MTV2 & Gonzo On Tour presents

Goldie Lookin' Chain
If you’re an obsessive live music fan with an anti-social itch for finding the next big bands first, then clear your diary this October and get ready for a big sweaty bear-hug from Gonzo On Tour. Yes, MTV2’s flagship show, Gonzo, is back on the road and coming to a titchy live music venue near you!

For the third year in a row, Zane Lowe’s Gonzo is leaping off its sticky brown sofa and touring the UK’s Barfly venues with a choice selection of the best and most exciting emerging bands in indie rock.

If you want to champion the bands NOW that everyone else will be fawning about next year, take note. Previous Gonzo On Tours have included sets in 150-capacity venues from then little-known bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Maximo Park, Razorlight, Futureheads, The Go! Team, Willy Mason, Hope Of The States, Funeral For A Friend and Hot Hot Heat… bands and artists who as we all know have gone on to be massive. With a heritage like that, you’d have to be blind drunk, laughably misguided or at her majesty’s leisure to miss this year’s Gonzo On Tour.

Zane and the Gonzo team have hand picked a mouth-watering line-up of hot new talent including Editors, be your own PET, Arctic Monkeys, Nine Black Alps, The Rakes, The Morning After Girls, Field Music, The Subways, Kubichek!, Boy Kill Boy, Duels, The Heights and the you-try-saying-it-after-you’ve-had-a-few Test Icicles.

The Gonzo tour bus will hit Birmingham on the 14th October and then lurch into Cardiff, London, Liverpool and York respectively before finally collapsing in Glasgow on October 23rd.

The MTV2 cameras will be filming each of the gigs for broadcast in never on November 12th. Viewers can also see the best gigs from Gonzo On Tour 2003 and 2004 all week from November 7th on MTV2. Gonzo On Tour 2005 will undoubtedly deliver an intimate experience never to be forgotten. It’s going to get hot, it’s going to get sticky and it’s going to get messy – don’t dress up!

Reuben
Bursting with the kind of power and originality that the Foos would be proud of, these Aldershot boys are sounding better all the time and look set to follow the likes of Hundred Reasons and Hell Is For Heroes into the big time. Jamie Lenman is a garrulous and goofy (but fantastic) singer who switches from sensual baritone to psychotic scream. Not quite emo, not quite post grunge and not quite metal, the slogan says it all: Reuben are, quite simply, brill.

Engerica
The power rocking, riff pounding Engerica provide the UK with a post grunge and sprinkling of metalcore offering to be proud of. Cathartic guitars and the sinister and caustic vocals of David Gardner bring rustic passion to this intense and puzzling trio.

’My Demise’, released by Sanctuary records, contains typical metal hooks and a harrowing bass line that give Gardner’s vocals a base from which to explore life and its troubles: chaotic, dark, blasting metal/rock with twisted but humorous lyrics about bogeys and girls with thin legs and fat faces.

It's clear there's a spark in this band which could quite easily burst in to a long-burning flame. Take cover - Engerica may strike when you least expect.

Polysics

+ Distophia + Sabotage Left

Doors - 7:30 PM

Polysics
Polysics are the only Japanese import currently hotter than a PSP, having developed a following with trendsetters from Tokyo to Tottenham.

With wild costumes and a pulsing, energetic live show, they perform technicolor pogo punk in a variety of languages including Japanese, English and their very own ‘space language’.
Formed in 1997 in Tokyo when Hayashi, inspired by Devo, began making music. Over time he recruited three other young musicians - Kayo, Fumi and Yano - with the aim of creating a “inflectional electronic sound that sticks and repeats itself in one’s head”
After successful independent releases, Ki/oon Records / Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc came calling.
Since then, they’ve worked with Nick Beggs of Kajagoogoo, toured the United States three times and finally met their heroes Devo.

Distophia return with “Beat Dyslexia”, their debut full-length and the album the Birmingham-based noise-rock/lo-fi four-piece have always dreamed of making. 2003’s “Soda Lake” was just a warm-up… “Beat Dyslexia” is Distophia. It’s the sheer, visceral thrill of inducing feedback with a battered old amplifier, it’s the warm pleasure of exchanging new, otherwise-unheard music with friends. It’s also the product of a generation of disenfranchised music lovers, those who want nothing more than to tell the world that truly distinctive and original music can still thrive and exist in today’s all-too-cold climate.

Distophia are currently on a sell out tour with ‘Hard-Fi’.

Sabotage Left one of the hottest bands coming from the West Midlands at present. Already storming the live scene they are already being billed as ones to watch. These guys will break soon.

The Young Knives
Three-vox trio The Young Knives are your choice henchman of gritty pop disorder. Clad in tweed suits, boasting a band-member christened The House Of Lords and writing the finest punk-art-pop-eccentro anthems you’ve yet to register amidst your psyche, they’re 2005’s latest, hankering obsession-to-be.

Hailing from Oxfordshire and featuring brothers Henry (lead-guitar) and The Lords (bass), plus Skewie (drums), the band have carved local and minor national ripples over the past few years for a small succession of handsomely penned EPs and mini-releases, yet are now going at it all-guns-a-blazin’.

Being produced by Gang Of Four’s Andy Gill (also the production-head behind Killing Joke, The Futureheads and early Chili Peppers) helps, as does a diary packed with imminent (and recently aired) performances alongside fellow upstart hopes for the year impending – namely, Maximo Park, The Immediate, Tom Vek, Editors and Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies. And then there’s the tunes. Of which, ‘Weekdays & Bleakdays’ has already become a cult web-hit, after having been included on the recent Queens Of Noize ‘Best of 2005’ iTunes release. Not so much ‘nifty’ as ‘revelatory’. Would we lie to you?

Melodic, uplifting vocals and harmonies, side-by-side with tortured, assaulting screams. Mathematically precise rhythms and complex fretwork, giving way to loose jam-inspired divergences. Pop-meets-punk-meets-metal-meets-rock in the unlikeliest of places: this is the musical crossroads where you'll find Washington State-based trio The Fall of Troy, skittering off defiantly in one direction after another, refusing to stick to any one established road. If it sounds like it all adds up to chaos, that's because it often does - but only in the same beautiful way as our own everyday experience. And with "Doppelganger," their Equal Vision debut, The Fall of Troy are here to show us that there's not only light in the darkness and darkness in the light, but that sometimes it's hard to even tell where one ends and the other begins.

Ricky Warwick From The Almighty

Ricky Warwick From The Almighty
Born in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland, Ricky attended his first concert at age 14, seeing Stiff Little Fingers. The experience “Changed my life...suddenly I knew exactly what I wanted to do and nothing was ever gonna be the same again.”

Ricky played in numerous bands throughout his teen years, but began his professional musical career as the rhythm guitarist in New Model Army. After their disintegration, the young guitarist went on to found The Almighty in his native Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2002, Ricky embarked on a solo career and recorded his first release, Tattoos & Alibis. Recorded in Dublin, Ireland, Ricky collaborated with Peter O’ Toole of Hothouse Flowers and Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy fame. This album brought about a much different feel than his past efforts with The Almighty, with Ricky drawing from his influences such as Steve Earle, Johnny Cash, Ramones and The Clash. Released in September of 2003 through Sanctuary Records, Tattoos & Alibis was produced by Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott.

Just a few short years later and we find Ricky gearing up for his much anticipated sophomore effort. On Love Many Trust Few, due out on Sanctuary Records in the Spring of 2005, he has co-written songs with Irish singer/songwriter Kieran Goss, famed Nashville writers - Sharon Vaughn (Willie Nelson, Reba McIntire, Oakridge Boys) and Rob Crosby (Martina McBride) as well as Del James (Guns N’ Roses). Guest appearances include Joe Elliott and Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard.

LunarMile's style is unique, yet contain clear rock influences from bands from Led Zeppelin and The Stones to Queen. Fronted by Toni-Marie Iommi daughter of the Black Sabbath guitar legend their music is a breathtaking kaleidoscope mix of classic, modern, heavy rock and pop music.

Blackballoon are a four-piece Birmingham based rock band that write, compose and produce all their own music. Drawing on such influences as The Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, Vertical Horizon, Dream Theater and Muse. Blackballoon are one of the UK’s premier unsigned bands going from strength to strength, with support from legends such as Richie Kotzen and Jeff Scott-Soto, they hope to get your support too.

white rose movement
White Rose Movement are a panacea for the umpteenth wave of angular guitar bands. Their debut album, fuses electronics and guitars with consummate skill. First single, 'Love Is A Number', is a feral blast of percussive synths, twangy bass, mechanised guitars and Finn’s distinctive, soaring vocals. A measure of its hard-to-categorise appeal is the fact that it’s been played both at taste-making London club Trash and on Kerrang! radio. White Rose Movement’s free spirit approach to making music is probably a result of two factors: they used to run a club, Dazzle! in an old S&M venue in London’s East end – M.I.A. and Chris Cunningham have played there; and four members of the band – Jasper, Finn, Owen and Ed – spent their childhood on a hippy commune. One minute White Rose Movement are showing New York a thing or two about disco punk with the jaunty bassline and nimble pop chorus of 'Girls In The Back', the next they’re out rocking all comers with the dark, aggressive thrash of 'Alsatian'.

The Academy Is
The Academy Is... almost never was. Frontman William Beckett and guitarist Mike Carden grew up as rivals, in separate bands on the Chicago local music scene. With a shared passion for the same classic bands (Pink Floyd, Led Zep and U2), alongside a similar love for more contemporary bands such as Weezer and Death Cab For Cutie, they decided they should join forces and write together. And thus, the band was born. Their debut album, Almost Here, produced by James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Underoath), is a love letter to music itself; a smart, honest record about growing up, having dreams and making them come true. Come see it live!

The Heights
The Heights are 4 young UK lads playing 'Thrilling, visceral Rock and Roll' (Artrocker)! Their debut single 'Long Way Home', a limited edition release through Best Before Records, served as an incredible introduction for the band to the UK scene. Their 'anthemic, riff-righteous rock songs with a snarling, shrugging indifference!' (The Fly) have led the band to early critical acclaim and spots on MTV Gonzo, NME Chart Show, Brand Spanking New, KerrangTV, E4's Freshly Squeezed, The Amp, Popty TV, Unit 5 TV, Pop Factory, etc. Having toured with 'Editors' and 'The Crimea' over the last few months, the band are ready to kick things off for their second single 'Jamaica Beer Eyes' touring with 'Stellastarr*' & 'The Morning After Girls' before making several appearances at SXSW this March!! Definitely, a band to watch!!!

The Ripps "As catchy as bird flu, as much fun as a bouncy castle and as cute as kittens." - Media Assassin. "High energy Ramones flavoured chops to English psychedelia, via Mexico, Morricone & Madchester." - Fused Magazine. "The Ripps are a sharp, snappy trio that bring a much needed sense of style to the table and by any rights you'll see them on Popworld in the next few months." - Blowback. Now for a bit of shameless name dropping! The Ripps have played shows with Maximo Park, Editors, Dead 60's, The Research, Towers Of London, The Duke Spirit, The Noisettes, 10,000 Things, El Presidente, Archie Bronson Outfit, The Rifles, The On Offs, Thee Unstrung, Selfish Cunt, Misty's Big Adventure, Merz to name but a few.....

Scratchy shambolic riffs, and powerful addictive rhythms running underneath a distinctively strong, yet laid back vocal is the key formula in Pint Shot Riot's impressively delightful unit of sound...

THE PEAKZ began life as Melys Bass player Rich Eardley gathering some friends to record a few demos for £50 at a local studio. This Demo of Conwy Valley Love Song was picked up and played numerous times by the late, great, John Peel. Its rammed full of bizarre plot twists, action, violence, robbery, fire and welsh organic mud!
Yet unlike all the L.A. make-believe, the events in this story are ALL TRUE.

