar. Within 3 months, Alejandro and Fabian took to the stage with their older brother Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals), then 20 years old, to perform before an audience of over 350 at a Pine View High School show. This would be the first of many public performances for the band at the school where its members had all been students together throughout their childhoods.

Focused on the completion of a debut album, Boyce Avenue took a hiatus from its public performance schedule to write, produce, and record additional singles. In July of 2007, the band returned to Atlanta, Georgia, this time to record three songs at the Electron Gardens Studio in the historic Biltmore Hotel. These songs were engineered by Gary Pfaff and Tim Delaney, and were produced by Boyce Avenue. In October of the same year, the band finished tracking for the debut album with the recording of two songs at RMP Studios in Orlando, Florida. The final three songs for the album, "Dare To Believe," "On My Way," and "Hear Me Now (piano acoustic)" were engineered at RMP Studios by Veit Renn (Jennifer Hudson) and Adam Barber (Creed, Shinedown, Alterbridge), and were produced by Boyce Avenue.

The debut album, titled “All You’re Meant To Be,” was released by Boyce Avenue on March 25, 2008. All of the songs were mixed by Austin Deptula (Eisley, New Found Glory), and the entire project was mastered by Rodney Mills (Pearl Jam, REM, Sheryl Crow). The physical album is available worldwide exclusively through www.campuscustom.com/boyceavenue, while the download versions can be found on iTunes/Amazon.com/Rhapsody/Napster/eMusic. Since the album's release, it has been written about in CNN Money, the Kings of A&R, and in other press, its songs have been featured on various MTV shows, and the band has established itself as one of the top 8 Artists of All-Time on YouTube, with over 90 million hits. Most recently, "All You're Meant To Be" has been licensed for sale nationwide in the Philippines through MCA Music, and is on path to Gold status. On the strength of the band's touring success in the United States and the Philippines, the band is poised to launch a worldwide tour in 2009.

Hope Not Hate presents

Billy Bragg

+ The Screaming Bluejays

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £11.00

In case you were unaware, 2010 is an election year. Local politicians are going all out for re-election to councils in England and Wales, while Brown and Cameron will battle it out for the keys to number ten.

The British National Party has set its sights on winning control of Barking and Dagenham council and even the Barking parliamentary seat, where its leader Nick Griffin is standing. While Griffin’s campaign in Barking will receive the bulk of the publicity, at much greater risk is the council, where the BNP could easily emerge either in overall control or as the largest single party.

And it’s not just in London and Essex where the BNP poses a very real threat. Across the country the BNP is preparing for an assault on this country and its people, running campaigns of lies, vilification and hatred, scapegoating and scaremongering at a time of real financial uncertainty and job insecurity.

No election campaign would be complete without the timely intervention of one of Britain’s finest singer songwriters, Billy Bragg. For Bragg is the most trusted troubadour of the progressive forces in Britain (and indeed around the world) who agitate, articulate and educate on behalf of those who may just prefer to stay in bed rather than get out to vote. Billy Bragg is also, proudly, from Barking.

The non-partisan HOPE Not Hate campaign are the proud beneficiaries of Bragg’s ULU performance on 6 March to raise funds and awareness to help stop the electoral rise of the racist BNP. It is Billy Bragg’s badge of honour that his inclusive patriotism, social conscience and outspoken defence of a multicultural Britain has made him the target of so much hatred and bile from the BNP.

In last year’s European election the BNP’s 19.5% vote might seem a long way off the Labour and Tory votes, but since the election of two BNP MEPs to the European parliament, the BNP has continued its assault on the sensibilities of all decent people. Its racism, Islamophobia and insistence that there is no global warming raise new challenges. As Billy himself sang so prophetically, “wearing badges and t-shirts is not enough on days like these”.

To beat them, voting is the key, as is activism. To kick start those ideals and the campaign against fascism, Billy Bragg is the first port of call for anyone wanting to hear the progressives’ clarion call.

HOPE Not Hate is proud to present a walking, talking, singing, breathing, living national treasure to start the campaign against the BNP.

Bolt Thrower

+ Benediction + Rotting Christ + The Rotted

Doors - 5:00 PM

Tickets - £10.00

BOLT THROWER were formed in 1986 by Barry Thomson (guitar) and Gavin Ward (bass). They were soon joined by Alan West (vocals), and completed the line-up with the addition of Andy Whale (drums). At this time Gavin Ward decided to switch to guitar and then recruited Jo Bench on bass to complete the five-piece line-up. At the start of 1988 Vinyl Solution contacted the band and a deal was agreed. Unfortunately, Alan West decided that he no longer wanted to carry on with the band and was replaced by Karl Willetts. With this line-up they went on to record the album 'In Battle There Is No Law'.

After constant gigging around the UK, the band were contacted by both Earache Records and wargaming company, Games Workshop. The result was 'Realm of Chaos', the band’s second studio album, which was released on Earache Records in 1989 and featured cover and booklet artwork from the artists at Games Workshop. BOLT THROWER were starting to create a reputation of being one of the most powerful live acts around when they made their first tour of Europe in 1990. At the start of 1991 they recorded 'Warmaster' at Slaughterhouse Studios, Driffield with Colin Richardson producing and went on to do another successful tour of Europe and the U.S.

Next came 'The IVth Crusade' - recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall in 1992, it showed the band had continued to create their own unique style of music that was easily identifiable as BOLT THROWER. The band promoted the album extensively with tours in Europe and Australia.

The recording of '...For Victory' in 1994 (at Sawmills, again) was immediately followed by the band’s second tour of the U.S. This unfortunately saw the departure of drummer Andy Whale and vocalist Karl Willetts, who decided they didn't want to continue in the band. But the album was released later in the year and the band replaced them with drummer Martin Kearns and Martin Van Drunen on vocals. With this line-up the band carried on the promotion of the album with two European tours.

The next couple of years turned into an endurance test for the band with Van Drunen leaving due to illness, the ending of the band’s relations with Earache Records, the subsequent signing to Metal Blade Records, and the eventual departure of Martin Kearns. Kearns was replaced by Alex Thomas for the recording of the first release on Metal Blade - 'Mercenary', (1998), and the vocalist on this album was to be the re-instated Karl Willetts. But Willetts found he was unable to commit to touring, so Dave Ingram (who had recently left BENEDICTION), filled his postition. 'Mercenary' was greatly received all over the world - in particular Germany, where it made the band’s first entry in the German album charts. Another sold-out tour of Europe followed, and so did another departure, this time drummer Alex Thomas. Martin Kearns was re-recruited, just in time to do the 'With Full Force' festival for the second time, and joined again as a full time member.

In January 2001, the band did a few dates in Holland and Germany, re-affirming their status as one of the best live acts around. Inspired by the response from the shows, the band went straight into the studio to record their 7th album, 'Honour, Valour, Pride'. The album was once again highly received by both the press and the fans, and a European tour with Dave’s former bandmates BENEDICTION followed in 2002.

The band’s next major show was to be the Rock Hard anniversary festival, but unfortunately for the band and the fans, they had to cancel the show, due to the birth of Dave’s baby. A few months later, when the band were beginning to write material for their 8th album, Ingram decided he was unable to continue in the band, and the remaining members found themselves faced with the dilemma of who to replace him with. Ex-member Karl Willetts was the first port of call, and much to the joy of everyone involved, he instantly agreed to re-joining as a full time member of the band again. Karl warmed-up his voice straight away, by re-recording his vocals on a demo version of ‘HVP’, the results showing that his vocal ability was still there in force.

With the line-up complete once again, the next few months were spent writing and re-writing the new material until the band were 100% satisfied with the completed songs. The band spent the summer of 2005 recording the new material, and the results will be revealed soon when the band unleash their 8th studio allbum, ‘Those Once Loyal’, at the end of the year. A European tour is already booked for 2006 and more tours are being planned. The future is looking good…

Here’s to 20 glorious years of BOLT THROWER...