Highbrow hip hop for those put off by gunshots and shouting … From Halifax, Nova Scotia to London via Paris, mixing old-wives' tales and real/imagined experiences with freight car hobos, weird Middle America and lone road soldiers on soul-searching experiences. Yeah, this is the Jack Kerouac of hip-hop; a Bboy version of Tom Waits and the folk/country influences are there more than ever. Howling Bells
“The sound of PJ Harvey hitching a ride with the Velvet Underground through Twin Peaks.” NME

Howling Bells possess a sound reminiscent of another town, another time. They'll take you to a place far eerier than Twin Peaks. They'll spirit you to the abandoned Old West, to a town shrouded in snowfall, illuminated by campfire. In this town the beguiling melodies of this five-piece will reel and roll about your head like desire and anticipation - the twin themes of their forthcoming debut album.

Just as vocalist Juanita Stein's silky and sultry voice effortlessly traverses bouts of sudden calm, creeping rage and perfect pop, so too does their music. Lurching from blues-fuelled rock to country-folk lamentations, the buzzsaw melancholy of "Velvet Girl" and the barbed longing of "I'll Wait" are pitted against the unadulterated garage blues of "Low Happening" and the saloon-swagger of "Broken Bones." Then there's "The Bell Hit" - a song in possession of a carousing chorus within a simple yet poetic refrain. Of all these songs, one thing rings true - the Howling Bells will haunt and return to you.

-------------------------------------------

Dead Letter Office are an alternative/progressive rock band from near Birmingham in the UK. BBC Birmingham Live describe them as
"Intelligent lyrics delivered with passion and backed by haunting instrumentation. Shades of The Cure but with much more feeling. During their set I warmed to Dead Letter Office immensely, a truly talented and unique young band."

Bring Me The Horizon
Bring Me the Horizon, five young British lads with a penchant for heavy. Essentially This is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For is an 18 minute mid nineties breakdown; four tracks of intense raging chugging and squealing, stop/starting and severe ‘core riffing. Nary a second hand euro thrash riff to be found, nary a melodic sung chorus, all things about this genre that irritate me are devoid (well save for girls pants and backwards hair-cuts). I was sold on TIWTEOYSWMF after viewing a minute long promo clip on MySpace featuring the indomitable closing mosh to “They Have No Reflection” (which damn well better be a song about vampires) with live footage. I was sold on the sheer intensity of their attack, the stone cold passion with which they present their sound. A nonstop attack, the vocals never quit, the raspy screech and pit growling, gang screams and occasional spoken epitaphs, the power of these dudes does not stop, the violence does not cease until the last seconds of harried screaming (very reminiscent of a certain Acrid track) and the line “I fucking love you… .”

MISTRESS (UK) Birmingham’s own bastard sons of old Swedish styled death metal grindcore. All round good lads, who play an incinerating live set.A recent U.K. tour with MUNICIPAL WASTE proved successful.Signed to Earache Records, and drinking bars dry throughout the land…………..

Rising from the ashes of bands as diverse as Innate, Tenfoldtruth, Farfallen and Delerium Tremenze, State of Serenity are here to tear it up. Combining the fast metal riffing of bands such as Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying with the crushing beatdowns of Hatebreed and It Dies Today and adding a pinch of melody akin to Poison the Well and Caliban, State of Serenity have sound and an energy all of their own.

Gym Class Heroes
Rightly recognized as true pioneers of live hip-hop, the Geneva, NY-based band Gym Class Heroes has won popular and critical acclaim for kicking out genre-busting jams that seamlessly meld rap, rock, R&B, and anything else that happens to strike the musically voracious outfit’s fancy. Frontman Travis McCoy states “The whole fun element of hip-hop has disappeared. Everybody takes themselves so seriously, it’s become a fashion show more or less. We want the vibe to be as fun as possible.”

Breaking musical boundaries and changing perceptions of what hip-hop or indie or rock can be, with Gym Class Heroes, what you see isn’t always what you get. Though the overall feel of their album ‘As Cruel As School Children’ is bright and breezy, McCoy’s personal, playful lyrics can often be peeled back to reveal hidden layers of emotion and introspection, notably on songs such as the first single, The Queen and I.

“It’s a personal song,” Travis says, “about girls who fancy alcoholic beverages, girls who like to have too much of a good time. I have weird underlying issues with females and alcohol. This song is kind of like closure, though you’d never get that vibe listening to the song. It’s fun to do things like that, make music that’s fun with a really poppy vibe, but when you listen to the lyrics, it’s like, ‘Holy shit, that dude just said…’ If you’re not paying attention, you think it’s just another radio ditty that sticks in your head, but then when you really listen you see it’s a whole lot more.”

Skindred
RAGGA PUNK METAL! With elements of Metal, Dancehall, Punk, and Drum & Bass, all swirling into a concoction of lethal addictiveness, Skindred make Metal heads, Punks and Dread heads rock out to the same songs; this is the true meaning of unity in sound.

Opportunities to share the stage with bands such as Korn, Sevendust, Nonpoint, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Voodoo Glow Skulls, POD, Soulfly (to name but a few), has allowed the band to build a rapidly growing international fan base. With songs like Nobody, Set It Off, Pressure and Selector this band is so far apart from the pack that any attempt to describe or categorize them is an exercise in futility. If Barrington Levy joined Pantera, where Bounty Killa met The Police, where Sublime met System Of A Down, you would find the sonic landscape Skindred calls home.

You'll have to look far & wide to find a band that encapsulates so many diverse styles, and unites different schools and cultures of music under one roof. In a desperate time where music fans are tired of the medio-core, starved for something new & striking, Skindred are the force that could sweep all generic adversaries aside.

Oneyesblue has been recently described as 'The Sweethearts of the Rodeo' with 'ambition, drive and a stage performance that you can not keep your eyes off!' They deliver a raw 60s Basement Blues sound, fuzzed out guitars, pounding drums and harmonised vocal melodies.

Oneyesblue, although under two years old, have some great achievements to boast. The band have recently supported the likes of The Thrills, The Zutons, Maximo Park, OK GO!, The Crimea, Hal, Shout Out Louds, Two Gallants, Mohair, The Raveonettes amongst many others.

DESPITE THE BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS TONIGHTS SHOW IS STILL GOING AHEAD AND WE DO STILL HAVE TICKETS FOR SALE ON THE DOOR. HOWEVER THERE WILL BE NO CLUB FOLLOWING THE GIG - THE VENUE WILL CLOSE AT 10PM

Asbury Park, NJ is Bruce Springsteen’s town. There’s no two ways about it. So when The Bouncing Souls moved there to write what would become The Gold Record, Bruce’s old ghosts, spirits which permeate the area, were almost sure to appear. It happens to anyone who’s ever been to a rock show at The Stone Pony, Asbury’s most famous jaunt. I’ve seen it time and time again. Shit, I’ve even seen the Souls cover Springsteen at the Pony. Anyway, in 1999 Springsteen made it into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for the songwriting abilities he honed on the Jersey Shore. In 2006 it’s fitting that the Souls create their latest album on the same hallowed streets. The result is undoubtedly the Bouncing Souls greatest achievement in songwriting and what will be one of the best albums of the year.

Mayday / The dARLINGS

Mayday were brought up on Britpop along with a bit of Queen and some soul music too. But then they got bored of that so they decided to listen to a bit of 60s intrumental jazz prog and a little bit of Dizzie Rascal to wet their musical whistles.

All those influences have gave birth to this monstrous IndieDanceArtProg child called Mayday who hangs about in sweaty pubs with a group of people called the Mayday Mob.

DEEP within the dark black smoke of the Black Country, 4 young men from the little known town of Walsall formed a band called The dARLINGS. At a mere 6 months old the band have already built a huge following across the West Midlands, Manchester and London. Their live show engulfs crowds with their killer bass lines, powerful riffs, pumping beats and wry lyrical content. Each member is a performer in his own right. THE MAN ON THE STREET'S FLUSTERED GIRLFRIEND SAID, "Its not just a gig you get with The dARLINGS it's a right experience!"

Casino Twist started out at the end of 2004 when four guys quickly made a name for themselves on the gig circuit as a high energy indie rock act with a love for entertaining. After the departure of their original drummer, the band strengthened their sound with the arrival of a new drummer and second guitarist. Bens powerful deliverance on the mic, backed up by supercharged riffs, mean and moody bass licks, and precision drumming creates a sound that wows audiences every time.

Nick Harper

Nick Harper is a highly accomplished guitarist to whom the term virtuoso truly belongs, yet his guitar playing is only a part of his skill. As well as a distinctive and soulful voice, Nick is the kind of artist who reaffirms faith in the art of original songwriting. Nick was first heard in 1983 when he appeared on his father Roy Harper's collaboration with Jimmy Page. Following that, his first solo release was the ‘Light At The End of The Kennel’ EP in 1994. Nick soon supported Squeeze front man and songwriter Glenn Tilbrook, who was so impressed he offered Nick a job playing with Squeeze and promptly signed him to his own label, Quixotic Records. Following tours across the UK, USA and Japan, wowing audiences from New York to Glastonbury, Nick has developed a reputation for creating great audience rapport, with songs that are both intense and emotionally charged. All this puts him right on the crest of a new wave of Brit acoustic troubadours.

Vijay Kishore is a singer/songwriter from Birmingham,England whose reputation is steadily building with every gig he plays .Likend by many to everyone from Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,PJ Harvey and Freddie Mercury these high grade comparisoms are not lost on Vijay (indeed he is an admirer of many of these artists work)but the fact of the matter is Vijay has been busy defining and refining his own particular take on the highly emotive, expressive and extraordinarily soulful troubadour, fusing aspects of his western upbringing with his eastern roots to concoct a heady brew which makes for a unique experience. Vijay broke out of the local gigging circuit in Birmingham in early 2005 where he had been plying and learning his art and frankley hasn't looked back supporting the likes of the legendary Ray Davies,Nizlopi,Sebastien Tellier,Blackbud,Karine Polwart and Keisha White whilst playing alongside the likes of Jamie T,Keith,Scott Matthews,Tiny Dancers and Declan O'Rourke(plus two U.S jaunts under his belt) .A wide and varied selection of artists which in turn reflects the wide appeal of Vijay Kishore's music. Although at the moment still unsigned Vijay has begun to attract the interest of record labels and has recently been in the

Fresh to the London acoustic scene, Jim Gipson bears his heartfelt lyrics with a voice that demands your undevoted attention. Jims songs, pure and simply amaze your very ears, peirce your heart, and with a unique vulnerability he keeps you hanging on his every word.

THE MYSPACE BLEEP BLEEP TOUR

GoldenVoice and Leading Lifestyle Portal Take New Bands on Nationwide Tour

Pull Tiger Tail have been attracting much attention with their single “Mr 100 Percent” and are building up a huge onsite following. Signed to B-Unique, the label that founded the Kaiser Chiefs, Ordinary Boys and The Automatic, Pull Tiger Tail are set to become this year’s biggest indie commercial breakthrough band. Those who are particularly interested in finding out about these roaring felines should visit www.myspace.com/pulltigertail to find out more.

Ali Love is 25 years old, writes, plays and produces all of his songs, Living and working out of East London, Love’s songs are soaked in wry observations of the world of lost weekends, dodgy after hours drinking dens and even dodgier one night stands that he sees happening all around him, interpreted through a musical palette that’s one part Neptunes to two parts disco funk Chic. His Debut single K-Hole has become a cult phenomenon.
Ali is currently holed up in the studio recording his debut album for Columbia Records.
“Unfeasibly catchy glam-punk extravaganza about a night spent on horse tranquilizers which culminated with Ali naked in a bin – respect!” NME (NME Single of the week 11/7/06)

Support at all other venues will come from indie disco darlings I Say Marvin, who have recently relocated from their Cornish hometown to take on the Brighton scene. Their irresistibly catchy power pop is sure to win over the crowds, and they can be sampled at www.myspace.com/isaymarvin.

The MYSPACE BLEEP BLEEP TOUR will include more than just a set of live gigs. Fans will be encouraged to post their images, videos, and reviews of the nights on site at www.myspace.com/liveintheuk to create a virtual mirage as the tour progresses.

Isis 14+

Isis create their own universe and rules, they are compromisingly heavy, slow and brutal, but apply a deftness of touch that so many other bands using the quiet/loud dynamic miss completely. They are hard to categories, but all the more interesting for it, using vocals sparingly they approach the idea of a voice as another instrument in their cannon, they want to bludgeon you but they also want you to see the inherent beauty in all that is ugly and while you imagine that a band playing ten minute slow burning epics would be boring to watch they are hypnotising and entrancing and above all exciting.