NEXT BIG THING featuring
Every once in a while, something truly unique and mysterious, comes out of nowhere to stake its claim on pop culture as we know it…In 2009 few would have been expecting to have been accosted by Miike Snow, who until now, hidden behind the imagery of a mythical jackalope, the fabled horned rabbit have been churning out a slew of tracks and remixes that have set the blogospheres ablaze, amidst the inevitable questions of what, where & who is Miike Snow?...  A large portion of the people involved in the "creative" side of the music business spend their entire career dedicated to the singular goal of recognition, specifically the type that gets you recognized - be it magazine covers, billboards, TV, etc.  In a culture obsessed with becoming famous, what do we make of artists who chose to remain anonymous? Or, for that matter, use the mystical jackalope as their visual representative? Man? DJ? Robot? Miike Snow is actually a band comprised of Swedish duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, childhood friends who spent time playing in bands and working on various projects in studios throughout Gothenburg. After separate moves to Stockholm they reunited in 2000. Then In 2004, whilst working on writing a pop album for someone else, the pair met American songwriter Andrew Wyatt .The release was small, there was little distribution and an alleged large sum of money was lost in the process, but from the experience a friendship was formed, and in 2007 Miike Snow was born. Karlsson and Winnberg's backgrounds in the DJ scene and punk bands alongside experiments in progressive electro and new rave lead to a series of writing / producing stints with some of the world’s biggest recording artists - culminating in their Grammy win for Best Dance Recording for the song "Toxic" for Britney Spears. Wyatt has been a member in Black Beetle, Fires of Rome and The A.M as well writing and producing the new Daniel Merriweather album with Mark Ronson amongst other things  Miike Snow’s eponymous debut however is a full band collaboration, showcasing both their deft mastery of the studio, while acknowledging each members talent for songwriting, production, arrangement and performance. Here they adopt a collective consciousness far removed from the sum of the individual parts and together Miike Snow have created their own unique sound and space that will continue to evolve both in the studio & more importantly through playing live over the coming months and years.  Recorded in Stockholm in the 400 year old home used to house King Gustaf III's mistress, Miike Snow make pop music, but not as we know it, a pulsing soundtrack for lovers spurred on by hope, fear & redemption. They have created songs that lift and lull, where dark subject matter is used to create beautiful sonic illusions & stimulate euphoria. Miike Snow is a warm electronic record, rich with soul & heart that can soundtrack both dancefloor and darkness and life in between, that will make anonymity an impossibility.  Finally ready to step out of the studio, but not the shadows, Miike Snow is set to be released this summer,  released in the US by the Downtown label (Gnarls Barkley) and in the rest of the world by Columbia Records/Sony Music.

Mayer Hawthorne

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £13.50

Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr.

The “retro” tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. “He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love.” “It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.”

Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding the County (formerly the County Commissioners). But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands. “I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.”

And for those willing to believe anything is possible, be grateful to have Mayer Hawthorne on the scene. It’s not just throwback music anymore – this revival is all about progression.

Cathedral

+ The Church Of Misery + The Gates Of Slumber

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £12.50

To celebrate the release of their latest album ‘The Guessing Game’  Cathedral have announced 6 live shows in late April / early May 2010. Taking in England, Scotland and both Southern and Northern Ireland these dates will represent the bands first headlining tour since the Doomed Trinity package of 2006.

Keeping in the Cathedral tradition of delivering the best possible touring package they can, the band are proud to announce the addition of Tokyo’s heaviest sons of Sabbath Church of Misery and the Orthodox Doom meets True Metal powerhouse that is Indianapolis's The Gates of Slumber.

The Guessing Game’ a Double Album which stands as Cathedral’s 9th full length release will hit the shops on April 29th 2010. Again, produced by Warren Riker (Down, Crowbar, The Fugees) and recorded at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire ‘The Guessing Game’ marks perhaps the most dizzyingly eclectic, eccentric and fascinating album they’ve yet committed to posterity.  Cathedral’s frame of reference has always been a unique one, yet here their curious and captivating sound takes on new dimensions, fuelled in equal parts by a fiercely anti-establishment imperative borne from punk rock origins, and a skyward reach gleaned from a longstanding devotion to the most outré and rewarding realms of progressive rock, folk and psychedelia. A 78-minute, 13-track double-disc set magnum opus, ‘The Guessing Game’ fuses the expansive ambition of the most ornate gatefold double-album with Cathedral’s trademark marriage of incandescent ire and monstrous riffage.