Silversun Pickups

In the brutally cold world of Big Rock Biz, there’s something very comforting about just knowing that a band like L.A.’s Silversun Pickups exists. That feeling derives from the group’s searingly sumptuous music, sure, but it has a lot to do with knowing their rather humble origins and super-admirable raison d’etre.
Silversun Pickups, you see, rather than being just another fiercely determined young band willing to claw and scrap their way to the top of the rock heap, genuinely appear to be far more like a gang of real, true friends who happened, quite fortuitously, to meet as a result of their mutual love of — shock horror! — music, and who seem to enjoy each other’s company as much as they like playing their own brand of ravishing rock noise.

Born in Birmingham in 2004 Dirty Soul consist of Jamie Clayton vocals & guitar, James Payne Guitar, Andrew Evans Bass and Peter Gillett Drums. We hope you enjoy what you hear, leave us feedback and come and check us out sometime. 'Spine-tingling' The Fly

The Move

Doors - 7:30 PM

The Move
The Move was one of the UK’s finest groups of the 60’s and early 70’s but only formed through the urging of David Bowie. The singer, performing as Davy Jones at Birmingham’s legendary Cedar Club in 1965, met Ace Kefford and Trevor Burton and over a drink, encouraged the two young musicians to get their own group together.  Soon after, the duo invited Roy Wood, Carl Wayne and Bev Bevan to join and complete the original Move line-up. A year later, their debut single ‘Night Of Fear’ was a no.2 smash hit. As the 60’s turned into the 70’s, the original line-up fragmented until only Wood and Bevan, plus later Move member Jeff Lynne, remained. The trio celebrated a final top 10 hit with ‘California Man’ in 1972 before developing the group into the Electric Light Orchestra and even greater success. The Move’s live performances have been remembered for stunning musicianship and frenzied demolitions of televisions, instruments and stages with an axe, chopping a Cadillac to pieces at London’s Roundhouse and inciting a riot which alarmed headline act The Who (the stage had to be rebuilt…). Even the famous Marquee Club was not safe. During a performance of ‘Fire Brigade’, the stage was set alight, resulting in the Soho district being jammed with fire engines. So shocking and fiery were The Move live, that for a while, the group were banned from every theatre in the UK and Europe, a decade before the Sex Pistols’ similar punk rock antics. They even threatened Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s government with the furore surrounding the promotional campaign for ‘Flowers In The Rain’.

FIGHTSTAR
It was over the summer of 2006 that Fightstar began working on the songs that would shape their second album. "We sent our ex-label the least heavy songs we had written," says bassist Dan Haigh. "But they said they wanted a more pop record. I think they wanted us to be a more commercial prospect. That was the last thing we ever wanted to do. Having fought such a long battle to be viewed as a band in our own right, can you imagine how it felt to be told to go in a more pop direction? Did they really want us to go through that war again?"

So ex-label Universals desire for Simpson to head into territory he had left behind meant a split was inevitable, allowing the band to sign with new label Gut records who, "couldn't have been more encouraging," says drummer Omar Abidi. "Suddenly we felt wanted. Suddenly we felt like we were in it together with the label. The pressure was off - we could just concentrate on the music."

And its music that's been wrought from the heart, far more so than the majestic sci-fi panorama of debut album Grand Unification. "This record is much, much more personal," says Simpson. "Most of the first album was written in the third person and intended as social commentary. This one is about what has been going on in our lives.

Fightstar have recently finished touring with Funeral for a friend & Madina Lake and are ready for the Emma Scott Xmas Presents...experience!

LOSTALONE
Lostalone are from Derby and are one of the most exciting new bands out there at the moment. A truly electrifying live set will leave you breathless.

The band have shared stages and toured with the likes of Enter Shikari (who they are currently on a European tour with), Paramore, Angel & Airwaves, Funeral For a Friend, The Blackout, Silverstein, Boysetsfire, Skin, The Kooks, Wolfmother, and My chemical romance, the latter citing Lostalone as their favourite band!

They were nominated for "best newcomers" at this year's Kerrang Awards

High On Fire

With a heavy-handed approach and a sound that crashes like thunder, HIGH ON FIRE has put the power back in 'power-trio.' Less a band than a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness, the band has burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype.

HIGH ON FIRE was formed by guitarist Matt Pike in late summer 1998; a scant six months after the breakup of his previous band, the enigmatic stoner-metal legend SLEEP. Formed out of the need to simply play guitar again, Pike jammed with settled on a line-up of powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime guitarist friend George Rice, who made the switch to bass to round out the trio.

HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With their latest release, "Blessed Black Wings", guitarist / vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.

Manchester Orchestra ~ Ages 14+
Though Manchester Orchestra has only been a proper band for a year and a half, this young quintet (with an average age of 19) has crafted an album that sounds more aware and traveled than many of its more aged peers. Led by singer / songwriter / guitarist Andy Hull, Manchester Orchestra's debut LP, I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child , is a statement cinematic in scope - a series of emotional vignettes that delicately unravel over the course of an elegantly conceived musical arc that recalls both murky southern mysticism and the id borne bombast of the Pacific Northwest. Driven by lyrics that are insightful, spiritual and impressionistic, I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child is a litany of intimate details presented in widescreen. Just as the pointillist paintings of Georges Pierre Seurat or the films of Robert Altman lead our attention to the fine details, Manchester Orchestra also find inspiration in the intimate; but it is when we are able to gain some distance we begin to see the bigger picture and wonder where our experience fits in.

If you've been watching the sad procession of bands on Channel 4's Sunday afternoon Mobile Unsigned with Alex Zane you'll have seen one act stand out; and the camera panning across Jo Whiley, Alex James and company all mouthing "Wow". That would be Hijak Oscar, then. Named after the band on a doomed riverboat and mashing Tom Waits with Floyd, and Son House with The Who, this six-piece is completely original; utterly compelling and when they're flipping huge in 2008 you can say you were on 'em first here.

York's 7-piece answer to Brian Wilson's imagination gently developing in the hands and harmonica of Tim Fox. A sound of sex, soul and searing imagination with an arsenal of instruments including sax, mandolin, banjo, slide, piano and, of course, guitars - electric and acoustic . Tim's 'born in the wrong era' blues vocals and Emma's collar-grabbing voice top off a delicate, harmonious and impassioned performance all dressed up Tarantino-stylee. Is there something special happening here? We think so ...Now "Imagine The White Stripes sung by a writhing, pint sized hybrid of Debbie Harry and every sassy female who has graced rock n roll... everything, everywhere is sweat, hair and nervous energy. -NME  Straight-up indie rock'n'roll with a hint of blues. A fast-paced bank getaway gone right. Picture the Kings of Leon in a fist-fight with The Kills, being cheered on by a husky Debbie Harry and you'll begin to get the picture... Ladies and Gentlemen….Mr Derry

Glorious blues rock with moments of velvety softness, then a cannonball of guitars and drum fury (served by a guy with the greatest 'dreads in music)...with a Texas twist. In all seriousness this is a seriously good band. Why the hell hadn't I heard of them before? I guess that's what these night are all about. If you love The Doors, Deep Purple, Cream...that whole late '60's early 70's classic rock era, you'll love...and I mean love...Velvet Texas Cannonball. - Hearing Aid 07'

Infadels 14+
Hello – We ARE the Infadels and for the many who seem confused or in need of enlightenment, this is what we are all about…

Five young(ish) men from east London - but hey, don't let that put you off.

Founded out of the frustration of previous failed musical ventures, a love of 90's dance music (although crucially NOT the Shamen) and rock n' roll bands like The Stooges, The Stones and The Scream, we decided it was time to kill hum-glum wafer thin indie music and create a racket all of our own. Far too many people play it far too cool these days, don't ya think?

Time to turn those frowns upside down, uh-huh yeah. So, knowing that the music industry is terminally screwed we started releasing records ourselves, starting with “Leave Your Body” on our own Dead At Thirty imprint. One more 12” and several shambolic shows later we run out of money and shut up shop. Then Wall of Sound came a knocking waving contracts (but rest assured, not ca$h) and we thought we'd give it a serious blast. We lied to WOS, telling them we had a finished album ready for release and they seemed to go for it. We managed to hold them off for about six months but they finally saw through our cunning ruse. In comes Jagz Kooner to make sure we finish the job and after much blood sweat and tears we get there! “We Are Not The Infadels” came out in January this year and we've been touring it ever since. Happy days.

Misinterpreted by some but loved by many, we continue the job of doing our insane shows and writing the best songs we can. Hard work makes the world go round after all.

Still, many seem think we are loutish, lager boys who are screaming, shouting and vomiting our way round the UK and Europe . We'll have you know that this is an unfounded lie…apart from the vomiting.

So there you are.

Holy Fuck are creating a legacy based on near stupidity. It’s a simple concept, to mimic modern electronic music without using modern fail-safes like laptops and programmed backing tracks… and of course to make people freak out and smash stuff. So for last year’s NXNE festival they armed themselves with a drum set, a bass guitar, a myriad of toy keyboards, guitar peddles, mixers, and even a 35 mm film synchronizer and hit the stage, without even rehearsing. Luckily they remembered to bring extra batteries.

Kaiser Chiefs

They've conquered the charts and now pack the crowds in at massive stadiums, but luckily for us (and you) they've agreed to play an exclusive intimate gig.

Since the release of their latest album 'Yours Truly, Angry Mob' the Kaiser's already busy schedule has reached a new level of hectic with the band packing out larger and larger venues, their catchy single 'Ruby' also gave them their first number one.

In a few months time Ricky and the guys will headline the Isle of Wight Music Festival and play a massive stadium gig at Elland Road in their hometown of Leeds. However before all that they'll be playing an intimate 400 capacity gig exclusively for us in Birmingham.

For a chance to win tickets visit http://www.brmb.co.uk/Article.asp?id=581748&spid=354 and listen to BRMB Radio! 96.4FM for competition giveaways and more info! (especiallty after 7pm ;-)

"Delivering very personal songs probably closer to the late great Sandy Denny than, for example, Sarah Vaughan; Gwyneth Herbert has found her voice – and an exquisite one as well.  Compacted, narrative jewels rub shoulders with bittersweet balladry, all rich with mood and weathered texture.  "Superb music ... brilliantly original, full of space and isolated detail." – MOJO.

So what exactly is Tokyo Police Club? Perhaps EYE Weekly summed it up best when they wrote "[Tokyo Police Club] are undeniably catchy and raw, marrying danceable hooks with talk of robot masters and global emergencies, providing an upbeat soundtrack to our troubled times." Somehow, the deeply innocuous subdivisions of Newmarket, Ontario have hatched a four-headed beast of tunefulness.

Late Of The Pier 'Levis Ones To Watch'

Late Of The Pier was created somewhere in the mists of 2003, born from the warped minds of Sam Eastgate and Ross Dawson somewhere in the mists of G.C.S.E's. No-one can remember exactly how it happened but lets just presume it went something like… 'Lets start a band' 'OK' …ignoring the fact that neither Ross or future guitarist Faley had only ever touched their instruments once at this point. (Ross had a knock-about on Sam's drums one evening, Faley skipped school to get stoned in Sam's attic and make a song 'Wasted Intellectuals'... probably LOTP's first song).

LOTP found a home in Way Out West and it's all-ages gigs, their feelings reciprocated by the new generation. Stuck mid-way between an older generation of somewhat static crowds and a younger generation of hyper-active kids, LOTP gained a dedicated following in the younger generations through myspace.com and for the energy of their live shows and in the older generations for the music itself. The Klaxons/NME had just coined the phrase 'Nu-Rave' and Late Of The Pier's ideas of live music began to become popular with the mainstream. With this came more interest from the music industry… NME and Radio1 quickly picked up on the band, noting them as one of the bands to watch out for in 2007 and music industry king-pins and affiliates soon became regular attendees to London gigs, often for pleasure instead of business.

Sun Kil Moon is the project of singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek, best known for his previous band, Red House Painters. Sun Kil Moon sees Kozelek undertake the writing, composing, singing and guitar playing accompanied by Tim Mooney and Anthony Koutsos on drums, and Geoff Stanfield on bass.

The band is named after Korean bantamweight boxer Sung-Kil Moon.

Sun Kil Moon's debut album, Ghosts of the Great Highway, first released in 2003 by Jetset Records, contains several songs concerned with true-life stories of deceased boxers, such as featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez, flyweight Pancho Villa, and also Duk Koo Kim.

Ghosts of the Great Highway was re-issued as a double CD on February 6, 2007 on Kozelek's own label, Caldo Verde. The second disc features six bonus tracks, including the cover of "Somewhere" written by Leonard Bernstein.

The band's follow-up Tiny Cities was released on November 1, 2005 on Kozelek's Caldo Verde Records. The album covers eleven songs by the indie/alternative group Modest Mouse.

The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!John Peel.

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles, not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. That was back in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases. In this fashion, the debut single GO OUT AND GET ‘EM BOY! was collected from the pressing plant, delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. From GEORGE BEST, “an unmitigated delight” [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.

Gonzo Tour feat. Mystery Jets

As we limp from our washout of a summer into the long, dark days of autumn, fear not, we bring good news. MTV TWO’s Gonzo On Tour is gearing up for its annual romp around the UK.

An event that has become as synonymous with October as Halloween itself,
Gonzo On Tour reigns supreme in any avid music fan’s calendar. This year promises big talent in little venues. We will be cramming headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, The Automatic, Mystery Jets, Foals and Glasvegas into teeny-weeny venues. Why? So you can get up close and personal with your favourite performers. A far cry from the blips-on-screen you may have squinted at the festivals, you will literally be able to shower in the sweat of your idols!

A cracking support line-up: Iglu And Hartly, Noah And The Whale, Late Of The Pier, Esser, Friendly Fires and Magistrates, are all confirmed for the UK-wide tour.

Hosted by Zane Lowe and supported by Topman, the Gonzo Tour bus will land in Liverpool on Friday 10th October to kick off the revelry.

Gonzo on Tour has always been about the best of new talent...nurturing little known bands that have gone on to be huge. Previous Gonzo on Tour alumni include Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro... the tour has also provided Maximo Park, Razorlight, and 2008 headliners, Kaiser Chiefs, with their debut TV performances.

Reeling from last year’s 5th Birthday celebrations, culminating in the still talked about Queens Of The Stone Age bash, the Gonzo team have delivered once again in securing this year’s stellar line-up. In addition to plucking hot new thangs including, Iglu And Hartley and Noah And The Whale, Gonzo veterans, Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party pay homage to their favourite brown couch to headline the London and Glasgow dates respectively.

MTV TWO cameras will be filming at each gig and will capture backstage interviews and mayhem to air from Friday 14th November at 7pm.

But the fun doesn't stop when the bands come off-stage.  No sirree - we're bringing you an official Gonzo after party!  Zane Lowe will be taking to the decks for one of his justifiably legendary DJ sets and the Gonzo team are cooking up a host of other shenanigans and surprses to keep you up WAY past your bed time.

Formed near Munich as a hardcore punk band, the Notwist gradually began to embrace a fusion of classic '80s indie-pop songwriting and scruffy electronic backings indebted to Oval and Autechre. The quartet is comprised of brothers Markus and Micha Acher (on vocals/guitar and bass, respectively) plus programmer/keyboard player Martin Gretschmann and drummer Martin Messerschmidt. Their self-titled 1989 debut and 1992's Nook were rough-and-tumble punk LPs. Third album 12 marked the group's first flirtation with electronics, though the chord structures and vocals of Markus Acher marked the nowtist more as an alternative band. The band then gained an American distribution deal with Zero Hour, and after 12 was reissued, fourth album Shrink appeared in 1998. Gretschmann has also recorded on his own as Console.

Cold War Kids - MOVED FROM IRISH CLUB - TICKETS REMAIN VALID

Reagan babies, missile fears, and international blues. Cold War Kids started with jangly guitar, hand claps, and a Harmony amp in a storage room atop Mulberry Street restaurant in downtown Fullerton, CA. Dreaming the American dust bowl and British maritime. On the restaurants roof the sound and feeling was cultivated and burned, built and hallowed out, painted and stripped to the primer. Cold War Kids make songs about human experience in orchards and hotel rooms, laundromats and churches, sea ports and school halls. Using songs of Dylan, Billie Holiday, and the Velvet Underground as a road map, they strive to manipulate, structure, and style their music with honesty.

Gojira
It’s always been hard to put a tag on GOJIRA, one of the most extreme bands that the French metal stage has ever known, has never been in need of this sort of artefact anyway.

Of course, when all this began in 1996, in a garage near Bayonne – South East of France – under the GODZILLA moniker the motivations of the Duplantier brothers (Joe on guitar/lead vocals and Mario on drums) and their band fellows Jean-Michel Labadie (on bass) and Christian Andreu (guitar) were less than sophisticated. But even through the thinnest booklet of their first demo cover issued under the predictable title “Possessed” still emerged the first signs of their future emancipation.

GODZILLA might have been a big green monster smashing down cardboard buildings, taken from Japanese science-fiction films from the 60s deemed out of style today, but it was also a metaphor about the threat of nuclear weapons with which man plays, unconscious of the consequences…

Due to legal rights, GODZILLA changed its name to GOJIRA right before their first album. GOJIRA is in fact the Japanese translation of its original name. Even though the music had already changed, the way of doing things stayed the same. So call it whatever you want: an ecological thought, a politically correct speech, a 50% new age and 50% hippy mentality…the band, itself, remains the same since birth.

Today, there is much blabbering about how to take care of our planet and watch over its well-being. There is idle talk about the future shortage of petrol, about the ozone layer or even about the extension of the webbed footed rabbit of Uzbekistan (why not?!). But nothing is done about it. Nothing at all!

Metal Blade Assault Tour feat The Rotted
Born out of the dingy London back streets, The Rotted have risen up and established themselves as one of the UK’s leading extreme metal acts.

Though proud to be spawned in the death and extreme metal scene, the boys’ influences aren't just the ones normally associated with the style of music they create. The Rotted’s take on the genre comes from a completely different angle; It’s not the genre or style, it’s the attitude and delivery. As fans of classic rock, hardcore, punk, death, thrash and black metal, musical inspiration for ‘Get Dead Or Die Trying’ can be found in pretty much any decent guitar-based band of the last 30 years.

The line-up reads like the role call at an alcoholics meeting, Ben McCrow on vocals, Tim Carley on guitar, Gian Pyres on lead guitar, Wilson on bass and former IDF tank unit sergeant Nate Gould on drums.

Since starting life in 1997 under the name ‘Gorerotted’, the band have always done things their way and let the music write itself. They do what they want, when they want to do it. Nothing contrived, no gimmicks, they’re music is honest and from the heart.

Having released 3 albums on Metal Blade and Relapse Records the boys felt it was time for fresh blood and a fresh approach. It was decided, partly as a mark of respect to previous members and for the original idea and motives behind ‘Gorerotted’ that the name should change. The band has been known for many years by friends and fans as “The ‘Rotted” so it was right to choose that as the name.

Doors - 9:00 PM

Tickets - £7 adv

Playing their first UK show in over 8 years and their first Birmingham show EVER, Saturday 6th December BOSS HOG come to ColdRice!!

Boss Hog is the punk blues super group led by the husband and wife duo of ColdRice friends Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez.

Jon and Cristina go way back to Jon's first band Pussy Galore in the eighties and first formed to play a cancellation at CBGB's earning instant notoriety when Cristina performed naked.  Guitarists Jerry Teel and Kurt Wolf, bassist Pete Shore, and drummer Charlie Ondras completed the line-up for 1989's cassette-only Drinkin', Lechin', and Lyin'. In the wake of 1990's Cold Hands, Spencer formed the Blues Explosion, forcing Boss Hog on the backburner; by the time the group returned in 1993 with Girl +, only Martinez and Spencer remained from the original lineup, with ex-Swan Jens Jürgensen assuming bass duties and Hollis Queens joining on drums. The record's success in indie circles resulted in a deal with major label Geffen which yielded a self-titled 1995 LP; little was heard from Boss Hog throughout the remainder of the decade (although Spencer and Martinez had a baby), but in early 2000 the group finally resurfaced with Whiteout, featuring ex-Goats keyboardist Mark Boyce.

Providing support at the request of Boss Hog is ColdRice soul power fanatics COPTER, making their one and only UK appearance until next year.

All this plus the fabulously handsome Coldrice DJs playing rock 'n' roll, punk blues, garage trash, 60s soul electric and eclectic til the early hours. Get involved!

FROG. is a weekly party in the centre of town - two rooms of quality music from residents and guest DJ's playing the best in music; new and old, indie and punk, new wave and no-wave, rock n roll and kitchen sinks... it's got absolutely nothing to do with amphibians, however, every week there is a live band booked for your listening pleasure.

11pm til 4am EVERY FRIDAY@ Barfly - opposite Coach Station
78, Digbeth High St, Entrance on Milk St

For those of you not already acquainted with FROG, it is a massive weekly Party every Saturday at Mean Fiddler, London’s central venue next door to the Astoria. It prides itself in having the best cutting edge bands, that are already synonymous with the DJ’s decks, playing every week. Already a cult clubnight in London and the UK, it has seen bands such as; The View, The Fratellis, Bloc Party, Klaxons, Jamie T, We Are Scientists, Larrikin Love, the Holloways and many more already grace their stage in the past few months. Some people may also remember the Babyshambles’ tour that they organised with The Noisettes and The Holloways in support.

BANG! BANG! DJs will be taking control of the backstage area making this 2 rooms of the Best DJs this side (and the other side) of Watford Gap!

THERE ARE NO ADVANCE TICKETS FOR THESE CLUBNIGHTS. ARRIVE EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!

Plus, there’s a very special DJ set by our friends, The Holloways, Peaches Geldof and local celebrity Emma Scott from Kerrang 105.2FM. That’ll keep things going until 3am.

Live music, played loud and blinding indie tracks to rip up the dancefloor. It’s one beautiful union.

Subculture New Years Eve Party

NEW YEARS EVE! ROCK PARTY with SUBCULTURE

We are pleased to announce that for the first time ever we will be holding a 100% Subculture New Years Eve party on Sunday December 31st.

100% Subculture means no indie at all guaranteed so it is exactly what the core subculture audience want or the biggest night of the year.

The night will be held here at The Barfly with the main room being mainstream rock and the smaller second room being dedicated to harder rock and metal all night.

Tickets are priced at £10 and are available from our online shop (see buy ticket link). Tickets will also be available from Swordfish Records and from Subculture onstage at the Academy every Saturday night from Nov 18th. There is also no booking fee if you get it from Subculture. Usual Barfly club night drinks prices apply so there will be plenty of cheap options available.

Obviously as The Barfly is a smaller venue than the usual Subculture venue there are fewer tickets available so we strongly advise you to get your ticket pretty damn quick so you are not disappointed on the big night.

Also, we are planning to make this a real party to see the new year in so watch out for a few nice surprises on the night and we guarantee you will be smiling when the clock strikes 12!

New Years Eve! Clubnight & Top Acts

+ Intergalactic + Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow + Mistys Big Adventure + Envy and Other Sins

Doors -

Tickets - 10(adv)

Barfly's first New Years Eve in Birmingham is promising to be spectacular! All the Early Bird Tickets have sold out and now the party is really going to heat up, with the final batch of tickets now on sale!

As some of you may be aware, Barfly have only been open in Birmingham since September, and what a few eventful months that has been. We’ve seen some top shows from the likes of Editors, Hundred Reasons, Reuben, Trivium, Goldie Lookin Chain, Nine Black Alps, and Test Icicles, to name but a few… Now, we at Barfly love finding new bands and we’re wearing our hearts on our sleeves this new year by showing our love for two of Birmingham’s most promising bands of 2006. Misty’s Big Adventure along with Envy & Other Sins are set to bring Britain’s focus back onto a City that truly is steeped in a genuine love of music. If you really don’t trust us (yet) then have a look at what some other good folks are saying:

MISTYS BIG ADVENTURE

"An utterly eccentric dollop of smile inducing fun...grinningly good"
- The Fly

“For those looking for a more traditional cuppa Copey, we heartily recommend the magical mind-bendiness of Misty's Big Adventure. No doubt about it, Grandmaster Gareth and his far-out Brummie nontet's new LP, The Black Hole, is the best Julian pastiche EVER." - (Rolling Stone)

ENVY & OTHER SINS

“Envy & Other Sins are the Monty Python's Flying Circus of rock 'n' roll. Visually, they're a gang of eccentric mentalists.

Braces? Check. Neckerchief? Check. Early 1900's 'Biggles' aviation headgear? Full house. Throw in some fairy lights and a Mary Poppins vintage coat stand and you're halfway to their day-glo sepia Bethlem.

Musically, however, EAOS are the dog's bollocks. Cheeky, catchy, Dexys-meets-Talking Heads huge, stomping, rock 'n' roll. Join the fun.” – The Fly

“…from the bands visual image i dropped the phrase 'world of twist' into my response. Well, never judge a book etc. This is full on prog pop with totally over the top instrumentation and all manner of excellence as well as a totally radio friendly hook - the barking mad full length 5 minute version is the one to kill for. look for the limited 10" debut.” – Ireallylovemusic.co.uk

Add into the equation our Barfly Resident DJs providing you with the anthems to dance the night away.... indie/alt/electro/beats/punk/rock we have all bases covered to ensure you bring the New Year in, in style!

Johnny Truant
Johnny Truant take their name after a criminal drug fiend. Their not a fashion band. They're not going to be compared to any of the trite nonsense that's out there now. They don't write songs to put on mix-love-tapes to your girlfriend. They don't wear makeup, paint their fingernails, or sing about rainbows and sunshine.

Johnny Truant roar from the starting blocks like an enraged cheetah, before abruptly curtailing a tangled web of riffs and rhythmic tics and descending into a sonic swamp of blackest ambience. They share a sound not to dissimilar to US extremists Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch. With a new album being produced by Killswitch AXE man, Adam Dutkiewiez, they combine hardcore, noise and grooves, and now and then, chuck in a melody or two. Having recently toured the UK and Europe with Emanuel and Alexisonfire. JT are back and ready to make your ears bleed (NO EXCUSES!)...

Ten years later, still a hip-hop slave. A prehistoric b-boy makin’ beats in my cave"

DJ Format AKA Matt Ford's debut album “Music For The Mature B-Boy” is one of the slowburn success stories of 2002. An album of soulful, funk fuelled hip hop packed with infectious beats and lyrical dexterity, it delivered in spades on the promise of his early releases for Mo' Wax and Bomb Hip Hop. Received with quiet acclaim in the press it quickly became a word of mouth triumph, going on to establish itself as one of the most successful debut artist album’s in UK hip hop/alternative urban/dance scene. The campaign was successful for a number of reasons not least it’s supporting batch of three incredible music video’s all directed by then unknown Ruben Fleischer. The most famous of these will undoubtedly be the rap and breakdancing costumed animals of ‘We Know Something You Don’t Know’ featuring the vocals of Chali 2na and Akil of Jurassic 5 - played out by a shark and tiger respectively on the big screen it is an unforgettable piece of feel good hip hop. “Music For The...” also led to Matt supporting Jurassic 5 on their European tour, and through subsequent touring in 2003 establishing Format & Abdominal as one of the hottest live hip hop tickets in town culminating in triumphant appearances at the Reading & Leeds festivals of 2004 and worldwide touring taking in the whole of Europe, North America and (most recently) Australia.

It’s time. Armed with sublime songs from their up-coming brand new album Make It Happen, Nizlopi are bursting out of the studio and taking to the road to get people up onto their feet. With their thrillingly intimate live shows Nizlopi are a revelation, a musical revolution, set to the soaring melodies of Luke Concannon’s powerful vocals (Tracy Chapman meets The Streets), and the dirty beats of John James Parker’s jazzed up double-bass and human beat box. ‘When were you in a gig last where the people smiled so broad that the reflection from their teeth contributed to the acoustics?’ bbc ‘The most exciting hip- hop, acoustic, double-bass shit going down’ Mojo Collections.

Signed to their own label, provocative and inspiring, their groove-driven beat-based songs are a mix of soul, folk, jazz, hip hop and everything in between. Get up, stand up. Love the place you live. Shake the thing your mamma gave ya.

The Suffrajets
In the current trend of the Libertines look–a–like bands it is always a very good surprise to find something different. It is even more unexpected when the surprise appears under the name of The Suffrajets: four punk rock ladies, angry, yet sweet, willing to rock your night out with a guitar solo. More interesting is that one of these ladies, once upon a time, used to drum in a band called Babyshambles.... Now if you’re imagining these girls to sound like them, just because Gemma Clarke used to jam with Pete, well, you are wrong!

The amazing sound of the band is created by combining two voices with two striding guitars and a reassuring bassist, though perfectly fitting in the chaos, giving to Suffrajets a unique sound.

Their live performance will blow you away. If it doesn’t maybe there’s something wrong with you. These girls transmit so much energy you must fall in love with their music.

Twinkling in the night sky of the shining Montreal music scene, famously home to Arcade Fire, The Dears and Stars’ friends and sometime collaborators Broken Social Scene, Stars produce delicate, sophisticated, fun, pretty, warm music that recalls “those fifteen seconds in your life when you kissed someone and it broke your heart”. They claim that in writing current album Set Yourself On Fire they were aiming for a straight-up sex record, but ended up writing a sex and death and robots record – in Stars, everything that starts off simple blows up big, ornate and rich. Don’t miss the soft revolution as Stars sparkle at the Barfly.

Followers of Badly Drawn Boy and Ben Folds would do well to keep an eye on newcomer BC Camplight, AKA Brian Christinzio, a one man band extravaganza bringing together the Belle and Sebastian kookiness and certain wistfulness of The Thrills with all too familiar vocally led odes. But his disregard of blatant pop overtones in favour of the colours of his greater influences – the likes of composers Gershwin and Bacharach - creates a more subtle and atypical sound, branding him as much more than a simple clone.

Maximum Pow presents

The Gift feat Rick Buckler (The Jam)

+ Pope (The Chords’ Chris Pope and Buddy Ascott)

Doors - 8:00 PM

Tickets - 12(adv)

Rick Buckler was one of the finest drummers of his generation and his band ‘The Jam’ were arguably the most powerful outfit to emerge from the New Wave scene. Throughout the late seventies and early eighties ‘The Jam’ would voice the hopes, dreams and aspirations of Britain’s post punk youth and such was the emotional impact of their music that the reverberations can still be felt today with bands like Hard-Fi and the Arctic Monkeys, to name but two, citing the band as a major influence.

After an interim of over twelve years, Buckler, inspired by the current crop of upstarts and buoyed by his loyal fan base returned to the stage in September 2005 with his band ’The Gift’, the name of which is both a nod to the final Jam album, yet also signifies that it is his own personal gift back to his fan base for their unerring loyalty.

Enlisting the talents of ex Maximum High musicians Russell Hastings (vocals/guitar) and bassist Dave Moore, Buckler and his band have been playing Jam songs, (some receiving their first live airings for over a quarter of a century) which has both enabled the group to establish themselves within the live circuit and also allowed them to hone their skills as a powerful three piece. Headline news in the NME has resulted in sell out shows in London and the recent spate of warm up concerts played to emotional and euphoric audiences has steeled the band for a major UK tour in the New Year. Impressed by the group’s credentials, keen ambition, and stunning live performances, Ludwig Drums, Merc clothing, Lonsdale and All Mod Icon Magazine have all added their names as official sponsors of ‘The Gift’. Buckler’s return to the music scene has already been described by Scootering Magazine as ‘a Richter Scale shaking bang’ and by All Mod Icon Magazine as ‘the rightful return of one of our finest and best loved drummers’.

JR Ewing

JR Ewing
JR Ewing are 5 restless young men from Oslo, Norway. Comparable to bands like Drive Like Jehu, Antioch Arrow, The Who, Shellac, etc. with an updated, technically-minded twist, the group has released their 2nd album, "Ride Paranoia", on GSL .

The label has proven itself time and time again as unafraid to move out of their niche markets to branch out into something more interesting and innovative. With JR Ewing, the label has taken a chance on a group of Scandinavians pushing something far more complex and interesting than the pop hooks of the Hives. The result is an intense record with a clear and distinct sound, an assault on mainstream "emo" vomit as well as redundant underground hardcore.

But there is hope for the traditional lineup of hardcore bands- don’t get me wrong. Just look at J.R Ewing. Two guitars. A bass. Drums. A vocalist. 13 songs that are over in little more than half an hour. It’s all here. The brilliance and intensity of a band on a mission to pulverize eardrums through the tropes of traditional hardcore, but different somehow. Perhaps it’s more melody? Or the fact that they’re Norwegian? Who knows? And more importantly, when the music is this good, who cares?

Humanzi
Hailing from the inner city suburbs of working class Dublin and born into a world of say-nothing popstars, Humanzi are your antidote to all the celebrity chasing groups of pretty boys that pass for rock n roll bands these days.

Realising that they were onto something pretty damn special they came up with a manifesto as brilliantly simple as it was simply brilliant: 'Give it a year and if we're not signed, we'll head off to Tibet to become monks.'

SHITDISCO
In their own words, "SHITDISCO are a band from Glasgow. They like the fun. They are a band of circumstance, not style. To a man they prefer dancing to mincing. You can dance to them too if you like. Otherwise you can watch them dance while they play their music. They have previously played in abandoned railway tunnels, portacabins, boys' toilets and the odd club now and then. The band consists of two basses, one guitar, a keyboard and drums. Lyrical themes veer from intellectual violence and lateness to being too hot and Soviet gabba parties. Their music is informed by Dick Dale and Bobby Orlando and everyone in between. As long as you can dance to it."

If you like The Cribs, The Libertines, or even Arctic Monkeys, then you will love Last Gang In Town. The Yorkshire quartet have been supporting said bands, and more over the past year. Maff & Ritchie from The Blueskins formed a band with Kristian and Matt and about 2 hours after their first rehearsal, they supported Arctic Monkeys. Wakefield seems to be a hive of activity these days - Yorkshire has awoken, so to speak... Ahem.

Formed on the Isle of White in 2004, The Jackson Analogue produce magnificently effervescent Hammond ( that’s a BFO organ to you and me) driven rock, cross-stitched with motor-city blues and soul, all laid bare over grizzled Kings Of Leon esque vocals. Almost a more angry Blues Brothers if you will – and the analogy really does work, the two vocalists of the 5 piece are, in fact, brothers. Having cultivated a small but ardent fanbase from a tour supporting fellow Isle of Wight-ers The Bees, and touted by new music heavyweights Zane Lowe and Claire Sturgess, the horizon’s looking pretty rosy. Just leave off the ‘Jackson 5’ jokes eh?

Two girls, one boy, and a decrepit Casio keyboard. They played a gig on the night she returned and fell in love all over again. A lovely guy called Whiskas booked them loads of brilliant gigs in Leeds. The Research saved up £60 and bought a bass guitar. Then, when they could afford it they bought a snare drum. The bass drum and the hi-hats are still borrowed. They can fit all their equipment in the back of a Ford Escort Estate along with themselves and one extra passenger at the same time.

65daysofstatic

+ The Morning After Girls + The Big Bang

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - 8adv

65daysofstatic
65 Days of Static are a band who cannot exactly be pigeonholed into one genre. Both the media and their fans have described them as having an original sound, almost completely unto themselves. The band describe their music as “sporadic” sighting their influences as bands like At The Drive In, the Deftones and New Order. Their first full length album, The Falls of Math, is a mix of danceable post hardcore(?!) and controlled rock noise. Mathematicians they are not, loud, energetic and most of the time vocals free, they are.

The morning after girls started playing in and around Melbourne, Australia almost three years ago, and now reside in the city of Sydney. Their engulfing stage presence and hazy melodies pull you right into the world of the morning after — a moment they characterize by a dreamy grogginess, a discord of transient yet striking memories and sounds, nostalgia; a yearning to go back to last night…

The morning after girls have written songs that stand as an illustration of a band’s journey to. It’s own brand of psyche-pop. When seeing the band live, their audience can feel an influence spawned from the time of Warhol’s Factory. This is a band that really does not fit in anywhere, and for that they receive our warm embrace. It’s elegantly wasted psychedelic pop fuzzy rock with obligatory raucous and anguished vocals that retain a smoldering edge…and that warrants repetitive listens.

Scorching, deafening, powerful gut-punch rock 'n' roll band from the wild west midlands. Ladies and Gentleman... The Big Bang !!
A group of three individuals united by the desire to create rock music than can be brutally simple and simply brutal. Make your mood, bang your head and shake your ass!

Cult of Luna
Cult of Luna emerged from the infamous hardcore act Eclipse. When the band split up, vocalist Klas Rydberg along with guitarist Johannes Persson had new ideas how to explore music further on. A new band had come to light, soon to be called Cult of Luna. After some member hunting and rehearsals, Cult of Luna had some ideas on the sound; raw, heavy and emotional. After the success of the first album, Earache records contacted Cult of Luna and wanted to sign a record deal. After some negotiations during the spring of 2002, CoL finally signed the deal. Immediately after that CoL entered Tonteknik studios to record their second album "The Beyond".

"The Beyond" was released in early 2003, to critical acclaim. Cult of Luna proved categorically that they were now ready to bring their soundscapes to a much wider audience. After the release of "The Beyond", Cult Of Luna toured Sweden with The Haunted and the UK with Isis.

iForward Russia!
"From the off, the four members of iForward, Russia! rip against each other; fractured and percussive guitar stabs are cradled by the most pounding rhythm section imaginable. It’s liquid dance in punk masquerade. They are the spiked ball on the end of a giant mace, but sharpened sharper than razors. The singer spazzes out relentlessly, hypnotically, voice never waning as he wails and hollers. A mega-quick banshee, a perfect frontman. My sobriety is irrelevant, I’m fucked on music and stomping my feet" Drowned In Sound.
With a review like that what more do you want.

"Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies are clever, original - and sadistically unpredictable." Kerrang!
"YMSS sound like absolutely bugger-all else out there... No band in the world comes close to matching YMSS's thirst for the deranged; nobody can hold a torch to their genre-splicing glory. Prefixes come and go in YMSS's world - post, prog, whatever - but none stick. Only one simple word can successfully clamp itself to this eight-legged beast of a band as it sprints into previously unexplored musical territories: brilliant." Drowned In Sound

The Scare are a 5 piece band from QLD, Australia and currently residing in Birmingham, UK. Since forming in 2004 the band has released 2 EP's and has already supported an array of world class & diverse artists such as Pretty Girls Make Graves, Blood Brothers, Wolfmother, Kisschasy, Les Savy Fav, Alexisonfire, The Morning After Girls & have played on Festivals like Homebake, Taste Of Chaos and Come Together.

Send More Paramedics
Everyone knows that the 80’s music revival is back, but with a slightly different take on it. Whether we are going to end up embarrassed about it all over again a few years down the line is yet to be determined, but there is one aspect of this revival that has not been touched upon as much as new wave, and that’s thrash metal. The nu-thrash metal of today is not just a mix of metal, hardcore and punk, but also zombies. Yes that’s right, zombies! The Leeds band Send More Paramedics introduced this sub genre with their debut album, A Feast for the Fallen in 2002.

Since then, the band has earned a cult following of others who are “consumed with an unholy desire to devour living human brains”. Umm, right… So if you love performances that include blood, severed heads, and like Hannibal Lechter know how to enjoy a good brain every once in a while, then Send More Paramedics is the band for you!

------------------------------------------

Heavy, hard hitting, dirty guitar chords thrust you into the forefront of West Midlands sludge and rollers Godsize…To the be introduced to a singer with more front than Jordan to slam you along to the bands appeal and exhausting on but mostly off stage antics.

------------------------------------------

With their hardworking, no-bull philosophy, Out For Blood are set to establish themselves as one of the finest underground metal bands to come out of the midlands.

**SOLD OUT** The View
THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT

The View are on fire...! Writing in a pubs back room close to their housing estate, The Bayview gave the band their name and allowed them to get about making it as a young band in the real world. Considering they were all born after 1986 it may be considered odd by some that they state their songwriting influences as Crowded House, the Beatles & Squeeze. These self taught, spontaneous kids casually blow away other established bands at every subsequent gig, and have gathered massive local respect. The maniacal fans loyally followed, closely attached to the band. The View have arrived just in time to give us back true rock & roll spirit with a basis in great songwriting. In this release they have provided a perfect four-piece soundtrack to everyday life. With Coming Down, the band kick the door down and introduce themselves with a first take blast of angst before moving onto the anthemic Streetlights, the live performance of which regularly attracts a march toward the stage by a gathering of fans with arms aloft.

The Allies musically possess a hybrid sound that combines all of the best elements found in this countries musical heritage along with the contemporary edge inherent in recent trends towards the live guitar sound, melodic hook and powerful lyrics. Their music combines strong melodies and the raw energy of classic guitar bands with intelligent production and arrangements. The result is a unique combination of upbeat hits rich in vocal harmonies, raw yet melodic guitar lines. The range of influences brought to the mix by the band members comes through in the music, both in style and arrangement. Initially playing low-key support slots at intimate venues in the area, the response and massive interest in the band has secured them a series of headline gigs at some of the areas top venues.

Escobar have been around in various guises since 2004. Having spent time honing our sound, we started getting serious in February 2005, appointed a manager and began evolving into the band you recognise today. Were named after the FBIs former most wanted man Pablo Escobar.
We are all based in and around Birmingham and as our logo shows (the Columbian flag with the skyline of Birmingham super-imposed) are proud of our 2nd City roots.
Expect an infectious blend of guitar driven indie rock and Roll with a clued up attitude, reflected in the lyrics. These lyrics, combined with the catchy guitar riffs, make for a sound that is hard to categorise. The songs hit the heart and the head and reflect where we're from.
Escobar are In The Know

The Abbots are a three man outfit. They are an indie/rock 'n' roll band who pride themselves on using day to day life to inspire songwriting with undoubted influence from the Stone Roses, Hendrix and adding to that the balls and swagger of Gallagher brothers... and out of the mixer hitting you in the face with bass lines and lead riffs The Who would be proud of you get.... The Abbots!

Rising from the ashes of bands as diverse as Innate, Tenfoldtruth, DAWN FUCKIN RAZOR, Farfallen and Delerium Tremenze, State of Serenity are here to tear it up.

Three founder members of one of the most weirdly creative bands in indiedom, The Beta Band (frontman Gordon Anderson aka Lone Pigeon; drummer BB drummer Robin Jones and DJ/keyboardist John MacLean) in a bizarre splice of atmospheres and musical styles; taking winning melodies and strapping them to rocketing pop hooks. From brooding galactic-bluegrass to life-affirming psychedelia, the Betas might have been this with Ben Folds, Prince and Beck on board. Parallels could be drawn between Anderson and Syd Barrett, both geniuses blighted by psychiatric problems but the difference, of course, is that Anderson has come back - albeit as an Alien. They don’t make them like this anymore; highly recommended! .

From 1,900 entries, 21 were shortlisted and had a chance to play in front of a panel of expert judges including Xfm’s Marsha and Head of Fallout Recordings, Nick McEwen in a tour of universities around the country. The task of choosing the bands was a difficult one, but the winning bands were London based Mendicant and Leeds based Buffalo ‘77. The third band, chosen by fans on the 3 First Cut website, was Manchester based Finka. The final three bands will now  tour with The Rumble Strips, playing three dates at Barfly venues in Glasgow (26th April), Liverpool (2nd May) and Birmingham (3rd May), before playing the final at London’s ULU with the Fratelli’s. The winning band will band will be given an unprecedented package to help launch their careers, including a single release on Fallout Recordings. Hailing from Devon, The Rumble Strips are four young men walking to a different beat to the rest of crowd.  After the run-away success of debut single 'alarm clock' The Rumble Strips return with 'Motorcycle' - a track destined to be the indie anthem of 2007. Penning huge, anthemic songs of pounding brass, piano, drums and singer Charlie Waller's amazing voice: The Rumble Strips are one of the most hotly tipped new bands for 2007. The Rumble Strips are a truly special group: Pure, sad and romantic - writing huge, pop songs tapped directly from the heart - whilst looking and sounding like no one else.  Theirs are songs that strike a chord with the masses, whilst remaining enigmatic and standing alone from the crowd. Tickets are available for £5 from 3 Stores or a limited number on the door. The Bluetones

"The Bluetones have been on our record players and in our ears for ten years. Now with their 5th studio album simply titled, ‘The Bluetones’, it seems the band are being somewhat, reborn. The new album is full of magical moments and a even the odd snippet of a ballad, reminiscent of ‘The Fountainhead’, and ‘Slack jaw’ as well as the typical sing-a-long styles of ‘If…’. With a BBC Sessions album due for release on 26th February, that accumulates live sessions with the legendary John Peel, amongst others from almost 10 years of archives, getting reacquainted with The Bluetones just got a whole lot easier".

This London four piece's frantic, twitching, spiky guitar pop looks to the new wave sound of the late 70s and combines it with a distinctly modern twist to create something special.
Citing The Police, Elvis Costello and Paul Simon as their major influences, Circuits are a new and different proposition.
With their Morse code like guitar, thick rolling bass lines and powerful, driving drums, Circuits are not just another rabble of shoe gazers or indie-pop wannabees.

Escobar expect an infectious blend of guitar driven indie rock with a street attitude. The songs hit the heart and the head and reflect where they're from. No "keeping it real", Escobar are real .

An Albatross (US)

We are bad motherfuckers inciting a feel-good riot. Do what pleases you, and let your hair hang down! We are An Albatross, but we are more than that - we are you! Calling all Lazer Vikings abroad - we have heard your call and it is our mission to gather the like-minded, the beautiful and gifted humans together to facilitate a nonstop musical orgasm until we pass through the jeweled gates of Rock and Roll Valhalla!

Hips Unite, are straight out of Birmingham.
We just want to play shows.
We all love Gem so be nice or we will track you down and play outside your house

Sounding not unlike the fall of troy, The Hubble Constant bring a number of influences to a great sound. Think Tool's mindset, the instrumental precision of opeth, the erratic energy of every time i die and a very LA garage-rock vocal run through an amp. With an abstract name like Hubble you get what you'd expect: strange music. Diverse sounds like reggae rhythms, crashing crescendos and whispered vocals make this a particularly eerie and intruiging band.

It's hard to pin point exactly what it is that makes Random Conflict stand out from all the other metalcore bands out there. With blast beat sections giving way to 2 step beats, and then into noise style breakdowns, the band may not be reinventing the wheel, but with clever, original riffs, Random Conflict are set to make waves next year.

With groove laden riffs, thunderous drumming and two vocalists competing for attention, Random Conflict play intricate metalcore with precision and a passion that lacks from many of the big boys in this genre. With songs like "His Glory Laid To Wake" shifting from deathcore to hardcore in a flash without missing a beat, despite being young, this band are already proving their worth.

Ghosts

Freshly signed to Atlantic Records and described my industry bible Music Week as sexy, suave & fantastically tuneful, you can be forgiven for not knowing too much about this band. But trust us, there is a real underground buzz going on and you really need to be in at the beginning on this ... Ghosts at Birmingham Barfly.

Digesting influences down the ages from Hendrix, Doors, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, U2, Smiths, Nirvana and all the usual indie suspects of the 90/00s, Prospect Lane spit them out sounding nothing like any in the process. The band was formed at 7.25pm on a spring day in 2005 at the Sharmans Cross public house on Prospect Lane in a suburb of Birmingham, consisting of Sparky (axe), Mikey (vox), Nathan (keys), Josh (drums) and Pat (bass), If success for Prospect Lane is inevitable, it would only be through the integrity of being 'one's self', strength of their songs and energy of their gigs and not through the boomerang hoops of self-hype and depravity of over style.

The Hoi Polloi have been together for 3 years. The Band consists of 4 musicians from the blackcountry in the West Midlands Who have locked themselves away in a rehearsal room until they felt that the time was right to try and gain exposure and industry attention. The Band have a huge sound but are also able to create an ambience that can cross over to a wide audience. The band have produced acomplished recordings but should be seen live for music lovers to fully appreciate the passion, sweat and raw emotion that this band delivers from song to song. All of the The Hoi Polloi's Music is learned through life and played from the heart!!

Ben Calvert;
With the band there are songs of seaside jaunts, budget wine, supermarkets, amyl nitrate, and forest lynchings: a sound akin to blur circa the eponymous album. On my own I'm in a post-folk mode, singing of travel, lost-love and musings in city parks.
I've supported Hamell On Trial, Jim Bob, Chris T-T, Stuffy and the Fuses, and I've appeared on the same bill as Tunng, and The Incredible String Band at Moseley Folk Festival.

"A strange Syd Barrett/Roy Harper hybrid is Ben Calvert. Lovely, melodic, melancholia. This is music and words for the disenchanted and is as good as a big bag of really good things."Get Rhythm.

After befriending Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison whilst on tour, guitarist Acey Slade quickly realised that the two shared a love for bands like the New York Dolls and The Damned. Slade was promptly recruited for The Murderdolls, Joey's other band on Roadrunner Records. After 2 years of solid world wide touring, the Murderdolls officially went on hold in January 2004. Acey wasted no time in putting Trash Light Vision into motion. The first recruit was Steve Haley with whom Acey had kept in contact with over the years. Next up was old room-mate and fellow Porn Peddler Rags. "We just got together to hang out to talk about old times and not only was he still playing, but he had a drummer (Len Thomas). I wanted people that were not afraid to take chances and had a ton of charisma and most of all were friends."

With the line-up complete, the band started playing in New York and Philadelphia incessantly. Word quickly spread about their explosive live show. A UK tour was booked and Trash Light Vision received a four 'K' review in Kerrang magazine for their London Underworld show. To further facilitate their cause of bringing Trashy Punk/Rock n'Roll to the masses, the band all moved into their rehearsal spot (the Trash Can) where they have a DIY ethic. There, they make their own patches, CD's and T-shirts. "We have this weird lifestyle that combines Guns and Roses debauchery with the Minor Threat work ethic." They have toured Europe with Stiff Little Fingers as well as The Buzzcocks and shared the stage with The UK Subs, The Wildhearts, and Electric Frankenstein. Although the band has roots in classic Punk and Rock, they are far from 'Retro'.

"Raw, dirty and uncompromising; a lethal, intoxicating blow of crunch and color, leading the next wave of rock with a blistering yell." Nicole Smith, Village Voice, New York City

"If the Dead Boys grew up around the corner from Three Mile Island, they would be Trashlight Vision." Rodney Anonomous, The Dead Milkmen

Boredoms

The Boredoms were formed in early 1986 in Osaka, Japan, by vocalist Yamatsuka Eye (who later went by Yamantaka Eye, then Yamataka Eye, and sometimes just eYe). Eye had been a member of the noise-rock band the Hanatarash, as had drummer Taketani; the rest of the original lineup featured guitarist Tabata Mara and bassist Hosoi. It quickly disintegrated; first, Taketani was let go in favor of Yoshikawa Toyohito, then Hosoi was replaced by Hira (sometimes Hilah), and finally Mara -- who quit to join Zeni Geva -- was replaced by Yamamoto Seiichi (aka Yama-Motor). Thus constituted, the Boredoms recorded their debut three-song EP, Anal by Anal, in 1986; their first full-length, Osozeran No Stooges Kyo ("The Stooges Craze in Osozeran"), followed in 1988, with both records later collected on Onanie Bomb Meets the Sex Pistols. Yoshimi Yokota (aka Yoshimi P-WE) became the band's new drummer and first female member in 1988; Yoshikawa switched to percussion and quit the following year, replaced first by Hasegawa Chu and then by ATR. Following Eye's work with John Zorn's avant-garde Naked City ensemble, the Boredoms' second album, Soul Discharge, was issued in the U.S. by Shimmy Disc in 1990; though some found them pointlessly abrasive, overall the record's crazed attack made them a hip name to drop in underground circles. The buzz surrounding the Boredoms culminated in major-label deals with Warner Japan and Reprise in the U.S., the first fruits of which were 1993's Pop Tatari, for which Yoshikawa returned as co-lead vocalist and synthesizer player. The follow-up Chocolate Synthesizer was released in the U.S. in 1995 (a year later than Japan), and the band supported it by playing a string of main stage dates on that year's Lollapalooza tour.

An Evening with NECRO 14+

An Evening with NECRO 14+
am a singer/songwriter from the characteristic land of Essex. I front the melodic rock band 'InMe', drum with progressive metallers 'Centiment' and make electronic sounds as 'A Devil's Devil'.

I developed my interest for music at a very young age, mostly due to my father's own musical passion. One of my earliest memories is me waking every morning to the sounds of my father's piano medleys. Music surrounds my family tree so I suppose part of this was meant to be. I absolutely love putting my creative thoughts into music as well as lyrics as I have always been fascinated with using words expressively.

I also love being in front of an audience, I don't know if this is masochistic (I generally purposefully make a fool of myself in public) or whether I have some strange desire to show strangers my music! Either way, it is very fulfilling doing what I do and I wouldn't trade it for anything...no matter how much a "real job" can pay. This is very early days but eventually I will release a solo album, but in the mean time I regularly put up random demos or put out D.I.Y EPs which are available from here. It was quite daunting for me to begin with as this is rather different to what 'InMe' does so thankyou to everyone for all the kind words and support.

I have played thousands of shows during my life and as a result will probably be deaf before 40 but I suppose every career has it's occupatioal hazards! I love interacting with an audience and making people feel a part of the show, although I hate compliments I do love the sound of genuine laughter and people's natural smiles.

I run a modest, intimate acoustic night every sunday night in ONeills, Brentwood, Essex kicking off around 8.30pm. Joining me is Hadleigh Ford (see top friends) and between the two of us we try to make sure the night happens every week without fail. I have been running this for nearly two years now as Brentwood's music scene has not been allowed to breathe for a long time now. We have a variety of guests who perform too and a nice little selection of regulars which gives the night a friendly, social vibe fitting the mood of the night. Great for a quiet night out after a heavy weekend.

Anyway, I am starting to sound a bit soppy now which directly goes against the way I am in a pub with my mates and my Essex heritage so I'll get to the full stop.

Jack Savoretti

23 year old Jack Savoretti was a late developer. He didn’t pick up a guitar until he was 16. Half Italian, half English, he moved around Europe as a child, wound up at an American school in Switzerland where he picked up an accent he describes as “transatlantic mutt”. The only thing that interested him was poetry.  Jack bummed around for a couple of years, composing “a reggae song one day, a country song the next. What I sounded like depended on what kind of mood I was in.” He rarely wrote the songs down. “If I don’t remember it, it’s obviously not worth finishing,” is his theory. He was playing, “two or three hours a day, just walking around with a guitar, finding who I was in music. I’m always looking for the moment in a song. It should be a great read, not just a three minute shot but a whole movie with an incredibly complicated twist that leaves you thinking for days.” Signed, on the basis of his demo, to London based independent label De Angelis Records Jack headed into the studio to record his debut album ‘Between The Minds’. His first single ‘Without’, released at the back end of 2006, garnered excellent reviews and Radio 2 support. In addition to playing several solo shows – including a packed media showcase at Ronnie Scott’s - Jack was invited by Shawn Colvin to support her on her European tour to close 2006.
2007 started with a flurry with Jack’s second single ‘Dreamers’ added to the Radio 2 A List followed by an invitation to perform on TOTP2.

Taking cues from The Byrds, Neil Young and Flaming Lips silliness, they may not have listened to anything after 1979; but it's been good enough for slots with Paulo Nutini, Richard Ashcroft and His Bobness so far. A band to fall in love with, then, but they're not without balls, either, having supported Babyshambles and thrown balloons to the audience whilst sending blissful acoustic-led pop out over the heads of most of the 'Pete, Pete' chanting apes. You'll really REALLY like this band!

Captain 14+!!
In a musical era dominated by bands who seem to exist solely within highly specific camps - be it art rock, New York-style indie posturing or something similarly unappealing - Captain are a glorious anomaly. A rum bunch of five distinctly individual people, their music sounds quintessentially of itself. Consequently, Captain are very nearly unique, 2006's most handsome black sheep. "I've never felt particularly part of the scene," says the band's singer Rik Flynn, "whichever scene we happen to be talking about. It's not something I've ever set out to sidestep, it's just the way things are. Of course, I'm aware that this is something that can work against you, but right now, it seems to be working for us." He takes the cigarette he has been earnestly puffing away on from his mouth and blows a self-satisfied smoke ring. "And that pleases me enormously." Captain's music is joyful, clattering, full of divergent moodswings, the jubilant crescendoes of male/female vocal sparring and, just occasionally, the trill parp of a trumpet. Above all else, as Rik Flynn will tell you himself, the band's music is, "hopeful, emotional and euphoric. Whether it's melancholy or we're singing stories about people dying of cancer, we still want to cheer everybody up." And that they do with no little flair. Their debut album, ‘This is Hazelville’, produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC) is a triumph, a record possessing the combustible energy of Arcade Fire with the theatrical thrum of Flaming Lips and the sheer exuberance of a six year-old anticipating Christmas. You may well have already heard their debut single Frontline. Well, its bug-eyed oh-oh-OH!s are typical of the band's ability to hypnotise. This is wonderfully involving music.

From the off, the four members of iForward Russia! rip against each other; fractured and percussive guitar stabs are cradled by the most pounding rhythm section imaginable. It’s liquid dance in punk masquerade. They are the spiked ball on the end of a giant mace, but sharpened sharper than razors. The singer spazzes out relentlessly, hypnotically, voice never waning as he wails and hollers. A mega-quick banshee, a perfect frontman. My sobriety is irrelevant, I’m fucked on music and stomping my feet - Drowned In Sound.

Tom McRae and The Hotel Cafe

Doors - 7:30 PM

Tickets - £14

TOM MCRAE is a British singer-songwriter. His eponymous first album was released in 2000 on DB Records/BMG. His second album 'Just Like Blood' was released in 2003 on BMG. Album three, 'ALL Maps Welcome', was released in 2005 on Sony/BMG.

What is The Hotel Café Tour? The tour is named after the L.A venue where the songwriters met, hanging out and performing in the tiny bar, sharing ideas, and helping each other get their music out into the world. Gathering together their resources the musicians took to the road, and following a successful tour of the States, Tom McRae (an LA resident and regular at the Hotel Café in 2004) brought the gang to the UK in 2005. The reaction from his fans, and a run of sold out shows, convinced Tom to try it again this year.

Who’s Playing? The show is a revue format, featuring 5 artists and Tom, plus a different “special guest” each night. Listed below, the artists take turns playing brief sets of two or three songs, with the house band joining in over the course of the show, and the evening ends with stage full of musicians singing and playing together in an informal and celebratory fashion.   “ It’s like a travelling festival, but on a much more intimate scale. It’s unlike any other gig you’ll go to. The rapport between musicians is amazing, and the broad scope of music on offer has something for everyone. It’s really a party atmosphere”, says Tom – who hosts the evening as well as performing solo and with the house band. “It’s not about me touring with five support acts, as there are no real “headliners”… it’s more about me introducing my audience to a bunch of great new acts, as well as getting the chance to maybe try out some of my new songs and enjoy a slightly more relaxed and informal evening.”

Why Tom? Tom lived in L.A in 2004 while working on a record, where he frequently took time out to perform at the Hotel Café, where he quickly became friends with many of the local artists. “Cary Brothers (who’s music has featured on The ‘Garden State’ soundtrack, and many other movies and tv shows) was the first to spot the potential of us as a loose collective”, says Tom, “and he was instrumental in organising the first tour. It was such a great experience for musicians and audiences, I felt I had to try and bring some of those players to Europe”.

What’s Special About The Hotel Café? Just ask the people who have passed through it’s doors, either to sit and watch emerging talent, or even to join in – often just after they’ve finished their own show across town. Pete Townshend, KT Tunstall, Badly Drawn Boy, Damien Rice, Aqualung, and Patty Griffin are among just some of the names to have played recently at The Hotel Café.  “It became an after show hang-out for musicians, as well as the place to go to see the next big thing”, says Tom.  The Hotel Café has also put on shows at major film festivals, including the prestigious Sundance festival in Utah, as well as musical festivals such as South by Southwest in Texas, and CMJ in New York. The Future of Live Music:

“The more the music business shrinks and the less it has to offer musicians, the more you will see people ganging together to help each other tour and promote their music”, says Tom. “I think projects like the Hotel Café are the future, and they’re also so much fun they provide a great night out and a great way to discover new music”.

Cut Off Your Hands / Cazals (Co-Headline Tour)

Cut Off Your Hands (COYH) play an infectious, skittering, art-influenced brand of proto-punk indie rock. Since its inception in early 2006 this New Zealand four-piece has been riding high on a wave of critical acclaim and industry attention. Bouncing off each other with poptastic melodies, jagged guitars and jerky stop start rhythmic patterns you’d be encouraged to think of Split Enz unhinged covering Gang of Four songs to get a real idea of the brilliant musical head space COYH occupy. With their brilliant debut EP Shaky Hands released through Speak n Spell Records in July 2006 to riotous applause in both Australia and NZ the band have spent the best part of the last year on a plane, tour bus or stage supporting the likes of Pony Up, Love Is All, You Am I and We Are Scientists amongst a slew of amazing headline shows of their own. Currently holed up in London, COYH continue to rack up a number of memorable performances, with each bettering the last.

”Like the Stooges playing Strokes songs and hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, this garage-rock foursome brought hype and hyper-enthusiastic indie rock to the party”

-NME ‘What everyone else was talking about’ SxSW review. (UK)

“To call their show spastic would be an understatement. The whole band shakes like a Jell-o mold.”

-Pitchfork. (USA) “Fresh of face, these young teeth-cutters from New Zealand hit with the pop energy of Hot Hot Heat, the angular bouncing madness of Les Savy Fav, and slow down occasionally to the pace of The Hives. A tightly wound troupe of indie idealists who believe punk’s not dead – again”

-Drowned in Sound. (UK)“From now on songs will be no longer than 2.20, guitars will skittle, rhythm will stab and everything will dance, fast.” -VICE Magazine. (Australia)

CAZALS

They've known Pete Doherty since they were boys, and have toured with Babyshambles. 2. On account of living in London and - y'know - knowing how to dress well, some people think they're fashonistas; 3. All five of 'em used to live together. In Whitechapel; 4. A couple of them made cameo appearances in Nathan Barley. 5. They used to put on all night warehouse parties - most notably Cazalaid, organised to raise money after ALL their equipment got stolen - in London's east end. Bloc Party played. It was a great night.

Ok, now some things you don't know: Cazals are signed to French record label Kitsune. It is an electronic music label, home to Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco, Crystal Castles and other such forward thinkers. You may know them from their excellent Maison compilations or for releasing vinyl only singles by Klaxons, Foals and Late of The Pier. They are not normally interested in guitar bands but they made an exception for Cazals. This is significant.

There's no business like unfinished business: Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man is not a band born of design, but born of necessity. A band that know there is no 'dream' to be lived, they understand that it will be long and hard to escape the labyrinth of excess and cliche that London and its musicians has become.

Caribou
A band changing their name from a province in Canada to a large reindeer commonly found in North America could sometimes mean a change in musical style or a band member, but not for Caribou. Formerly known as Manitoba, the brainchild behind the band, Dan Snaith had to change their name in order to avoid being sued by The Dictator’s front man, Handsome Dick Manitoba. But enough about the former NY punk band! The important thing is that Caribou is back with their first album under their new moniker (third album overall) called, The Milk of Human Kindness. They return to their usual mix of 21st century psychedelia infused with hip hop beats and heavy rock sounds, but this time in a more controlled and structured manor. Touring with two drummers, minus the bear masks they once sported while supporting their second album Up in Flames, Caribou are way more than your typical hipster band with a laptop.

Senser
This could go on for ages, so here is a quick version of events... Since 1989 Senser have produced a unique fusion of rock, metal, hiphop and alternative electronica. They became known for their political lyrics and a huge live sound which gained headline slots at most of the major UK festivals. Senser achieved worldwide success with Stacked Up in 1995 and subsequently split up having toured half the planet. One half remained to release Asylum in 1998 and the other half started Lodestar and released an album of the same name. In 2001 the band met up for a festival date to promote a compilation of the first two albums and decided to reform. Schematic was released on One Little Indian in May 2004, it was a big success with fans and the band toured it throughout Europe and the UK. Drawing on their own personal styles, experiences and influences the work represented a broad musical development from their past releases. Becoming disenchanted with the marketing support provided by independent record companies, the band decided to develop their own music company, Imprint Music, headed up by their manager. Encouraged by a strong network of fans, accessible through online channels and unafraid of the changing music business environment, Senser wrote and recorded their fourth studio album working with producers Neil McLellan (who previously produced The Prodigy albums) and New York hip hop producer Scott Harding. The first single taken from the album is End Of The World Show. Mixes of the album are still being finalised and it is scheduled for an early summer 2008 release.

My American Heart

+ We Are The Ocean + Just Surrender

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £10

Age doesn't necessarily denote musical prowess, but for My American Heart, a band who wrote their debut when most of the members were merely 16, making great music has only been augmented by three years of touring, practice and acquired knowledge. The San Diego fivesome's dynamic, innovative second record reverberates with a sense of newfound wisdom and the sort of skill that comes only from that hard-earned experience, a reminder of how shockingly young the makers of the record actually are. The strikingly varied disc, metaphorically entitled Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather to denote the beauty that inherently lies in all things, soars from hooky, driving rock ("The Shake (Awful Feeling)" and "Boys! Grab Your Guns") to introspective acoustic ballad ("Tired and Uninspired") to expansive searches that reveal a whole new side of My American Heart ("Dangerous" and "Fantasy"). Soliman's lyrics are noticeably more refined, spinning with clever turns of phrase and poetically-inclined verses- yet another gleaming facet of evident growth on the record.

My American Heart entered the studio on February 4th. After whittling down a long list of possible producers, the group chose James Paul Wisner, the producer behind bands like Underoath, The Academy Is and Dashboard Confessional, who Soliman calls the "perfect fit for this record." In Wisner's St. Cloud, FL Studio, just south of Orlando, the quintet dove headfirst into an encouraging, creative environment that helped them pen the next tracks to the record. "He helped us really explore ideas and he really listened to the songs," Barrera notes of the experience. "He was huge part of the record."

My American Heart has certainly not eschewed their engaging pop sensibilities, but even former disbelievers won't be able to deny the range and strength of the songwriting on Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather or the memorability of the tracks, which the band hopes will be drawn to any listener who happens to hear them. As far as huge steps up go, this is a massive one, and the significance of that is not lost on My American Heart. "I just want people to really open their minds to this and give some consideration to how much we?ve grown since the last record," Soliman says. "We really learned that we are better than what we thought we could be."

They’re the UK’s most unlikely music heroes; they’ve written a single about an accountant called Dennis, they use kitchen utensils - including the mighty colander- as percussion, the lead singer’s dad plays guitar and they think Hard-Fi are repellent.

Emilie Autumn

Doors - 7:00 PM

Tickets - £14Adv

Courtney Love's "anarchy violinist" returns to the stage and is keeping the spotlight all to herself. Fresh off the road as Ms. Love's touring bandmate, and with appearances on Leno and Letterman, glossy magazine centerfolds, and guest slots on the albums of such artists as Love, Billy Corgan, and Die Warzau under her corset strings, Emilie Autumn's devilishly dark lyrics and industrial-strength voice reinvent "gothic" for the masses.

Chosen by Interview Magazine as one of their '14 Artists to Watch", EA's theatrical stage show is a sexy circus of gothic burlesque backed by her all-girl band. But as the sole composer performer, and producer of her dramatic new album, "OPHELIAC" gets personal. Written in the style she calls "victoriandustrial." "OPHELIAC" draws upon EA's influences as a child prodigy classical violinist and combines them with her passion for the harsh industrial of Laibach & Front 242, the sublime melodicism of Depeche Mode, and the drama of Moi Dix Mois and Visual Kei. Accentuated by EA's signature metal-style violin shredding, heartbreakingly lush strings, and menacing lyrics growled with enough intensity to make your hairs stand on end, the resulting noise is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge.

Something wicked this way comes. From the foggy majesty of Seattle, Washington comes Aiden, a young band who meld punk, post-hardcore and goth influences into a lethal stew that recalls the best of bands like AFI and H.I.M. With music that defies categorization, Aiden dubbed it horror rock, defining once and for all the dark lyrical influences and vital energy.

Man Raze

Man Raze

Before joining Def Leppard, London born Phil Collen played in Girl, who were one of the great unsung UK rock acts of the early 80’s (singer Phil Lewis would later front LA Guns – who were at the vanguard of the LA sleaze rock scene that eventually produced Guns N Roses). Whilst Phil went on to join Def Leppard he maintained a strong friendship with Simon Laffy, Girl’s bassist.  Phil returned to London in mid 2004 to care for his dying father. While there, he approached Simon with some songs he had been writing in addition to Def Leppard. The music was very different to Leppard – rawer, simpler and more direct. Simon agreed to collaborate on the material and the basis of the band was formed.  It was then by chance Phil bumped into Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook. Phil and Leppard had always been fans of the Pistols and particularly Paul Cook’s drumming – even requested that Def Leppard’s producers try and get them that “Pistols drum sound”. Man Raze was born…

Freed from the expectations of their former (or current) outfits, the band can play whatever they like. The sound is truly eclectic – a mix of the classic and contemporary influences that have shaped the individual members as musicians - from the Police and Trojan Records through to Bowie and Nirvana. The band have gone back to their collective garage roots and all recordings are self recorded and produced.

On first glance Man Raze could be seen as a side project, a flight of fancy, an unlikely collision…but first glances are deceptive. Man Raze are much more than the sum of their parts. They are a band – exciting, vibrant, new and unique…

Eschewing their illustrious past, the band have spent the past two year getting back to basics, writing and recording – they also played a sold out show at London’s Spitz club.

Dodgy

A final reminder that Dodgy’s national tour of Barfly venues kicks off this week and to celebrate we have an exclusive FREE download of a brand new song Down In The Flood to give you a taster of their new material.

Since there reunion tour in March and numerous festival appearances over the summer the band were approached by Metro Newspaper/Me Music to play a series of Club Size Venues across the UK with support from some of the best up and coming bands!   Bands were asked to compete in a battle of the bands style competition where the winner gets to be the official Dodgy Tour support for each date.  The winner of this prize is the rather fabulous ENL (myspace.com/iloveenl).   In addition to ENL joining Dodgy on tour the band have been able to choose some of their up and coming faves amongst whom are Panama Kings, Olympus Mons and The Underhills.

Since championing new acts is something the members of Dodgy have been doing since the early days of The Dodgy Club the band feel it’s a great way to celebrate their return and have been able to select some of their favourite new bands to complete the line-up.

In addition to all this Dodgy have also started to record again and will be giving away a brand new song entitled ‘Down In The Flood’  by simply registering on their NEW website www.dodgyology.com  With an album’s worth of material already in the bag we can expect an official release next year!

New Zealand’s hottest export of 2008, Kora are a five-piece band made up of four Maori brothers and their adopted musical sibling, and are currently destroying the charts in their homeland on a scale not seen since Fat Freddy’s Drop emerged.  Melding together influences from across the musical spectrum, including dub, funk, breakbeat, rock and blues, the band are renowned for their phenomenal live performances, often described as The Prodigy meets Bob Marley and the Wailers, where solid vocal harmonies ride a powerhouse rhythm section, creating a sonic boom that can be heard as far away as Fiji.
